Impressions of Portugal
~ country, sights and culture ~

our tour July 2001 Evora Mertola Estromoz Marvao Fatima Alcobaca Batalha Obidos Sintra Lisbon Albufeira the links open new windows - please close them, to return T his journey by far surpassed our expectations. Portugal is a fascinating country with a rich cultural heritage, charming old cities, picturesque landscapes, dreamlike beaches with idyllic bays and not at least the country, where 1917 happened the wonder of Fatima , which made the city a world famous place of Christian pilgrimage. W e started our tour with a one week's round-trip by car, which gave us unforgettable impressions of life, the cultural heritage and the beauty of the country. Our itinerary lead us more than 1000 km through the country, from Faro at the southern coast up to the region around Lisbon and back to the Algarve, to Albufeira, where we spent another week. E specially remarkable and impressive were the unusual large fortresses on high hilltops, the mighty ramparts of which surround mediaeval cities, still inhabited as well as marvellous castles. Thus we often felt like taken back into the times of the Moorish conquerors and the expulsion of them by the Portuguese. O n the way we enjoyed seeing the varying landscapes - steppes, mountain chains and fertile plains with exotic subtropical vegetation. While Eucalyptus-, olive- and cork oak plantations, fruit trees and wine form the lovely picture of the countryside, palms and a lavish abundance of colourful flowers gives the white villages, the nobleman's country seats, the solaced quintas and the cities a charming flair.

According to historians from portugal, the Portuguese people were the ones who started the European expansion to the new world of Africa in the fiftteenth century. From all the countries that participated in the overseas expansion Portugal was the state that had colonies for a longer period. They had colonies for five hundred years, until 1975 when nationalist groups in the colonies rebelded against the fascist regime of Salazar which was defeated by the Portuguese armed forces in 25 April of 1974.Portugal had five colonies in Africa: Portugal has been a member state of the EU for one decade only. Belem Tower, one of Lisbon's many architectural treasures If you are the type of English tourist whose idea of a great foreign holiday is sitting outside an English bar while eating English food and gulping down English beer, there is a good chance you have been to Portugal's Algarve region.
Like the Costa del Sol across in neighbouring Spain, Portugal's south coast has more than its fair share of over-developed tourist resorts where British and German holidaymakers on package-tours seem to be in competition to confirm their national stereotypes. It's a lot of fish and chips and lager, bratwursts and more lager. Something which Portugal's tourist board - Icep Portugal - is more than happy to admit is fine if you like that sort of thing. After all, the Algarve - which remains Portugal's main tourist centre - has since the 1970s been a very important foreign earner for a country that has worked hard to both develop its economy after decades of stagnation.

Read this in Japanese England vs Portugal - a long history Part 1 Phil Town reflects on a history of alliances stretching back to the 12th century, and then brings us up-to-date with a look at these two countries more recent football rivalry. England and Portugal go way back. English crusaders were keen to help oust the Moors from Lisbon in 1147, and the mutual trade treaty signed in 1294 became Portugal 's first ever alliance with another country. Since then there have been many instances of mutual help. England lent a hand in Portugal 's wars against Castile (the 1400s) and the French (the 1800s), and the Portuguese stood up and were counted (to the tune of 35,000 dead) in the Great War. Along the way there has been the occasional hiccup in relations, notably the so-called Ultimato Ingles (the 'English Ultimatum') of 1890, where Britain threatened military action if the Portuguese didn't limit their territorial claims in southern Africa . But weighing up the give and take, there has been as much giving as taking. England 's cultural history was certainly marked by the arrival on its shores of Lady Catherine of Braganza in 1661, armed with an immense dowry to wed King Charles II - a dowry that included £500,000 in gold, the town of Bombay and a chest of tea. Thus was England 's love affair with the 'cuppa' born, and just to make our breakfasts complete, she also introduced us to marmalade. Later, England swapped textiles and textile know-how for the nectar that was/is Port wine; still today there is a significant British presence in the wine industry in the Douro Valley around (O) Porto.
