Marco Polo's Guide to Afghanistan Two Americans retrace the steps of the 13th-century Italian merchant through a harsh land of tough, hospitable people "Of the countries we traveled through," says photographer Denis Belliveau, "Afghanistan most resembled the account by Marco Polo," the 13th-century Venetian merchant whose journal still fascinates readers today. During the window of time in the 1990s after Soviet troops left Afghanistan and before the Taliban took control, Belliveau and fellow explorer Francis O’Donnell followed Polo’s route through Afghanistan and 20 other countries, traveling 33,000 miles over two years in jeeps, trains and rickshas, and on horse and camel. They are almost certainly the first to approximate Polo’s steps through Eurasia entirely by land and sea, without resorting to helicopters or airplanes. Easy targets in a region long bedeviled by war and violence, Belliveau and O’Donnell donned traditional shalwar-kameez (long shirts and baggy pants)

MARCO POLO By Jeff Jussila
Marco Polo Marco Polo was born in 1254. His father’s name was Niccolo and his uncle’s name was Maffeo. Marco Polo lived in Venice, Italy. In 1271 his adventure to China began at age 17. Marco was the first boy from Venice ever to see China. When he came home to Venice after his travels he became a merchant like his father and uncle. In China he met a Mongol ruler named the Kublai Khan.
Mongol ruler
The Mongol ruler was rich and powerful. Marco told stories to the Khan about his journeys that he had been on and the Khan liked listening to them. The Khan was so impressed that he hired him. Marco went on many missions for the Khan. Marco had a golden passport to travel freely across the Mongol ruler’s land. Information Marco learned
While Marco was working for the Khan he learned the Mongol’s language. One Chinese invention he brought home was macaroni. Marco described how the Mongol ruler’s people used paper money. He also described coal to the people of Venice. Even today we still use the same ship building methods that Marco described when he came home. Marco’s journey to China Marco had many journeys in his life. He traveled through deserts and some large mountains. It took 3 and a half years to travel from Venice to the Khan’s Palace. He saw many different customs and interesting people. On some missions for the Khan Marco visited places like Siberia, China, Burma, and India. On some missions Marco met traders and sailors. Marco traveled more than 24,000 miles on his journeys.

Spring 1997 (5.1) Just hearing the name "Marco Polo" conjures up images of fantastic adventures in exotic places. Of all the explorers who traveled the Silk Route from Europe to China during the Middle Ages, he is by far the most famous. "Marco Polo's Travels," which vividly describes his 24-year journey in the late 1300s, continues to capture the imagination of readers today, even as it did hundreds of years ago. Now, more than 700 years later, a small American-based expedition team from GlobaLearn is making it possible for 90,000 students from all over the world to retrace Marco Polo's historic footsteps without leaving their classrooms. The idea came from GlobaLearn's 28-year-old Founder and President Murat Armbruster. For little more than the price of a telephone call, he realized that he could make far corners of the globe come to life for a virtually unlimited number of students, simply by sending an expedition team to explore an area and having them post daily reports on the World Wide Web. Audio Listening Practices: Exploring Personal Experiences With Audio Texts

ReadWriteThink In this ReadWriteThink lesson, students keep a daily diary that records how and when they listen to radio, music, and other streaming media or archived broadcasts. Students then analyze the details and compare their results to published reports on American radio listeners. They conclude by reflecting on their findings and writing a final statement on their audio literacy practices and interests.
Dear Librarian: Writing a Persuasive Letter

ReadWriteThink In this ReadWriteThink lesson, students write to their school librarian, requesting that a specific text be added to the school library collection. They use persuasive writing skills as well as online tools to write a letter stating their case. Students then have an opportunity to share their letter with the librarian.
Xpeditions In this Xpeditions lesson, one of a multi-part unit on the Genographic Project, students consider ways in which the project is impacted by scientific and technological advances, including those in life sciences, communications, and transportation. They learn why indigenous communities play such a crucial role in unlocking the secrets of our common ancestry, examine how those communities are being threatened, make projections about future challenges to their ways of life, and consider how research such as the Genographic Project can play a role in preserving them. The Genographic Project, a partnership of the National Geographic Society and IBM, is a five-year study to understand the human journeywhere we came from and how humankind came to populate the planet.
