I can balance my checkbook. I can stand on one foot for a long time. I can suspend my son's soccer ball on one finger like a hoodoo rock. But I cannot, for the life of me, balance my pond's water. Test taking phobia overcomes me-I know before I dip that test tube that I will flunk, again. I have improved over time but it's an ongoing challenge. The plain truth of the matter is that ponds require regular maintenance. Emphasize "regular". Mother Nature may take care of her own lakes and streams, but a human-built water garden requires frequent human intervention. This means that you, the gardener, must keep the water clean and free of bad chemicals, the plants pruned and in bounds, the fish fed (but not overfed) and the water level consistent. Let's take these tasks in order. First-the water quality. Pond water will not be crystal clear and that's OK. Some algae is normal and good for your fish. You can't really improve your water quality by adding fresh city tap water. Work with the water in your pond and avoid doing complete water changes if you can. The chlorines and chloramines of our potable water system can harm your fish if their levels get too high. Likewise, the chemicals leaching from new concrete and lawn products like weed and feed can wreak havoc with your plants and fish. Get a test kit and use it to make sure that your water has proper pH, does not show high levels of ammonia (decay byproduct) or chlorine.

Our Ponds
Structural Elements
Both Robert and I wanted a large pond, but we didn't want a pond that a child or a dog could walk up to and, perhaps, fall in, and we didn't want to have to dig a 3 foot hole in what we euphemistically call dirt (when it has rained, the dirt is like modelling clay and when it is dry, the dirt is like concrete). So we went down to the local feed store and picked up an oval livestock tank that was 3 feet high, 6 feet long, and 5 feet wide. Unlike a fiberglass pond, a livestock tank can be thrown on top of your truck, bounced out, rolled across the yard, and thrown on the ground. We were lucky. We didn't even have to level the ground. While a livestock tank may be little more difficult to handle than pond liners, you don't have to worry about ripping a livestock tank. It is tough, which more than makes up for being able to put a pond liner in the trunk. In the upper lefthand image, you can see the liner on the right. Since the water hyacinth has grown, you can no longer see the edge of the pond. The liners are black or brown plastic. We piled moss rock around ours and topped the moss rock with white flagstones I think it is very attractive, but it isn't necessarily cheaper. We didn't have to excavate, but we did have to buy stone. The tanks themselves are not pretty, so at the least you are going to have to plant something to hide it.

    Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden
The Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden is one of the oldest and most visited Japanese-inspired gardens outside Japan. It presents a condensed idealization of nature: trees and shrubs, carefully dwarfed and shaped by cloud-pruning, are surrounded by hills, a pond, and forest-sized trees. Unlike the formal, highly manicured gardens of Europe, Japanese gardens are designed to mirror nature, particularly Japan's rocky coastline and mountainous landscape, using trees, plants, and structures on a scale that creates an impression of greater space. Simplicity and "harmonious asymmetry" are important principles in Japanese gardens, as are a balance between man-made and natural, and change and constancy. Many of the structural elements and plants used in a Japanese garden have symbolic meanings; these are described in the self-guided tour BBG's Japanese garden is a blend of the ancient hill-and-pond style and the more recent stroll-garden style, in which various landscape features are gradually revealed along winding paths. The garden features hills, a waterfall, a pond, and an island, all artificially constructed. Carefully placed rocks also play leading roles. Among the major architectural elements of the garden are wooden bridges, stone lanterns, a viewing pavilion, the torii or gateway, and a Shinto shrine.

Building a Pond Garden
Reap the pleasures of water by adding a pond to your garden Cathy White For me, getting away from it all is simply a matter of stepping out the back door and spending a little time by our water garden. Listening to the soft sounds of rippling water and watching the graceful moves of the fish as they weave in and around the plants is my favorite way to unwind after a busy day. Besides providing a retreat, our pond attracts all kinds of birds, insects, toads and frogs. Our vegetable garden benefits from the feeding habits of these pest-eating creatures, and I have the pleasure of watching them. Every gardener can have a backyard oasis. A water garden needn't be large. The size of your property and your budget will determine the scope of the project. Late spring is an ideal time to build a garden pond because the soil is still moist, so is easy to dig. And, as outside temperatures get warmer and more consistent, you can introduce fish and plants to their new home. Here are step-by-step instructions of how my family installed our pond:
  • Stake the size and shape of your pond on the ground with a garden hose. Make the pond 18 to 24 inches deep for fish and deep water plants, with a 6- to 12-inch-deep zone to hold submerged pots. Dig a 6 inch trench around the inside edge of your outline and remove stakes. Dig toward the center, removing the top 6 inches of soil and sod. Use a spade to outline the deep water zone, then dig downward and outward from the center of this zone until it's the proper size and depth.

The Pond I fell in love with the pond and its giant flaxes the very first time I saw it. I remember watching early on my first morning as mist rose from the pond and three rabbits took a dawn drink. I never saw the rabbits again. Thankfully the presence of people and, more importantly, five cats discouraged them. I knew that the pond was functional and that we paid for the rights to gravity feed it from the water race. But I could dig around it and create a pond garden. I poured through books on water planting and got very keen. Then I think common sense and Kiwi pride kicked in. Did I really want that British pond look? I started thinking flaxes and Toe Toe, cordylines and hebes, and the Pond Border was born. I shifted a gunnera from the water race (it must have self planted itself there somehow). It started its life pondside as a cute little plant, about one foot high, with neat crinkly little leaves. Four years later it is HUGE with leaves as big as armchairs... the dramatic rise of Gunnera! In the summer of 1997 I bought my first cricket radio, chose a favourite shovel, and started cleaning up the mess in the Pond Paddock. The paddock grass was lumpy and uneven, with large dirt tracks. Some parts of the ground were bare and there were large piles of soil, mud and stones.

Pond-Side Garden Bench There are three Moosey garden benches - I'm still trying out positions for two of them. One sits and sulks all summer in the shade by the pond. So far it has stayed in this potentially prime location. The area under the pond trees is very noisy when the hot summer winds blow. And it's usually messy with gum tree rubbish - strips of peeling bark, leaves and branches. Then later in Autumn the pond-side tree drops leaves and brown catkins all over the seat. It usually needs clearing and cleaning before the gardener can attempt to sit down!
    Late Winter Sun
But recently this winter I've been clearing and tidying in here, and the pond garden bench has become suddenly very popular. There is late afternoon winter sun to warm up a tired gardener. All three cats and the dog are happy to visit this spot - possibly because it's in sight of the house, and FOOD...
Stephen and Taj-Dog When the garden bench was brand new it was a shiny painted brown colour. It didn't take long for that rustic look to be acquired.
    Woodland Ambience
As well as the gum trees the pond seat is surrounded by all sorts of other plants and shrubs. There is a lot of self sown purple and white
