The Marco Polo Bridge The eleven arched marble Marco Polo Bridge is 16 km southwest of Beijing - about a one hour drive. It will take at most an hour to visit so it is usually combined with other destinations including the nearby Chinese People's Anti-Japanese War Museum. Originally built in 1192, the bridge was washed away in a 17th century flood and was rebuilt by Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722). Explorer Marco Polo of Venice, Italy describes the bridge in his writing and it is assumed he visited it. Marco Polo lived from 1254-1324 and and spent 16 years in China (1278-1292). He worked for Kublai Khan several years and later served as Governor of Yangzhou. After his time in China he returned to Venice where he fought against the Genoese and was captured. While in prison he wrote "The Travels of Marco Polo" which told of his adventures. The book fired the imagination of all Medieval Europe. Polo: the first European to travel to Asia and back

Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy and saw the possibilities of being an explorer so he also became one. He traveled through Asia and saw the beauties and great resources of what Asia owned. He then became a confidant of Kublai Khan and stayed in Asia for 24 years. Marco returned to tell the tale about the traveling through the countries of Asia, inspiring other explorers. SUMMARY
ETNIC ORIGIN OF THE EXPLORERS POLs (alias POLO-s)
Andjelko Nedo Paveškoviæ, Montecarlo
(Unfortunately only summary of this excellent work is available in English.) Can the explorers POL-s (alias Polo and Pollo) be called "The Venetian Polos"? - contrary to the Venetian documents, which say that they "came from Dalmatia", a Croatian maritime province. CHRONICON IUSTINIANI, 1358 (annotation) in the Venetian Bibliotheca Marciana. The Venetian manuscripts from: 1423., 1446., 1450/60., and the two documnets from the beginning of the 1600-ies. The Venetian chronicler Marino Sanudo junior writes to that effect in 1522.: "Poli di Dalmatia". See A. C. Moule: MARCO POLO, THE DESCRIPTION OF THE WORLD (London, 1938), 17, 19, 20. A. C. Moule says: "None of the large number of Venetian genealogies which we have been able to consult seems explicitly to recognize more than one family of Polo, namely "Polo di Dalmatia". Moule, 20. Giovanni Orlandini, the Venetian authority on our subject writes in 1926., that the genealogy of the Polos is not "chiara" (clear). He asserts that their generalogy is traceable in Venice as from the middle of the XIIIth century. He believes that the Polos had been gradually comming from the Near East ports and settling, after the year 1261., in Venice in the consequence of the downfall of the Near East latin Empire. See G. Orlandini "Marco Polo e la sua familia" in ARHIVIO VENETO TRIDENTINO, vol. IX. 1926., 1-68, especiall pp.: 1-3. A. C. Moule contends that the Pols genealogy can be traced in Venice, starting from the middle of the XIVth century. Moule, 20.

Marco Polo A research Report Marco Polo was born in 1253 in Venice, Italy. His father and uncle were merchants who traveled far into Asia when Marco was still young. Marco was 15 when they returned. His dad's stories were so wonderful that Marco decided to go with them to Asia when he was 17. The trip to Asia took four years. Marco used paper maps that showed water currents and the way the wind blew. The voyage was almost impossible because he had to hike across miles and miles of hot deserts and get ships to sail back to Venice. Marco stayed in Asia for 24 years. For the majority of the time Marco was governor of Yang Chow, at the time a blooming city. Eventually, Marco came back to Venice and told some of his stories. Our group thinks Marco is an explorer because he was very brave and he explored new lands. Marco started his journey in Venice and then Sailed to Damascus. From their, he walked across Asia's deserts and traded with Kubli Khan. Kubli Khan gave Marco a boat and he traveled southward, past Canton. Marco then sailed around the tip of India, past Calicut and through the canal between Arabia and Asia. Marco walked to Constantinople. After long journey, he sailed back to Venice with his goods. When Marco first came back to Venice, he was wearing tattered rags of traveling clothes but, he tore his clothes apart and a fortune of ivory, jade, jewels, porcelain, silk and other treasures fell out. After a few years in Venice, Marco became the captain of a ship and fought a naval battle against Genoa for rights to the Mediterranean trade routes. Marco was taken prisoner and, when he was in jail, he told his story to cell mate and later, Marco's family published it. He was released from prison 1299.

