Conservative Pop Music? The Top 40 of the Top 40 Bruce Bartlett Full Text of Speech to be given at The Philadelphia Society Regional Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, September 21, 2002. Pop music is probably one of the last places a conservative would normally look for reinforcement of his worldview. Rock and roll, which has dominated pop music since the 1950s, is inexorably associated with liberalism in the minds of many conservatives. But in fact, there have been a significant number of songs on the pop charts during the rock era that are explicitly conservative. I have compiled a list of these conservative classics. Before listing my top selections, I should explain the criteria on which I based my choices. First, I based them solely on the conservatism of the lyrics. A song had to have an explicitly conservative theme, although just a single line may represent it. I looked particularly for those embodying religious or patriotic themes, as these are unambiguously conservative values. Second, I paid no attention to the politics of the performer. There are a number of good conservatives, such as Ted Nugent and even Walter Brennan, who have had hit songs over the years.

Stivale and Andrew Murphie It seems clear to me that philosophy is truly an unvoiced song, with the same feel for movement music has. Gilles Deleuze, Negotiations. Rightly or wrongly, Deleuze has been labelled a snob for his high-brow taste in music, art and literature. For the most part, Deleuze depicts the popular as the undesirable other, or worse, an enormous homogenising machine depriving art of its place and value in contemporary society. In this respect, at least, Deleuze is very much like Adorno, utterly modernist. Yet I believe Deleuze's work, despite his personal taste, can account for the peculiar events and phenomena of popular culture if we can disentangle popular cultural texts and practices from the amorphous matrix of capitalism Deleuze identifies them with, and treat them with the same respect and affection he accords to Kafka's writing, for instance. This would amount to the discovery and articulation of a form of creativity unique to mass culture. Rather than contrast art and popular culture, and rehearse a procedure Deleuze is known to have loathed, what needs to be found is a way of avoiding such distinctions altogether, something Deleuze himself made his life's work. His way out of dialectics was abstraction, or the discovery of the artistry of any text. This is particularly necessary in the case of popular music, because to many it is nothing but a giant exercise in money-making, and thereby completely devoid of aesthetic value.

Billboard NEW YORK - One of the year's more unlikely chart acts in Poland is Pope John Paul II. On the top 50 earlier this month, no fewer than seven albums featured the late pontiff. Most prominent was veteran singer/songwriter Stanislaw Sojka's 2003 album, "Jan Pawel II Tryptyk Rzymski" (A.A.J. Brize/EMI), which climbed to No. 1. The 10-track album features musical settings of poems by Pope John Paul II. It has shipped more than 40,000 copies, according to the label. Sojka recalls playing songs from the album for the pope in the Vatican in November 2003. "The words are so powerful, I felt I had to put them to music," he says. "I'm proud I had the opportunity to perform the songs for him." The other albums are live recordings made during papal visits to Poland between 1979 and 2002.

Her instruments are her fine vocal chords. Jennifer recently did perform at Lincoln Center with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, conducted by Nelson Riddle's son, Christopher.
