This list of books was originally researched, in part, by Larry Carpenter, Corresponding Secretary, National Pony Express Association. My thanks to Larry for his worthwhile efforts. While all of the books listed may not be in print, many may be available from your local library or used book store. A very good on-line source for books that still are in print is . You may order many of the books that are in print by clicking on this symbol next to title of the book listed below. The best source for used books on the web is Book Site.. Jackie Lewin, Curator of History for the St. Joseph Museum , has provided the following analysis for researchers. Thanks for her contribution. The most complete books on the Pony Express are by and Roy Bloss . However, neither are annotated which is frustrating for a researcher. Settle does have a good bibliography. From Settle's papers he did have footnotes prepared, but the editors chose not to use them. They wanted to make the book more popular with the general reader. Settle was not pleased with that. Settle wrote in the mid-1950s and was the first to use the Waddell Collection at the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Bloss wrote for the Pony Express Centennial. NOTE : Settle also wrote The Story of the Pony Express which was published in England. This the same book as

On October 24 , 1861, the first transcontinental telegraph system was completed, making it possible to transmit messages rapidly (by mid-19th-century standards) from coast to coast. This technological advance, pioneered by inventor Samuel F.B. Morse , brought an end to the Pony Express, the horseback mail service which had previously provided the fastest communication between the East and the West. Established in April 1860 as a subsidiary of a famous freight company, the Pony Express operated between St. Joseph, Missouri Kansas , Nebraska, the northeast corner of Colorado , Wyoming, Utah , Nevada, and California President Lincoln's Inaugural Address, the Express logged its fastest time ever at seven days and seventeen hours.

Rapid Transit
"The Pony Express was the first rapid transit" This isn't really my area but I don't see what the Pony Express has to do with rapid transit. Cjrother 17:43, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • I've removed that (since no one seemed to mind). Cjrother 19:34, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)

How can you not see how it is related to rapid transit? That is what the pony express was about, being rapid transit of messages/packages!! Mathmo
  • I'm not sure if you are joking or not, but to me, and the nice people at wikipedia, rapid transit relates to the transportation of people. Cjrother 01:02, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ah, I see. Must be another one of these american usages of words, guess if I'd remembered more carefully my americanisms I'd have realised they had a rather narrow definition of this phrase. Sorry, from the american slant it now makes more sense to remove that phrase for the sake of other americans.

I have attempted to remove the more biased statements in this article. I also added two sentences on how the PE has entered American myth, though its skewed treatment in American history classes should be elaborated on. -

About the Pony Express 1) History: The Pony Express was founded by William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors. Plans for the Pony Express were spurred by the threat of the Civil War and the need for faster communication with the West. The Pony Express consisted of relays of men riding horses carrying saddlebags of mail across a 2000-mile trail. The service opened officially on April 3, 1860, when riders left simultaneously from St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. The first westbound trip was made in 9 days and 23 hours and the eastbound journey in 11 days and 12 hours. The pony riders covered 250 miles in a 24-hour day. Eventually, the Pony Express had more than 100 stations, 80 riders, and between 400 and 500 horses. The express route was extremely hazardous, but only one mail delivery was ever lost. The service lasted only 19 months until October 24, 1861, when the completion of the Pacific Telegraph line ended the need for its existence. Although California relied upon news from the Pony Express during the early days of the Civil War, the horse line was never a financial success, leading its founders to bankruptcy. However, the romantic drama surrounding the Pony Express has made it a part of the legend of the American West. Map of Route Station descriptions Riders Quick Facts ... A little more than a hundred years ago, a courageous band of young men enlisted in an incredible enterprise to carry mail by pony relays through 2,000 miles of savage wilderness in frontier America between St. Joseph, Mo., and Sacramento, Calif.
They took an oath on the Bible of honesty and devotion to duty and went on, despite the daily threat of death, to carry the mail 616,000 milesequal to 24 times around the earthduring the 18 months the enterprise oper-ated. In doing so, they wrote the unforgettable chapter of "The Pony Express" into American History.
The Pony Express was a horse relay mail carrying system operating in both directions between Missouri and California. The service carried the mail in 10 days from St. Joseph to Sacramento, and cut in half the time required to send mail by coach. It continued for 18 months, from April 1860 until October 1861, when the cross-country telegraph was completed.
In all, 308 runs were made each way, delivering 34,753 pieces of mail. Postage was $5 per half ounce at first, but was later reduced to $1 a half ounce. Each run carried up to 20 pounds of mail. Most accounts indicate about 90 Pony Express riders, 119 relay stations and 500 horses were used at one time or another during the 18 months.

http://www.hashknifeponyexpress.com/about-history.html
Neither rain, sleet, nor dark of night can stop the Hashknife Pony Express. Each January for the last 45 years, the old west is brought to life as an elite group of riders thunder through Arizona. This exciting event is the oldest officially sanctioned Pony Express in the world. Each rider is sworn in as an honorary mail messenger braving weather, terrain, and modern-day obstacles to deliver the United States mail. Beginning in historic Holbrook, the horseback mail route covers over 200 miles from the majestic Mogollon Rim through the wilderness of the Mazatzal range to the desert city of Scottsdale where it kicks off the Scottsdale Jaycees' Parada del Sol celebration. The Hashknife was a tool originally used by chuck wagon cooks to cut meat for hash, often fed to cowboys on the range. The Hashknife brand originated in Texas as the identification of the Aztec land and Cattle Company, which moved to Holbrook, AZ in 1866. Later, in 1957, the Navajo County Sheriff's Posse retained limited use of the brand. The Hashknife brand now identifies the Pony Express. Riders are members of the Navajo County Sheriff's Posse or their invited guests. The Hashknife outfit has the longest contract with the U.S. Postal Service and annually delivers around 2,000 pieces of first class mail bearing the valued "Via Pony Express" cachet which is hand-stamped by the riders before the start of the ride. The "Official Pony Express Envelope" will be available on December 1, 2003. The public can purchase them for $1 each at the Holbrook, Overgaard, Pine, Heber, Payson, Fountain Hills and Scottsdale Post Offices.

Pony Express Historic Resource Study
Introduction:
MYTH AND REALITY OF THE PONY EXPRESS INTRODUCTION
Perhaps no event in Western American history has captured the imagination and held the interest of people as the story of the Pony Express. Since this episode of transportation history blazed across our frontier past (in service only eighteen months), many participants, eyewitnesses, as well as Western writers, authors, and scholars have written about it with great admiration in popular books, and scholarly monographs and journal articles. Even motion pictures [ ] and television have adopted the heroic saga as their own, depicting the young men on horseback withstanding weather, enduring fatigue, and facing danger from attack by Indians, in order to carry the nation's mail as rapidly as possible across the nineteen hundred miles between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Today, this saga is deeply ingrained in our American heritage, and has become a symbol of our western past. A majority of the works on the Pony Express have popularized its lore over the realities and hardships of the operation. From the start, literary writers depicted Express riders in gallant, adventurous terms. For instance, in August of 1860, one newspaper writer described the "journey of the Pony" this way: Using a good thesaurus, a little imagination, and a flair for the written word, many authors simply rewrote, reorganized, and re-romanticized manuscripts about the Pony Express, such as the above quotation. Over the years, they have added little insight into the history of the Pony Express. Other sources tell the story of the Pony Express fairly accurately, however they provide little or no documentation to support their statements.