Yes, you probably think I'm crazy saying a pool party game founded most of the world we live in, but there was a real person called Marco Polo. Marco found a lot of Asia, which was not known to the rest of the world. Young Marco was born in Venice, Italy in 1252. His father, Nicolo Polo, was a sea merchant, so it's no surprise that Marco got his sea legs easily. Marco could take days at sea before he came back. Nothing could prepare him for this next journey. One day in Venice, Italy, Nicolo decided to bring Marco on his next trip to China. It took 6 years to get to their ultimate goal, China. On the way, Marco and his dad stopped at Armenia, Russia, Persia, and Macedonia. As an adult, Marco marveled at a number of different Chinese methods, such as coal used for heating, paper money, and many more. After many years away from home, Marco went back to Venice. Unfortunately, a war was going on between Genoa and Venice. So Marco joined the Venetian troops, but he got captured by Genoa's forces. While in prison, Marco entertained prisoners by telling them of his travels. One prisoner liked them so much that he wrote a book about Marco's travels called

Click on a thumbnail to enlarge Marco Polo bridge was first constructed in 1192, but the original stones were washed away in a 17th century flood. The reconstruction dates from that era. The bridge is famous because it is mentioned in the annals written by Marco Polo, a European explorer who visited the Mongol Yuan dynasty court in the 13th century. Though not exactly an engineering marvel, the bridge is 260 meters long with nearly 500 carved stone lions. It spans the Yongding river which was dry at the time of our visit. The fame of the bridge was not lost on the 18th century Emperor Qianlong, who inscribed calligraphy on a stele on the bridge. The bridge has occupied a place of notoriety in Chinese history since July 7, 1937, when Japanese troops fired the first shots that led China into World War II. On the fateful day, Japanese troops overwhelmed a railway junction in the nearby town of Wanping and incited Chinese troops to attack their position. This failed, but it gave Japan an excuse to occupy Beijing.

The Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara must accompany Polo as he travels across the desert to the court in Peking, and at the same time unearth the malevolent plotting of Tegana, an agent of a rival warlord whose mission is to assassinate the Khan. Production Before moving to Britain, Doctor Who creator Sydney Newman had made a name for himself at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. There, he met a writer named John Lucarotti, who had been supplying scripts for CBC Radio since the mid-Fifties including a fifteen-part serial in 1956 about Marco Polo. Lucarotti followed Newman when the latter moved to ABC in England, where he wrote for series such as The Avengers (for which he also declined the post of story editor), Ghost Squad and City Beneath The Sea By the time Newman recommended him to Doctor Who story editor David Whitaker, Lucarotti had taken up residence in Majorca, but returned to London in late June 1963 to meet with Whitaker and producer Verity Lambert. Lucarotti was interested in writing an historical adventure for

Marco Polo - The Label of Discovery
The traveller Marco Polo, who visited the court of the Mongol Emperors of China in the thirteenth century Yuen Dynasty, brought many tales of his adventures back to Italy, where he was soon known as a man of a million lies. A credulous enough people refused to believe the strange events and customs that Marco Polo had himself witnessed. The Marco Polo record label tells no lies, but brings to listeners a million wonders, music of all kinds from many countries that may sound strange or familiar in musical language, but is generally new. Most of what is recorded appears for the first time on compact disc. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well enough known composers. The great Russian nationalist composers, the Mighty Handful, Rimsky-Korsakov Borodin Mussorgsky Balakirev and Cui were not unfamiliar, but lesser known works by these composers were included in early Marco Polo catalogues Since those days many changes have taken place in public taste and in the availability of recorded music to listeners. The development of the compact disc has, even more than the earlier long-playing record, brought an ever wider repertoire of music into the home. Composers that were once little known, are now heard with some frequency. With this change in taste and knowledge, the Marco Polo label has widened its own horizons to explore even further afield. This exploration has not concentrated its attempts entirely on late romantic repertoire, although here there was an obvious store of music that had immediate attractions. The field of activity was to be greater than this. In opera Marco Polo turned its attention to

Index Cover Released November 2003 Publisher: BBC By John Lucarotti The First Doctor, William Hartnell, and his companions join the caravan of the legendary explorer Marco Polo in this seven-part 'lost' story from the programme's original 1964 series. The TARDIS materialises at the Roof of the World, Central Asia, in 1289. There they meet Marco Polo and his fellow travellers, on their mammoth journey across the Pamir Plateau and through the Gobi desert to Peking. Unfortunately for the Doctor, his Ship proves to be of immense interest to Polo, who sets his mind on presenting it to the mighty Kublai Khan on arrival at his court. But Polo isn't the only one with designs on the TARDIS. The war-like Tegana will go to any lengths to steal the magical blue box - lengths which endanger the lives of all the travellers. When the Doctor meets Kublai Khan himself, his precious Ship is his only collateral in a high-stakes game of backgammon - and Khan is a master of the game... William Russell, Jacqueline Hill and Carole Ann Ford co...star as the Doctor's companions, whilst Mark Eden plays the explorer Marco Polo.
