164. MIXED PICKLES - The Polka
of the polka by Henri Cellarius, written in 1858.......
http://www.mixedpickles.org/polka.html
MIXED PICKLES
The Polka
T he polka is danced in two-four time, to a march movement, and rather slow
I shall now endeavor to give an idea of the step, but I must again pray my readers to excuse the dryness of these details, as of all others of the same kind. Here, more than ever, I must lay aside all pretensions to elegance of style, and attend only to clearness and exactitude.
T he step of the polka is divided into three measures.
F or the first, the left heel should be raised to the side of the right leg, without passing it behind, and so as to slightly touch the calf. In this position you jump upon the right foot, in order to give the spring to the left, which makes a glissade forward, in fourth position.
T he second and third times are composed of two short steps, made lightly by either foot, care being taken that both feet should find themselves nearly in the same line.
A t the second short step, the right leg is raised, the heel being near the lower part of hte left calf, and the fourth bar is suffered to pass, which occasions three bars only to be marked. You then recommence with the other foot, and soon with the rest.
T he gentleman should always begin with the left foot, and the lady with the right, as in the ordinary waltz.

total pages: 221 148 black and white photographs softcover published: 1992 Publisher: Temple University Press Philadelphia 19122 USA Review by Henry Doktorski Polka Happiness is a study of the polka in America; specifically the Polish-American style in Buffalo and Chicago but also including a comparative chapter on Slovenian-American style in Milwaukee. The authors had no polka scholarship to draw on when they started. To research their book, they attended dances and booster club meetings; they traveled to national and regional polka conventions; they interviewed musicians, promoters, disc jockeys, and fans; and they consulted community publications and leaders to learn as much as they could about Polonia, as Polish-Americans call their community. I learned a great deal of fascinating history from this book. Did you know that the legendary origin of this dance is just as much mythology as history? The traditional story relates how a Czech servant girl invented the polka in the 1830s and that a local schoolmaster is said to have observed her song and dance. He wrote down the tune and the first polka was born. However, from one encyclopedia to another, the name of the servant girl changes and also the name of the town.

168. Aphorisms On The Polka
Quotes about the polka and passion.
http://www.lavoltapress.com/dance/quote.htm
Selections from Coralli's Aphorisms on the Polka, 1845
  • The contre-danse agrees with sanguine characters; the galop, with bilious characters; the waltz with lymphatic characters; the polka with nervous and passionate characters. The polka and the virtue of women are two questions of temperament. The polka is not a dance for young girls; they are too stiff, too dry, too awkward. The polka needs women, women of thirty, real women. In the man, as in the woman, it is necessary that the heart beats high and strong. Tell me how you polka, and I will tell you how you love. Not to polka with the woman that one loves is like doing the polka with the woman that one hates. There is no worse female polka dancer than she who sleeps. The best male polka dancers make good female polka dancers. A woman who has only one male polka dancer is not thought a coquette. The woman who has several is believed to be nothing but a coquette. There are few polka secrets. It is better that women are not known by the names of their husbands than by those of their polka partners. Male polka dancers are the reason that women do not love themselves.

We have danced in 277 dance venues in Texas and 114 in other states This site is intended to help others learn about polka and Cajun dancing in Texas. -sponsored, Fritz's Polka Band (FPB) was formed in 1978 by lead accordionist, Fred Scherz Sr., and his eight-year old son, Fritz, for whom the band was named. FPB performs an eclectic mix of musical styles, including modern polka, country, fox-trot, waltz, and more! Fritz's Polka Band is NOT an oompa pa band or the stereotypical "polka" band. In fact, FPB is known for breaking the stereotype regarding "polka" music. FPB is the first polka band to perform at a Woodstock Festival! FPB has performed on stage with "Canada's Polka King," Walter Ostanek (three-time Grammy winner), "America's Polka King," the late Frank Yankovic (Grammy winner), LynnMarie Rink (Grammy nominee), and Glen Burtnik. Additionally, Fritz has performed on stage with Steve Augeri (lead singer of Journey).
