A CLUMSY FLOTILLA of 14 junks rolled through the South China Sea, propelled toward the Equator by the northeast monsoon. These were large ships for their time, a hundred feet long or more, with four masts and oars that took four men to pull. Each raised as many as a dozen sails, probably made of bamboo slats that rasped and clattered in the breeze. Marco Polo was aboard one of these junks, homeward bound with his father, Niccolo, and uncle, Maffeo. The year probably was 1291, perhaps 1292dates weren't Marco's strong suit.

We quickly remind ourselves that YOU are traveling with us and we are all learning so much about the world! Even though this kind of travel can be very hard, we know it's worth it, and hope you will travel the world someday yourselves. Would you like that? Well, until you can do this yourselves, let us tell you the stories of a few other explorers who have traveled the world.
Ferdinand Magellan Ferdinand Magellan is famous because he led a group of sailors all the way around the world. They were the first ones to do this in a boat. Magellan himself didn't have such good luck, though. First, the sailors didn't all like him and they kept trying to take over the boat from him! Then, after they went around the tip of South America (where part of it is now named after him - the Straits of Magellan), they completely guessed wrong about how big the Pacific Ocean is. They thought they could cross it in a few days. This is because they thought the earth was much smaller than it really is. Do you think you could cross the whole ocean in a few days? Well, it took them 4 months! They ran out of food and had to eat sawdust and rats and leather strips from the sails!

(Unfortunately only summary of this excellent work is available in English.) Can the explorers POL-s (alias Polo and Pollo) be called "The Venetian Polos"? - contrary to the Venetian documents, which say that they "came from Dalmatia", a Croatian maritime province. CHRONICON IUSTINIANI, 1358 (annotation) in the Venetian Bibliotheca Marciana. The Venetian manuscripts from: 1423., 1446., 1450/60., and the two documnets from the beginning of the 1600-ies. The Venetian chronicler Marino Sanudo junior writes to that effect in 1522.: "Poli di Dalmatia". See A. C. Moule: MARCO POLO, THE DESCRIPTION OF THE WORLD (London, 1938), 17, 19, 20. A. C. Moule says: "None of the large number of Venetian genealogies which we have been able to consult seems explicitly to recognize more than one family of Polo, namely "Polo di Dalmatia". Moule, 20. Giovanni Orlandini, the Venetian authority on our subject writes in 1926., that the genealogy of the Polos is not "chiara" (clear). He asserts that their generalogy is traceable in Venice as from the middle of the XIIIth century. He believes that the Polos had been gradually comming from the Near East ports and settling, after the year 1261., in Venice in the consequence of the downfall of the Near East latin Empire. See G. Orlandini "Marco Polo e la sua familia" in ARHIVIO VENETO TRIDENTINO, vol. IX. 1926., 1-68, especiall pp.: 1-3.

He sent them back to Venice as his ambassadors to the Pope. He sent a request for 100 wise men to teach his people about Christianity. They were given gold tablets to prove they were on the Khan's business so they would have safe passage. Kind of like the first passports! It took them three years to get home. The Pope had died and it was 2 years before another one was elected. Marco was 15 years old when his father returned and 17 years old when the set out on their return trip to the East.
