Pond Gardening
Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-714

A soothing water garden adds sound and movement to a landscape. "A garden is where the elements in nature collide, creating a wondrous peacefulness that we gardeners revel in," says master gardener Paul James. "So how do you turn the sounds of silence into a symphony? Just add water." Chris Moore, owner of Moore Haven Water Gardens, is clear about why she's been water gardening for more than 25 years: "Water gardening is the easiest way to garden. Think of it this wayyou don't have to weed." Simplicity is just one of the things she adores about water gardening. "It also brings tranquility to the garden," she says. But before starting your own soothing spring, there are a few details to consider. Determine the size and shape of your pond to help you select the appropriate plants. Also think about how much light is available. Lots of sunshine can help keep the plants growing, the fish eating, and the algae in check. Plant life does well in a foot or two of water, but if you want fish, you need much more depth to prevent birds from plucking the fish from your pond.

Pond Gardening
Reap the pleasures of water by adding a pond to your garden
by Cathy White For me, getting away from it all is simply a matter of stepping out the back door and spending a little time by our water garden. Listening to the soft sounds of rippling water and watching the graceful moves of the fish as they weave in and around the plants is my favorite way to unwind after a busy day. Besides providing a retreat, our pond attracts all kinds of birds, insects, toads and frogs. Our vegetable garden benefits from the feeding habits of these pest-eating creatures, and I have the pleasure of watching them. Every gardener can have a backyard oasis. A water garden needn't be large. The size of your property and your budget will determine the scope of the project. Late spring is an ideal time to build a garden pond because the soil is still moist, so is easy to dig. And, as outside temperatures get warmer and more consistent, you can introduce fish and plants to their new home. Here are step-by-step instructions of how my family installed our pond: 1. Stake the size and shape of your pond on the ground with a

or are they just weeds?
Wild flower gardens are increasing in popularity as gardeners in general are more in tune with nature. Charlie Dimmock and Alan Titchmarsh with television programmes such as Charlie's Wildlife Gardens, Ground Force, Gardeners' World and Charlie's Garden Army actively encourage gardeners to attract wildlife to their gardens and to grow wild flowers. As the countryside changes and diminishes many of us like to create a miniature countryside in our own gardens. Wild flowers that have just 'appeared' in my garden that I consider worthy of a place include honeysuckle, foxglove, red campion, lesser celandine, herb robert and forget me not. I have bought others, including primrose and lady's smock. Lady's smock can attract caterpillars of green veined white and orange tip butterflies. herb robert forget me not

Pond or Water Gardens
When people think of Pond or Water Gardens, they usually think of Goldfish and Koi that are commonly stocked in the ponds. But, as gardeners, we know better. As gardeners, we know that people really create a Pond Garden for the gardening aspect of it. Water gardens open up a vast new arena for home gardeners. The selection of plants is varied and unique. The current popularity of fish ponds brings with it an increased interest for exotic plants. These plants provide four functions:
  • They help to aerate the water for the fish.
  • They often are a source of food for the fish.
  • They decorate the pond, creating a more natural setting.
  • They afford the gardener a new avenue for their hobby. Fish and garden supply stores provide a wide array of plants suitable for pond gardens. The most common are Koi and Goldfish. But, there is a wide variety of plants and landscaping to help you make your pond garden the envy of all your friends and neighbors.
