ADVERTISING INFORMATION Santa Maria (Azores Islands) - Culture Festivals The crowning of the "emperor", the displaying of his insignia - crown and sceptre - in the "theatres" of the villages, the procession of the "emperor" and "empress" with their retinue, the women carrying flower-bedecked wicker baskets filled with bread, the bull-carts, with colourful paper and flower decorations on their yokes carrying offerings for the "império" or feast, the music and singing of the "jesters" - all these are phases of a ritual whose origins are lost in time. On the day of the festival, which varies from parish to parish, open fires are lit early in the morning to heat up the big-bellied pots in which the meat dishes, called soup of the Empire, are cooked. The "império" attracts all the inhabitants of the villages and surroundings, who eat and drink in a joyful atmosphere, in Whitsun and following Sundays. Other colourful festivals are that of Santo Amaro at Praia, Almagreira, on 15th January, the Festivals of Vile do Porto on 15th August and the festivals of the patron saints of the parishes during the summer months. All the religious ceremonies, lived with devotion, are completed by animated profane festivities with music and dancing.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Madeira - Culture THE EMBROIDERY INDUSTRY When we look to an embroidery is like travelling in a land of fantasy, colour, imagination and art. The art of the stitches and slipknots is where we discover many hours of work and dedication. Madeira museums keep abundant and precious artistic masterpieces of that period and Madeira people have proud of "Museu de Arte Sacra in Funchal". It has one of the most representative world collections of Flemish paintings, proceeding from Bruges, Antwerp and Malines. There are also still notable architectonic evidences, such as at Funchal Cathedral; the Church and Convent of Santa Clara; the Churches of Calheta, Santa Cruz and Machico; the Chapels of Reis Magos, Encarnacao and Corpo Santo. There are also some remains of Old Customhouse and Manueline windows kept at Quinta das Cruzes. The Cathedral However, since the last decade of the 16th century, the exportation of sugar suffered a great resection. This resection was determined by the break of soil productivity, diseases that contaminated the canebrakes and, above all, due to the competitive sugar brought from Brazil, where Madeira people had introduced techniques and specialised hand labour. Thus, during a great period of the 17th century, Madeira Archipelago suffered a social and economical crisis. However, Funchal port kept the commercial trade to Africa, America and India. It also had importance with the exportation of pastry, the famous "casquinha" done from lemon, cider and other candied fruit in a fusing of sugar.

GOLF DESTINATIONS
Portugal Golf, Part 3: Culture and Courses
By Carla Harvey, Staff Writer
Quinta da Barca Golf Club
Viana do Castelo welcomes with a devil- may-care attitude and an appealing raffish quality that seems quite appropriate to its status as the Minho’s leading seaside resort. Everyone seems to have a good time here. Given a diversity of shopping and an equal number of intriguing restaurants, it’s not difficult to understand the contentment. The nine-hole course at Quinta da Barca Golf Club is part of a resort complex and no less attractive for being so. Serving as a good example of well-controlled real estate development, its definition as a golf course is demanding of attention and a pleasure to play. Built alongside a freshwater marina on the Cávado river, it is a few kilometres from the village of Esposende. Alternate tees allow a further 9 holes for the golfer who insists a game is not a game without the full complement; an additional nine holes are under design at present. Even as it stands, Quinta da Barca is a long course; just over 4,000 metres with three par 4 holes that make it an adequate challenge to keep golfers on their toes. No fewer than three lakes lend beauty and hazard to play. The first four holes are sheltered by pine trees while the others holes are riverside, running back up to the clubhouse. Perhaps the dogleg on 8 is the most demanding on the course: it is protected by a lake and the river; overshoot and the certainty is a watery grave in the Cávado.

An independent kingdom since 1143, Portugal established its continental frontiers in 1297 and is one of the oldest nations in Europe. Portugal's history has had a lasting impact on the culture of the country - Moorish and Oriental influences in architecture and the arts are prominent to this day. Traditional folk dance and music, particularly the melancholy fado, remain vibrant.
The country's strength as a holiday destination is its diversity - mountains, vast arid plains, sub-tropical volcanic islands and lush meadows, not forgetting hundreds of miles of gleaming white beaches offering the opportunity for a rejuvenating yet restful break at any time of the year.
Above all, it is the Portuguese people themselves that make the biggest impression, particularly away from the cities where certain local customs and traditions have been preserved for centuries. Their national way of life is leisurely, and they pride themselves on their old-fashioned politeness and Latin hospitality.

    Portugal History and Culture
History Up to the Middle Ages, the history of Portugal is inseparable from that of Spain. Present-day Portugal became a part of the Roman province of Lusitania in the 2nd century BC. In the 5th century AD control of the region passed to the Visigoths, and in the 8th century it was included in the area of Moorish Muslim conquest. In 997 the territory between the Douro and Minho rivers (now northern Portugal) was retaken from the Moors by Bermudo II, king of León, and in 1064 the reconquest was completed as far south as present-day Coimbra by Ferdinand I, king of Castile and León. The reconquered districts were then organized into a feudal county, composed of Spanish fiefs.
