Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 3 items Pop Art , visual arts movement of the 1950s and 1960s, principally in the United States and Britain. The images of pop art (shortened from “popular art”) were taken from mass culture. Some artists duplicated beer bottles, soup cans, comic strips, road signs, and similar objects in paintings, collages, and sculptures. Others incorporated the objects themselves into their paintings or sculptures, sometimes in startlingly modified form. Materials of modern technology, such as plastic, urethane foam, and acrylic paint, often figured prominently. One of the most important artistic movements of the 20th century, pop art not only influenced the work of subsequent artists but also had an impact on commercial, graphic, and fashion design. The historical antecedents of pop art include the works of Dadaists ( see Dada ) such as the French artist Marcel Duchamp , as well as a tradition, in U.S. painting of the 19th and early 20th centuries, of

Artist: Curt Eichelberger
Curt Eichelberger was born in Kansas and grew up in Dallas, Texas. He was fascinated at an early age with skateboard graphics, which became a major influence on his style of art. Later in school he studied other artists such as Keith Harring, Andy Warhol, and Salvador Dali. Since then, his influences in Contemporary Art have also included Robert Williams, Frank Kozik, Shepard Fairey, and Barry McGee. His artwork is an unconventional style of Pop Art, he tokened himself as "Modern Pop Art," and started the website ModernPopArt.com
He mixes conventional Pop Art with new mediums such as spray paint, vinyl, and acrylic on Plexiglas, plastic, and wood. Additionally, he has designed clothing for skateboarders, graffiti artists, and urban hip-hop youth for major metropolitan areas. In 1995, Eichelberger and a friend started Pistol clothing. They held hip-hop shows and other events to promote their line of clothing and their graffiti-style artwork.
Sadly, his partner died shortly after their endeavors. A year later, Eichelberger chose to sell the Pistol clothing label and focus on his paintings. Over the past two years, Curt Eichelberger has held at least two art exhibits a month and has sold over two hundred paintings. His art has appeared in several reputable magazines:

There must be another meaning for the word that I don’t know of. Anyway, I really like this artwork, Wish I could afford it. it didn’t sell by the way but the artist put it up again if your interested.
I doubt it will sell though. He’s going after the wrong market audience. Think about it, the only people that would appreciate or “get” this art are the kind of people who would rather spend there hard earned money on some new software than some contemporary art! He needs a geek with a passion for Microsoft, Pop Art, and some spare money to stumble upon it. good luck to him.

Joslyn Art Museum Omaha, NE The Great American Pop Art Store: Multiples of the Sixties N ot since the early 1970s have so many rarely displayed American Pop Art objects - more than 100 works - been assembled in one exhibition devoted to a movement that so strongly influenced beliefs about the nature of art. Featuring the work of seventeen of the world's most significant Pop Artists of the 1960s, The Great American Pop Art Store: Multiples of the Sixties win be on view at Joslyn Art Museum from October 23 through January 2, 2000 Artists featured in the exhibition include Allan D'Arcangelo, Jim Dine Robert Indiana Jasper Johns Roy Lichtenstein ... Edward Ruscha, Lucas Samaras, George Segal, Wayne Thiebaud , Ernest Trova, Andy Warhol , Robert Watts and Tom Wesselmann A one-of-a-kind exhibition, The Great American Pop Art Store features wonderful, wacky, Pop Art "multiples" created in the Sixties (predominantly from 1965-1969) with the hope of making new art accessible to a broader public. While the "multiple" was perceived as an art form that would "sell," and consequently find its way into the homes of many instead of just a few select galleries, it was also looked upon by many artists as an art form that allowed for experimentation with industrial art-making techniques (industrial technologies such as vacuum-forming, welding, and chrome-plating were widely available in Post-War America). Some artists found the "multiple" to be especially conducive to cultural or political commentary as well.

