UPDATE - August 28, 2005 - NEW! A new song from me!
Welcome to THE site for happy, snappy music. Featuring Polkas, Waltzes, Celtic, German, Country, Folk and much more. This page is a result of my hobby of sequencing MIDI files. I am happy to provide my sequences for your listening pleasure along with MIDI's of others as well. So "clap your hands" and "tap your toes" and get ready for some FUN music. Train videos available. Click here for information. NEW! After almost 6 years I finally finished a song I started. Welcome the Texas Waltz to my original MIDI line-up. When I first started working on MIDI music, it was back in the old Windows 98 age. Now with XP Pro, I had no MIDI sequencer software installed. I didn't want to get into hundreds of dollars getting new software.
During a search on the internet for a composer, I came across Anvil Studio , what seems to be a great 'little' sequencer.
Anvil Studio ™
is a free Windows XP/2000/ME/98/95 program designed for people who want to work with MIDI. Visit their web site for more information on this great program.
Hopefully I'll have some time to complete a few more I had planned to do. Enjoy!

JIMMY STURR TO PERFORM AT
20TH FARM AID IN CHICAGO
Farm aid began in 1985 when Willie Nelson, inspired by comments from Bob Dylan at live aid, along with Neil Young and John Mellencamp, hosted a day-long music benefit for family farmers in Champaign, Ill. Willie Nelson stated, "It’s good to be back in Illinois, where it all started. I know that Chicago is a ‘hot-bed’ for polkas, Jimmy and his band will tear the place up. I'm looking forward to playing on the farm aid stage, especially performing a few tunes with Jimmy." "Farmers have a tremendous impact on the quality of food that we eat," said Farm Aid board' member John Mellencamp. "Farm Aid is always a great show, but even more important is that Farm Aid helps the consumer and the family farmer work together for the benefit of us all," he added.

147. Polka Dance
The town of Kostelec nad Labem claims to be the birthplace of the polka.
http://kostelec-nad-labem.misto.cz/_MAIL_/polkaen.htm
Polka - popular Czech dance Kostelec nad Labem is birth place of the Czech dance - Polka. In 1834 Anna Chadimova came to Kostelec nad Labem from the Sedlcany county. She served in the Klastersky family. Anna was well-tempered, she always sang and danced when she worked. The Klastersky were a musical family. Preceptor Josef Neruda taught their childern to play the piano. Anna enthraled Neruda, she was always happy and her favourite song was "Nimra". Neruda let her sing it for him and he composed music to the song. Anna happily danced to that melody. The melody and step of the dance become known to the young people in the town. They danced in the streets and in the pub at night. The dance become very popular and was introduced to Prague. The polka comes to the world with love from Kostelec nad Labem. The destiny of both people responsible for birth of polka dance wasn't a fairytale. Anna died as a beggar and preceptor Neruda was murdered. Some music samples of classic polka.

153. Rec.Arts.Dance FAQ: Polka
Brief history, links, explanation of polka dots.
http://www.eijkhout.net/rad/dance_specific/polka.html
Polka
History
The Polka is originally a Czech peasant dance. There is a story that it was invented by a peasant girl, one Sunday. By 1833 it had reached Prague, and from there it went on to Paris, the rest of the continent and the US. In England it never became very popular. After the second world war, Polish immigrants in the US adopted the dance, although the name has nothing to do with Poland: Pulka is Czech for 'half-step'. In states such as Minnesota polka is still very popular. Polka is also a country and western dance. While the UCWDC is known to have adopted Houston style CW2S, they did not adopt our version of Polka. At the time the UCWDC was forming and gaining power, our version of Polka did not have lilt, in fact the word was never applied to Polka here. I worked my tail off to get rid of the bounce that most newbies have naturally. It was desired that you be as smooth as possible, and some instructors referred to the count as QQS,QQS, while others wanted you to apply equal time to each of the three steps in each triple. Along comes the UCWDC and the term "lilt", and we all start making it look like progressive East Coast Swing.:>)) [Bob Wheatley]

