About 1275, close to the time the Polos arrived at the court of Kublai Khan, two Nestorian Christian monks left Daidu (modern Beijing) on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. One of the two, Rabban Sauma, would become the first person known to travel from Beijing to Paris, and, like Marco, he would leave a record of his journey. chass.colostate-pueblo.edu/history/seminar/sauma/sawma1.htm The China WWW Virtual Library: Internet Guide for China Studies sun.sino.uni-heidelberg.de/igcs

Imagine that one of your parents has asked you to accompany him or her on a long trip from Europe to eastern China, retracing the steps of Marco Polo. Now all you can think about is what it will look like there, what the people will be like, what you should pack, and what your friends and relatives will want you to bring back to share with them. (You can let your mom or dad worry about everything else.) Perhaps explorer Marco Polo wondered about these things. The Travels of Marco Polo
by Marco Polo (approx. 1254 - 1324)
(as told to Rusticiano da Pisa and edited by Francis R, Gemma; originally titled A DESCRIPTION OF THE WORLD
Type of Work:
Autobiographical adventure
Setting
Venice, Italy and overland to Eastern China (Cathay)
Principal Characters
Marco Polo, a young nobleman, traveling merchant and adventurer Niccolo Polo, Marco's father, also a merchant Maffeo Polo, Niccolo's brother and business partner Kublai Khan, Emperor of China, descendent of Ghenghis Khan
Historical Overview
Prologue: (The book contains the story of Marco Polo's life and his travels from his home in Venice, Italy across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to the court of Khan, located in the area now known as Beijing, China. Marco was much liked by the Emperor, who made him his ambassador. The explorer describes his many adventures during his 26-year absence from home. An introduction outlines the biographical events (each that he himself personally witnessed or "heard tell by persons worthy of faith"), and sets us on our way with Marco en route to China.) Two wealthy Venetian gentleman-merchants, Niccolo and Maffeo Polo, sailed eastward from Venice about 1254, leaving Niccolo's infant son, Marco, in the care of his aunt. The travelers journeyed as far as the court of the great emperor Kublai Khan, where they became highly favored. After learning a little about the exotic Catholic religion of his guests, the Khan dispatched envoys to return with them to Italy to meet with the Pope. His desire was that the Pope should lend the services of as many as a hundred scholars to come to his court and prove that the Law of Christ was "most agreeable." If they succeeded, he vowed that he and all his subjects would become Christians.

Tip Built in 1996, the Marco Polo Trail was one of the first in the country to truly embrace the 'biopark' concept -the idea of combining cultural, historical and zoological experiences. The Marco Polo Trail is a multifaceted exhibit tracing a three-year journey of explorer Marco Polo through Asia.
To give visitors a sense of the culture and history of the era, the Zoo recreated scenes from Marco Polo's journey including a Venetian plaza, Bedouin tent and the hull of a 13th century trading vessel. Along the trail through the 2.5-acre exhibit, visitors encounter animals native to the countries Marco Polo visited. Three habitats are featured - the Dromedary camel , the 'ship of the desert'; the elusive snow leopard , an endangered species hunted almost to extinction; and the moon bear , also known as the Himalayan or Asian black bear.

How Low Can Polo Go? In an inspired revisionist comedy, Marco Polo is a lech and a scoundrel By Mike Connor ACCORDING TO HISTORICAL record, Marco Polo, the son of a Venetian merchant, allegedly traveled around Asia for 24 years in search of trading routes. A few years after his return to Italy, Polo was imprisoned for unexplained reasons, during which time he supposedly dictated his book, Description of the World , to his cell mate, the Arthurian romance novelist Rusticello de Pisa. Writer/director Ali el-Gasseir takes the tenuous myth of Marco Poloauthor, explorer extraordinaire and discoverer of spaghettiand fleshes it out into the sordid, oft-times hilarious story of a lecherous businessman. Here Polo is a man whose most exciting adventures in Asia only revolved around great deals ("I once made 150 percent profit trading salts for musk!"), a man who, without the better judgment of his cell mate, would have named his book Yellow Fever: Marco Polo's Romp in the Brown Eye of Bangkok Cut to bedroom scene, where a sleazy, silk pajama-clad Marco Polo (Richard Thierot) is groping Constanza (Jessica Hammon), a pouty, pregnant prostitute who wants to get married. She corners the reluctant Polo with the Genovese law that deems premarital sex a crime punishable by death. The smooth-talking Polo succeeds in charming the pants off her, but lands in jail anyway after he's accused of spying by Constanza's jealous client Angelo (Kenneth Rudnicki).

The World's Greatest Overland Explorer When Marco Polo returned to Venice, Italy, from his 24-year excursion to Asia in 1295, he told of things medieval Europeans could not imagine: rocks that burned, houses that were moved around on immense wagons, and the great Kublai Khan himself, surrounded by staggering luxury. Marco Polo gave Europeans their first glimpse of life in the Far East, but many disbelieved his stories. Polo, Marco
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 3 items Polo, Marco (1254-1324), Venetian traveler and author, whose account of his travels and experiences in China offered Europeans a firsthand view of Asian lands and stimulated interest in Asian trade. Marco Polo was born in Venice, one of the most prominent centers of trade in medieval Europe, into a merchant family. Venetian merchants of the day traded regularly throughout the Mediterranean region. They also maintained trading posts in port cities on the Black Sea, where they obtained silk, porcelain, and other goods that came from China over the Silk Road , an ancient trade route linking China with Rome. Little is known about Marco Polo’s early life, because his own account of his travels, published later in his life, is the primary source of biographical material about him. Polo probably received a fairly typical education for children of merchants at that time, learning how to read, write, and calculate.
