Chapter Nine:
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PONY EXPRESS NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL AND RECOMMENDATIONS INTRODUCTION
The Pony Express was officially discontinued on October 26, 1861, with the completion of the overland telegraph line. During the eighteen months of operation, it made 308 rides each way, covering a distance of 616,000 miles, and carrying approximately 35,000 pieces of mail, with a good percentage of the mail (67 percent) going east from San Francisco and Sacramento; [
ANNIVERSARIES After its demise, people did not forget about the Pony Express, but its heroic history was resurrected from the annals of history as a significant page in transportation and communication history. Though William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody demonstrated the Pony Express in his Wild West shows in the 1880s, recognition of the significance of the Pony Express came at the turn of the century after the publication of Frederick Jackson Turner's famous essay "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" in 1893. Thereafter, fearing the consequences of the frontier closing on our American character, we as a nation, drew strength from our frontier heritage and rise of the American West. In this quest for a usable past, the Pony Express became a usable American Western icon, symbolizing America's strength, work ethic, entrepreneurship, and individual heroism. American companies soon capitalized on the Pony Express to make correlations between it and their products. For example, one nationwide credit card company offered its customers the opportunity to purchase a collection of United States historic coins, one coin displaying a Pony Express rider. [

The Pony Express
The Pony Express was a unique attempt to deliver mail to the American West. Although it only operated for 18 months (April 3, 1860 to November 18, 1861) and bit the dust, the express became a colorful fixture of Western history. Seeking publicity and federal aid for an overland mail service, William H. Russell persuaded William B. Waddell and Alexander Majors to back his Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company, better known as the Pony Express. The firm would carry mail and some small freight for the fledgling Wells Fargo Company between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California.* Senator William M. Gwin of California was the congressional backer of the Pony Express. Russell handled promotion, Waddell was in charge of finances, and Majors was director of personnel. To draw public attention to the central route in hope of winning the $1 million government mail contract for their business, the partners intended to:
  • Prove that the central route followed by the Pony Express would be quicker than the longer southern route used by the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoaches.

    What others say:
"Deconstructing folklore and unearthing new facts, Christopher Corbett has written a first-rate narrative history about the famed Pony Express riders. Orphans Preferred is one of those rare books that sets the record straight. And it's a marvelous read to boot."
Douglas Brinkley, author of Wheels for the World: Henry Ford, His Company, and a Century of Progress "If MBAs existed in 1860, they'd have advised Russell, Majors & Waddell that their business plan for a cross-continental courier service was a loser. But the firm's folly was the Old West's gain, creating one of its most myth encrusted miragesthe fabled Pony Express. In his rollicking account of the Express, Corbett wryly picks his way through the embellishments that surround its short year-and-a-half existence . . . He ambles through the afterlife of the Pony Express as entertainment, accumulating a gallery of newspaper hacks, cheap novelists, showman Buffalo Bill, filmmakers, and local history antiquarians who peddled truths and fabrications about it. . . Buffs of the West will virtually gallop to the checkout line."
Booklist "It is the mythmaking as much as the Pony Express itself that is Christopher Corbett's subject in his entertaining and informative Orphans Preferred. The book is not so much a history as it is an effort to peel away the layers of fabrication that obscure the real Pony Express and to distinguish the liars and fabulists from the mere embroiderers."

    Surround yourself in Birds
Whether you have a few hours or a few days, birding in the Lahontan Valley surrounding Fallon offers a rewarding experience all year long.
    Day one
Bird the northern Lahontan Valley areas including Soda Lake, S-Line Reservoir, and Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. Visit the Stillwater NWR headquarters at 1000 Auction Way or the Field Office at 380 Triple E Lane for information on water conditions, birding hot spots, etc. before venturing out to the refuge. Stillwater attracts a large number of swans, geese and ducks, and its share of rare birds such as Brown Pelican and Silt Sandpiper. In addition to the birding that can be done there, Soda Lake is also a historical sight where soda was mined at the turn of the 20th Century and has, at the bottom of the lake, a "city" of mining equipment and structures used in the production of soda.
    Day two
Bird the southern Lahontan Valley areas including Diversion Dam, NAS Fallon Nature Trail, Harmon Reservoir, and the Carson Lake Wetlands. Carson Lake wetlands provide some of the best birding in northern Nevada with shorebird migration at its peak in April and again in August. Winter brings large numbers of raptors including Rough-legged hawk and the Bald Eagle. Diversion Dam is excellent for songbirds. NAS Fallon nature trail is also excellent for songbirds and one can occasionally see the metal kind, an F/A 18 Hornet training in the distance.

Moving with the seasons, the Utes covered vast areas of Colorado and surrounding states. Summer would find the tribes in the high country of the Rockies. In the fall, attention turned to gathering food and supplies and preparing for the harsh season ahead. Winters were spent in the semi-arid country of northern New Mexico and Utah, trading with neighbors. Springtime would find the various groups heading back to the high country of the Rockies. The traditional Ute food gathering and hunting lifestyle brought the Utes into the inevitable, tragic, and absolute conflict with incoming settlers, soldiers, and miners, who wanted to divide up the Ute homeland into privately owned parcels. The heart of Ute history lies in the oral tradition and is slowly fading away.

1860 to 1861- The Pony Express Benicia was not on the regular Pony Express Route, but when the riders' missed their steamer connection to San Francisco from Sacramento, they took the alternative route through Solano County. This happened a total of 19 times in the 19 month history of the Pony Express. Benicia was a busy steamer port of call and ferry station which made it an ideal place for the riders to take the ferry to Martinez and then on to Oakland and then the ferry to San Francisco. There was a total of 190 stations and up to 300 station keepers and stock tenders. There were three kinds of stations; Home stations where riders were exchanged and accommodations for them to rest, Swing stations to change horses, and Way stations which were mail drops. 300 of the finest, fastest horses were selected since they would have to travel 10 miles in an hour, however some stations were as far apart as 25 or 30 miles. In the life of the Pony Express, over 200 riders participated, including Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill. One of the first riders was William F. Fisher who led a most interesting life after the Pony Express. Read all about the

    IN WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEVADA
Prepared by Glenn Terry and Mike Bunker,
    April 1998 © Glenn Terry 1998
Somewhere in White Pine County, a long time ago and not too far away, a frontier traveler could have experienced the following event. A solitary rider on horseback appears on the horizon and rapidly approaches. He draws near and makes a brief sign of recognition with a tip of the hat, then quickly recedes from view on the distant horizon . . .
. . .Let's go back further in White Pine history to the time before the beginning of the Pony Express. From 1851 to early 1858 overland mail service west of Great Salt Lake City followed the Humboldt River route to northern California, or the Mormon Trail route to southern California. In 1855 Major Howard Egan, a Mormon pioneer and great explorer of the west, laid out a trail through the central portion of the far western states and territories, including White Pine County. This later became known as the Egan Trail, and eventually formed much of the Pony Express Trail. In White Pine County this trail went to the western edge of the Ruby Mountains , then veered northwest to intercept the Humboldt River near Gravelly Ford.