Theresa, a middleschool student from Wisconsin, gives tips on polka dancing for beginners.
http://www.mcpasd.k12.wi.us/~kms/moenwebprojects/webht8778/
Welcome to Theresa's Page!
Polka is a lot of fun. There is Polka music, and then there is the Polka dance that goes with it. Below are my favorite Polka singer and my favorite Polka group.
  • Alvin Stychinski
  • The Polka Family I have two favorite Polka songs, too. They are...
  • Hosa Dyna
  • Minka Almost all Polka songs have, at least, the Accordion. "Minka" is a song with only the Accordion. Other instruments used is Polka music are the Trumpet, the Trombone, the Cornet and other brass instruments, the Clarinet, and sometimes the Piano.
Now I will go through the steps of Polka dancing.
  • You need to have a partner to dance with, or else you will look Schizophrenic.
  • Next, you need to find a Polka song that has a good beat, if you're a beginner. You don't want to get a really fast song either. "Minka" is a really fast song and it wouldn't be a good song for a beginner.
  • You and your partner will be using the same foot when you dance, so when you use your left foot, your partner uses their left foot. You and your partner will dance either side by side or facing each other. When dancing side by side, you go forward and dance right-left-right, left-right-left, right-left-right, left-right-left and so-on. When dancing facing each other, one person will be dancing backwards and one person will be dancing forwards. You do the same right-left-right dancing as you do when dancing side by side.
When you get good at doing that, you can interchange the two ways of Polka dancing. Once you get good at doing THAT, you can spin around the dance floor when dancing you dance facing each other. If you interchange the ways of dancing AND you and your partner are able to spin when facing each other, try to face each other and spin at the climaxes of the Polka song and dance side by side on other parts of the Polka song.

    158. Texas Polka
    Two easy methods, with diagrams.
    http://www.geocities.com/goodolejoe/polka2.html
How to Polka - Texas Style Doing the polka is fun and great exercise.  Texas style polka is a little slower than Northern style and not as strenuous as the Polish style. You can practice it by yourself or preferably with a partner.  In Texas, there are two ways to do the polka: the very simple way, which I call the "Straight dance" and the little more complicated Czech style which I call the "Double shuffle". I will describe each in detail.  If you are a beginner, start with the "Straight dance" first until you get the rhythm down pat.  Then go to the "Double shuffle", which is a lot more fun. "Miroslav" Courtesy of Frank Kubena
    Preliminary Steps:
    • First stand up and listen to the music, concentrate on the polka beat Use your finger as a baton to conduct the imaginary polka band Sway your upper body to the polka beat Walk in place, swaying hips, to the polka beat Repeat the above with different polka tunes until you have the polka rhythm down pat
    Dance Positions:
    • Left arm up and out, about shoulder height.  Slight crook at the elbow. Gentlemen - Right arm around partners waist Ladies - Right arm around partners shoulder.

Essay points out that the polka, while popular among PolishAmericans, is not really a Polish dance like the polonaise or mazurka. Several photos. Includes bibliography.

    POLISH DANCES
    POLKA
Essay by Maja Trochimczyk Costumes Description History Music
    HISTORY
The modern Polish-American favourite dance, the polka is a lively couple-dance in a moderately fast duple meter. Because of its acceptance as a ethnic symbol by Polish immigrants to North America, the polka is gradually increasing its position among Polish dances and is often present in the repertoire of Polish folk dance ensembles in the U.S. The dance, however, is not Polish; it is not enumerated among the five "national" dances of Poland which include: polonaise, kujawiak, mazur, oberek, and krakowiak
    Polka by Zofia Stryjeñska, 1927.
According to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the polka originated in Bohemia around 1830 as a round-dance, and became popular throughout Europe and in America in the course of the 19th century. The name "polka" is derived from Czech words for "field" or "half;" in other interpretations the name relates to the Czech term for a Polish girl, "polska," in reference to the krakowiak dance-songs which the Bohemians adopted for their polkas. It is interesting to note that the word "Polka" means "Polish woman" in Polish. Music with the polka's characteristics appears in various collections written about 1800 for practical use by village musicians. In the 19th century polkas were composed by the leading composers of ballroom music of the 19th century (including both Johann Strausses); examples occur in art music by Smetana, Dvorak, and others. In the following years polka was performed in many countries all over the world such as Austria, France, England, USA and India. It attained extraordinary popularity, so much so that clothes, hats, streets and even dishes were named after it (e.g. "polka dots").
