Audit on Population Studies Training at South African Universities
INTRODUCTION
In 1997 the Centre for Science Development (CSD) of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) conducted an audit of Population Studies/Demography at South African universities in order to identify programmes in this field and develop appropriate support mechanisms for those enrolled in such programmes. The following information emerged. However, despite the increase in the number of blacks being trained, the few qualified demographers in the country are still almost exclusively white Afrikaners. Although some universities offer Population Studies modules in Social Sciences departments, these are shaped around the institutional requirements and standards of the particular universities. Needless to say, these students do not become qualified demographers.
METHODOLOGY
The auditing was done in the following manner: Information on Population Studies/Demography training was requested from Registrars (Academic) of the 21 universities in the country. The registrars were chosen as information bases because the curricula of all university departments are at their disposal. Letters requesting relevant information were duly sent to them. The letters were then referred to the relevant departments by the registrars' offices. Issues investigated
