Population, Urban and Rural Geography
Staff Undergraduate Papers Graduate Papers Staff Publications The Department of Geography, Tourism and Environmental Planning at the University of Waikato has had a strong interest in Population and Urban Geography from its earliest days and has played a major role in developing the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as New Zealand's leading centre for teaching and research in international migration and population studies. In 1979 the University established a Population Studies Centre in the Faculty and students interested in Population and Urban Geography may strengthen their degrees in this field by taking some of the papers co-ordinated by the staff of the Population Studies Centre. The population and urban papers taught in the Department of Geography have always emphasized the interdisciplinary and applied nature of population and urban studies and have sought to balance important international and local perspectives. The Department of Geography has major strengths in international migration studies and has been very successful in securing competitive research funding in this field from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST), Asia 2000, the Health Research Council and the New Zealand Immigration Service. An international migration research group has two full-time research fellows and a number of part-time research assistants. There are opportunities for students to be employed as temporary research assistants from time to time.

Minorities comprise a growing percentage of the U.S. nonmetro and metro population. Absolute numbers for all groups increased during the 1990s, but because non-Hispanic Whites grew at the slowest rate, their proportion of the total U.S. population decreased. Hispanics and Asians are the fastest growing minority groups in the United States. Their higher growth rates result from changes in U.S. immigration laws in the mid-1960s that favored immigration from non-European countries. In addition, because many immigrants tend to be relatively young, they are more likely to marry and/or have children. The Native American population had above-average birth rates during the 1990s, but their population growth between 1990 and 2000 (as well as between 1980 and 1990) also resulted from greater numbers of them recording their heritage on the Census. Even though non-Hispanic Blacks grew at twice the rate of non-Hispanic Whites in the past decade ( table 1 ), their patterns of population growth, aging, and household size in metro and nonmetro areas resemble those of Whites rather than those of fast-growing Hispanic and Asian residents.

Meade is a full professor of geography with a nexus of interests called cultural ecology: health and disease (medical geography), population (demography and especially population pressure), agricultural ecology, food and nutrition; and hum an/environment interactions in general. She has a regional focus in Asia, especially tropical Asia. She teaches courses on medical geography, population geography, cultural ecology, the world's food supply, Third World development issues, and tropical Asi a. In 1991 she won the university's award for undergraduate teaching. Professor Meade graduated valedictorian from Hofstra College in 1966 with a B.A. in history and then went to the Peace Corps to Thailand. Teaching English in a remote, small town there she experienced epidemics, crop failures, infrastructional barriers, e ducational opportunities, and the hopes of a youthful population for a better national future. She decided she could be more useful as a geographer, and earned a master's degree at Michigan State University in 1970, specialing in medical geography. She ea rned her doctorate degree from the University of Hawaii in 1974 after two years of field work on land development and health in Malaysia. After teaching at UCLA for two years and at the University of Georgia for two years she joined Carolina in 1978.

Population Studies
Many important social, cultural, and economic trends are reflected in population patterns. Population Studies involves the examination of these associations through an interdisciplinary perspective, often making use of demographic research methods. As examples, at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Population Studies faculty undertake research on the patterns between social inequality and health and longevity, family structure and aging, and environmental conditions and migration.
Students of Population Studies at CU-Boulder are trained in demographic concepts and methods, while encouraged to integrate interdisci- plinary approaches in their analyses of social problems and social change. To address important research questions, faculty and graduate students increasingly rely on innovative and cutting-edge analytical techniques and rich cross-sectional, longitudinal, and contextual data sources. Graduate students are trained for a wide range of professional, academic, and research roles in public and private organizations concerned with population issues and problems.
Incoming graduate students may examine any topical area within Population Studies, but our faculty research interests include migration and distribution, environmental demography, and social inequalities in health. Of course, many researchers find interconnections between these research areas, as shown below.
