Workload
Lectures: 21 x 1 hr lectures.
Practicals: 7 x 2 hr practicals.
Private study: 23 hrs.
Assessment: 32 hrs.
The two open assessments involve intensive work over 4 days. Allow 4 hours per day. There is no closed assessment, and therefore no time is allocated for 'revision'.
Private Study
Reading (SICP and others): 5 hours. Post-lecture (note consolidation, reviewing examples): 8 hours. Problem solving (e.g. exercises in SICP): 10 hours.
Assessment
Open
Open: The two open assessments involve writing a program to solve a problem, and producing a short report on your solution.
Description
The module structure is based on the Teach-Consolidate-Assess cycle. Each week's lectures will normally consist of two lectures introducing new material followed by a third deepening your understanding by looking at the material in new ways. There will be supervised practicals each week, and consolidation exercises for you to do in your own time. The module covers the first half of Abelson and Sussman's book (see below). You should expect to spend a high proportion of your "private study" time reading the text, and trying the (many) problems and exercises that are presented there.
Learning Outcomes
Successfully completing this module will mean that you will have a solid understanding of the techniques, patterns, and idioms of programming which are applicable to any specific programming language. You will be able to design solutions to programming problems before writing code, enabling you to choose the most appropriate language (or implementation technique for a given language) with which to engineer your program. At the end of the module it is hoped that you will feel that programming is both useful, and exciting.

Programming: What to do about XP SP2 Pop-up Blocker
So you wrote this real cool web application that used automatic pop-up windows in interesting ways. Unfortunately, XP SP2 was installed on people's machines and your application doesn't work. What to do? First understand Pop-up Blocker: User perspective information here and here Detailed TechNet intro is here as a topic of a larger intro to XP SP2. Upshot is that if your program uses program-driven pop-ups you should rewrite your application to pop up in response to user input, which is not blocked. If you can't do that, you can set the following registry setting to allow pop-ups from your server. Here is more information on the pop-up blocker registry settings. Finally, if you are using AD to control the desktop machine, such as for a corporate intranet application, for example, you can make changes to your Active Directory Group Policy. Overview
Synchronous languages have been introduced in the 80s to program reactive systems . Such systems are characterised by their continuous reaction to their environment, at a speed determined by the latter. Synchronous languages have recently seen a tremendous interest from leading companies developing automatic control software for critical applications. For instance, Schneider Electric uses a Lustre-based tool, named Scade, to develop the control software for nuclear plants. Aerospatiale also uses this tool to develop the flight control of the new Airbus planes. Dassault Aviation uses Esterel Studio to program the flight control software of the Rafale fighter. Snecma uses Sildex, a Signal-based tool to develop airplane engines. ST Microelectronics, Texas Instrument, Motorola, Intel, are also interested in the Esterel technology for chip design. The key advantage pointed by these companies is that the synchronous approach has a rigorous mathematical semantics which allows the programmers to develop critical software faster and better. Indeed, the semantics of the languages is used as a formal model upon which all the programming environments are defined. The compilation involves the construction of these formal models, and their analysis for static properties, their optimisation, the synthesis of executable sequential implementations, the automated distribution of programs. It can also build a model of the dynamical behaviours, in the form of a transition system, upon which are based the analysis of dynamical properties, e.g., through model-checking based verification, or discrete controller synthesis. Hence, synchronous programming is at the cross-roads of many approaches in compilation, formal analysis and verification techniques, and software or hardware implementations generation. The approach is related to formal methods for reactive systems like Statecharts, StateFlow, UML StateCharts.

Keyword index
Background
This list of keywords is based on a review of the index of the book Psychology of Programming , on the work of the ACM CHI Curriculum Development Group , on several online guides to thesaurus construction, and on the visual programming language classification system devised by Margaret Burnett and Marla Baker. This list was created, and is being maintained by, Alan Blackwell
How to assign keywords to your paper
To classify a publication, please follow this procedure:
  • Choose keywords at the most specific level of the tree below. When listing keywords in a paper, give the full reference within the tree, followed by the keyword name, as follows:
    "POP-I.A. Team Structure".
If no bottom-level keyword applies to your work, please try to define a further keyword that you think will be useful in future. Give the tree reference to define where it belongs in the classification structure, as follows:
    "POP-III.B. ToonTalk"

    Contextual Pop-Up Menu Programming
GUI Techniques with LabVIEW's Event Structure
    by Dave Ritter
In the last edition of the LTR GUI Corner, we looked at the tab control and discussed a few general usage recommendations. This time, our focus will be the new event structure introduced in LabVIEW 6.1. In order to step beyond the basic introductory examples shipped with LabVIEW, this article explores a specific LabVIEW programming challenge: contextual pop-up menus. The contextual pop-up menu is a GUI staple found in almost every commercial application. In most implementations, a hierarchical structure is provided, as is the case with LabVIEW's own pop-ups (see Figure 1 ). But while contextual pop-ups are a popular convention in mainstream programming, implementing this capability in LabVIEW has traditionally been extremely involved. The investigations revealed here are based on an initial assumption that event structures could very well simplify contextual pop-up menu deployment.
    Figure 1: A Hierarchical Pop-up Menu
    Spiral Development

When you are unsure of the viability of an undertaking, the spiral development cycle is always a useful approach. If promising results are obtained in relatively short order, more ambitious implementation details can be addressed in subsequent development cycles. As I previously had not done too much experimentation with the event structure, the objectives of the first iteration were relatively modest. I would focus on the basic menu functionality and worry about fine-tuning the look and feel later.

My own private Noise Pop By Lynn Rapoport I'VE HEARD QUITE to squabble over, the inarguable "we like these bands." However, nobody seems to use "noise pop" to describe a sound anymore, and maybe nobody would know what was meant, unless the user added a qualifier like "circa '94" for that soupçon of lip-curling pretentiousness. And I never really noticed there being less noise, pop, or any other type of rock and roll in February than in January, May, or late July, but maybe my rock elders fought that battle so I wouldn't have to, and kids today don't know how lucky they are to have so much Noise Pop.

About every 20 years, says NPR's Rick Karr, "a new technology comes along and revolutionizes the sound of recorded music, or the economics of the record industry. In the past, those technologies have primarily affected recording studios and record pressing plants but the latest revolution is happening at home."
In homes, for example, like Elizabeth Sharp's Brooklyn loft apartment, where she records music in a six-by-eight-feet cubicle she calls "the Rock Closet." With cardboard and old futons soundproofing the walls, a drum kit, a stack of guitar amps, and an Apple Macintosh as a studio recorder, Sharp can record and mix song tracks for her band, Ill Ease. Just 10 years ago, says Karr, even a studio like this would have cost $50,000 or more. Today, it can be had for the cost of a home computer and less than $1,000 of additional hardware and software.
