Pop Art Icon Honored On United States Postage Stamp
WASHINGTON
- He elevated the Campbell's soup can into a modern work of art. Artist, filmmaker and illustrator, Andy Warhol will be featured on a new commemorative postage stamp to be issued August 9 in Pittsburgh by the United States Postal Service.
The public is invited to the first day of issue ceremony, which will be held at 5:30 PM at The Andy Warhol Museum, 117 Sandusky Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The new stamp will be available in Pittsburgh starting August 9, and at post offices across the country beginning the following day.
"The Postal Service's stamp program offers Americans a diverse sampling of history, art and entertainment marking important milestones in the development of our nation," said S. David Fineman, Vice Chairman of the presidentially appointed Postal Service Board of Governors, who will dedicate the stamp. "This exciting new Andy Warhol stamp evokes the free and creative spirit in this country. We're sure it will be very popular with our customers and stamp collectors."
This year the Postal Service continues its celebration of the fine arts by paying tribute to Andy Warhol, a leading figure in the pop art movement and one of the most influential artists of his time.

Pop Portrait Tops Art Auction
A famous portrait of actress Elizabeth Taylor topped the bidding at Sotheby's auction of collectible art on Tuesday, May 10, 2005. The portrait, titled "Liz," was produced over 40 years ago by one of the leading Pop artists of the 20th century, Andy Warhol. It sold for $12.6 million. What's referred to as the "Pop Art" movement got its start in England during the 1950s. It migrated to the United States in the 1960s and inspired a number of young artists, including Andy Warhol. The term "Pop Art" was first coined by an English art critic to describe art that made use of the objects, materials and technologies from mass culture, or "popular culture," reflecting industrial society. Advertising, photography, comic strips and other mass media sources were heavy influences in depicting people and things in everyday life. But Pop Art did not just become a new way to make art. It illustrated new ways of looking at the modern world.

trictly speaking, a "soft drink" is any nonalcoholic beverage. To many, soft drinks mean carbonated beverages, whether orange, cola, lemon-lime or root beer. But where does the category really begin and end? And what about all those other category headings? Can an energy drink still be a soft drink? Or is it an alternative drink? How about iced teas or New Age beverages? The original sodas were mixtures of carbonated water and fruit extracts or syrups. Each pharmacist had his own recipe, which probably precipitated the industry's rapid and expansive growth. The current U.S. bottling system grew out of a system in which a soda inventor provided his extracts to bottlers in franchise agreements. These days, two major systems exist: company-owned and independent bottlers. No matter which system is used, flavors are usually sold as concentrates by the brand-owning company to the franchise bottler. The bottler mixes the water and sugar with the concentrates and other unit packs, which may contain the acid or other secret ingredients that make up the beverage. Today, a typical soft drink formulation includes water, sugar or other sweetener, acid, color, preservative and flavor, either in the form of an extract or as an emulsion. Juice may be added, usually in the 5% to 10% range. Caffeine also might be present, either naturally or by addition.

About POP ART
pop art, a movement that first emerged in Great Britain at the end of the 1950s as a reaction against the seriousness of abstract expressionism. British and American pop artists employed a common imagery found in comic strips, soup cans, and Coke bottles to express formal abstract relationships. By this means they provided a meeting ground where artist and layman could come to terms with art. Incorporating techniques of sign painting and commercial art into their work, as well as commercial literary imagery, pop artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol attempted to fuse elements of popular and high culture to erase the boundaries between the two.