POP ART
Pop art's subject matter was the slick, formulaic images of mass culture and its medium the stylized graphics of commercial art. Although originating in England, the movement flourished in America during the mid-1950s and 1960s. Glorifying everyday objects and visual clichés, it served as witty commentary on the materialism and banality of mid-twentieth-century America. Among its famous examples are Jasper Johns's American flags, the packaged sexuality of Tom Wesselman's Great American Nude series, Andy Warhol's canonization of the Campbell's soup can, and Roy Lichtenstein's blowups of comic strip details. Other artists associated with the movement included Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Robert Indiana, and Jim Dine. Pop art was a reaction against the introspective and rarefied sensibility of abstract expressionism. Surface appearance replaced inner vision, humor substituted for high seriousness, and the impersonality of silk screen and the benday dot subsumed painterly expression. Like dada, its European forerunner, it challenged the concept of art by elevating the vulgar and ordinary to the status of art object. Yet pop art shared none of dada's vitriol; typically presenting the appearance of impervious neutrality toward its subject matter, it rarely betrayed outright satire. Detractors lamented that pop art merely imitated rather than transcended its content; supporters countered that by serving up the commonplace as icons, it invited examination of the numbing pervasiveness of secondhand experience.

It was a unique marriage of spirit and sense that delighted the public. Artists of the period, such as Andy Warhol, had their icons for which they became famous. Pop Art
(Beginning in 1956 in England, early 1960's USA)
Pop Art has started in England in late 50's and grown in United States in early 60's. Among the Pop Art forerunners are two unique models - prototypes of the modern artists: the French artist Marcel Duchamp and the German Kurt Schwitters. Duchamp's work and his thoughts have altered the definition of the art and our way of understanding it. He was famous with his "ready-mades," objects torn from their usual contexts and exhibited as art. Kurt Schwitters produced collages and assemblages that lay somewhere between painting and sculpture. The work of his art turned into an environment that was no longer something only to be looked at.

Pop Art
Pop Art is a movement that began in Germany in the 1950s, but had its most famous practitionersat least in this countryin Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Both used ads and comics for inspiration; the latter is most famous for his work mimicking comic books beginning in 1961. Of course, Bizet borrowed folk tunes in composing Carmen . Greek statues exist mainly because of Roman copies. Renaissance means “rebirth;” fifteenth century art and architecture copied from the past Not all artists appreciated the fact that Lichtenstein copied their work, despite the fact that comic book artists had been doing it for years, the least talented ones lifting the work of better-paid strip artists like Milton Caniff, Alex Raymond and Hal Foster. (In the comic book world, copying another’s art was called either a “swipe” or an “homage,” depending on intent.) Comic book artists may have resented the fact that while they got $50 a page for their work, Lichtenstein was commanding gallery prices of $50,000 for hisand had the wherewithal to hire as many as five assistants at one time! Lichtenstein mostly abandoned comic books as a source for inspiration after 1964, but returned to comic motifs toward the end of his career in the 1990s. (I suspect this reflected the prices that "comic book" paintings commanded relative to other paintings he did during the interim.) Warhol and Lichtenstein both saw the day when artists stole their styles back. Lichtenstein’s broad lines and “Ben Day” dots can be seen frequently in ads and on magazine covers today. In this case, art continues to imitate art. If Lichtenstein were still alive today, he couldn't get too mad about my swiping his style for many of my paintings. Roy, consider it an homage.

Email: Description About the Editor "Steven Henry Madoff's selection of writings about Pop art, which includes both well-known and unexpected pieces, is an excellent resource. Some of the voices gathered here address the theoretical underpinnings of the art. Others convey the intentions of the artists and the flavor of the timeits snap, crackle, and pop. Together, they capture the tenor of a period that continues to influence our own."Mark Stevens, art critic, New York Magazine "To understand where we are in American art, we need 'Pop Art: A Critical History' to remind us of where we were. Thorough and as lively as the era it documents, Steven Henry Madoff's indispensable compendium neatly recaptures a moment that irrevocably altered American culture."Michael Kimmelman, Chief Art Critic, New York Times "Should be read by anyone interested in understanding the ways in which we have had to change our entire idea of what art is and what artists can do. Steven Henry Madoff has given us a clearly argued critical history of a complex moment in 20th-century American art. It is an important book."David A. Ross, Director, Whitney Museum of American Art
