PORTUGAL
INTRODUCTION
Portugal is located at South-West extreme of Europe and consists of the mainland and the islands: the Azores (Açores) and Madeira islands. It is 91,905 sq. km in area and has the population of almost 9.928 million people (1998). 36 per cent of the population is urban. Homogeneous Mediterranean people make up the majority population. A small African ethnic minority reminds of the Portugal’s colonial history. 97 per cent of the population belong to the Roman Catholic religion and the official language is Portuguese. The polarity between a few major cities (Lisbon and Oporto in the first place) with abundant cultural facilities on one side and rural areas which remain peripheral and fairly isolated on the other, still marks the environment for cultural policy in Portugal. Formerly strictly centralized, the cultural field in Portugal is undergoing profound changes, not merely from the administrative point of view, but also in terms of global restructuring. The approach of the state is changing and more and more effort is being put into shaping a balanced and more decentralized system. The demand for a more even distribution of cultural initiatives and funding is influencing the development of a new model of regional division of the country.
GENERAL DIRECTIONS OF CULTURAL POLICY
These initiatives have caused a great promotion of cultural resources, as well as increased professionalization of cultural life.

* Description for each of Hofstede's Dimensions listed below The World Factbook 2002 In a country that has over 50% of its population practicing the Catholic religion, we found the primary correlating Hofstede Dimension to be Uncertainty Avoidance (UAI). There were only 2 countries out of 23 that did not follow this correlation, they were Ireland and the Philippines. (See accompanying Article Based on our studies and data, the large majority of predominantly Catholic countries (those with Uncertainty Avoidance as their highest ranking Dimension) have a low tolerance for ambiguity. This creates a highly rule-oriented society that institutes laws, rules, regulations, and controls in order to reduce the amount of uncertainty within the population.

P ORTUGAL'S C ULTURE
I NTRODUCTION In the early 1960s, Celeste and Joaquim Sequeira made the difficult decision to leave Silves, Portugal to start a new life in Canada. My father, Joaquim, was 33 years old when he left his homeland due to lack of work. visited Portugal six times and spent my time on the beach, visiting family, hanging out with friends and working in the family orchards. My parents were raised in the small village of Poco Barreto , 10 km from Silves. I have an interesting memory of men travelling from village to village by motorcycle to sell fish. They yelled out what they had to sell and people made their way to purchase their dinner for the day. I last visited Portugal in 1994, when it seemed people were more dependent on themselves for food. In this digest I will touch on religion, food, beaches and the festivals people participate in.

Cultural Landscape of Sintra (1995)
Portugal
Back to index In the 19th century Sintra became the first centre of European Romantic architecture. Ferdinand II turned a ruined monastery into a castle where this new sensitivity was displayed in the use of Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish and Renaissance elements and in the creation of a park blending local and exotic species of trees. Other fine dwellings, built along the same lines in the surrounding serra , created a unique combination of parks and gardens which influenced the development of landscape architecture throughout Europe. Sintra is located about 24 km (15 mi) northwest of Lisbon, of which it is a suburb. The first known settlers were Romans, although Phoenicians may have also settled on the site. The site then fell to the Moors, who made it a royal residence. In 1147 Sintra was made part of the kingdom of Portugal. Overlooking the majestic mountain range that bears its name, and whose magnificent vegetation the British author of the romantic movement, Lord Byron, described as "Glorious Eden" in his poem "Childe Harold", Sintra with its fantastic park, its two royal palaces and its ancient Castelo dos Mouros, is one of the loveliest romantic scenes imaginable. Sintra is something unique, incomparable, and it is impossible even to reflect a pale image if its unequalled beauty.

Museu da Marinha (Maritime Museum)

This is one of the most important maritime museums in Europe. Three anchors from Columbus's Ni–a stand by the entrance. On display inside are models and actual craft from the era of the great Portuguese discoveries. Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (National Museum of Ancient Art)
This certainly is the finest museum extant of Portuguese painting. It is housed half in the Count of Alvor's 17th-century palace (Pombal lived here for a while) and half in a modern addition, where the west end provides the entrance. Torre de Belem (Tower of Belem)
The 16th-century Manueline-style tower is a virtual icon of Lisbon. When it was constructed in 1521, the tower stood farther out in the river, but after centuries of silting, the bank has sincecome out to meet it. Lagos Lagos was where Henry the Navigator had his ships built and supplied for voyages into uncharted waters during Portugal«s most illustrious period, the 15th-century Age of Discovery. Today its seafaring traditions are maintained in a modern marina. The entrance to the marina and the outer harbour is guarded by the little Forte da Porta da Bandeira opposite a restored section of the ancient town walls. The most remarkable of the towns places or worship is the Church of Santo Antonio. It is unobtrusive outside, but has a stunning interior of carved and gilded woodwork and hand-painted tile panels. A fascinating little museum, with archaeological and religious pieces, is situated next door. The popular beaches of Dona Ana and Porto do M—s are on either side of the erosion-sculpted cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade headland south of the town.
