Over the past forty years and approximately 160 dates per year, this Grammy award-winning group is known for its modern blend of polka originals, covers and standards that have pleased people in over 6000 appearances, touring the USA, Canada, France, Austria, Mexico, and Poland. They have recorded over 57 albums and received over 125 miscellaneous awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the International Polka Association, the United States Polka Association, the United Polka Boosters and the United Polka Association. Eddie Blazonczyk was born in Chicago in 1941, the son of immigrants from the rural Tatra Mountain region of southern Poland. His mother directed and sang in a Gorale (Mountaineer), music and dance ensemble in which he participated as a child. His father performed in a Gorale band on the cello. From a very young age, he was destined for a life in music. After a brief stay in Poland, Eddie returned to America where his parents operated the Pulaski Ballroom and the Mountaineer Tavern.

MEMORY LANE
Hey, thanks for coming to my home-page. Some of my sweetest and most memorable moments are from when I was a little tyke. Family members would all get together, and musical instruments would be pulled out. I grew up loving this music, and I guess it will always stay with me, as I am sure there are others out there that feel the same as I do. I will be adding more to to this page, so come back and see me again. I enjoy hearing from you. I also have links to my Waltz, Oldies, and Country Pages a little bit further down this page. Feel free to check them out also. Please sign my Guestbook before you leave. I do love hearing from you. IF ANY OF THESE MIDI"S BELONG TO ANYONE PLEASE EMAIL ME SO I CAN CREDIT IT TO YOU The people credited within these pages, do not take credit for composing the music, only for creating the midis.

"The Clarinet Polka"
(Reviewed by Judi Clark Jun 18, 2003) "I was feeling almost cheery, and I thought, well, shit, if I'm serious about this, I've got to get a set of new tires and a tune-up and a brake job. And I've got to give Vick some notice; it's only fair. And maybe I should call up Doren's old man and tell him I'm coming. And I was feeling really pleased with myself, you know, because I was being so sensible and responsible - even though the reality of it was that I hadn't managed to get out of bed yet." When Jimmy Koprowski got out of the service in 1969, the plan was to go to Austin, Texas and wait for his two best buddies to get out and then the three of them would meet up at a bar. So Jimmy loads up his car with a cooler full of beer and a few bottles of Jack Daniels and starts driving. Damned if he doesn't end up back in his hometown of Raysburg, West Virginia living at this parent's house, with "Old Bullet Head," his father, watching and reminding him whenever he fails. Naturally, he keeps telling himself that he's going to get out of Raysburg and head to Texas, even after he learns that one of his buddies has been killed in the war.

When the phase "folk music" comes up, most people think of the Pete Seeger / Arlo Guthrie "riding the rails and being hungry in America" sound, the tunes that Peter, Paul, and that big blonde made so famous. But there's lots of other real music made by real people, and polka music is about as diametrically opposed as possible. Bright, bubbly, and filled with danceable beats, this was the pop music that ruled central Europe 150 years ago. I don't know what's on the charts in Brno or Graz today, but polka music survives in small pockets in the Upper Midwest, New York State, and Nebraska. My folks and their friends went out every weekend as I grew up, had a whiskey sour, and danced all evening long. These folks are still around, and you need to broaden your musical horizons by visiting Big Joe Siedlik. He's the genial host of Big Joe's Polka Hour , rotund and often clad in accordion-themed vests. Up in front of the Big Plywood Dance Floor, a string of bands gets up to entertain the often elderly crowd. Many bands are astonishingly bad, like The Polkatones out of South Omaha, who add new dimension to the word "wooden." Occasionally the lead accordionist breaks out in song reminiscent of a phlegmatic call to the pigs at dinnertime, but that's the high point of their act. After two tunes, it's on the slightly more talented is the Leonard Havarex Band, featuring dueling trombonists and a promotional suitcase strategically located in front of the kick drum. At least these guys don't sing in border Polish. Later in the show, a pretty decent Joe Beano Band takes the stage, sounding a bit better and knocking off a few standards of the genre. What tunes did they play? Hard to say, but the titles are mostly Polish and talk about love and dancing. What else do real folks sing about?

by tim mcmahan A ll right. Here it is, a true confession: I was in a polka band for two years. I'm neither proud nor ashamed of this fact polka is polka. But before you stop laughing and start lobbing "Beer-Barrel-Polka"-flavored insults my way, keep in mind that at least I'm one of the few music critics who can say he's actually been in a band. I played saxophone (ours was an unconventional lineup), and we were known as The Polka Pioneers, named after our Fort Calhoun High School mascot. We played mainly at pig roasts and hog-shed dedications throughout Washington County. Although playing polka wasn't the coolest thing you could do in high school, the Led Zeppelin-worshipping dirt-heads who smoked cigarettes outside the metal shop between classes never made fun of us. They knew we made money at gigs where we could meet women and even sneak a beer or two when no one was looking. Grammy winner Brave Combo, the Denton, Texas, 5-piece that's scheduled to play Sokol Underground Sept. 28, also is a polka band, though in a much larger league than my beloved Pioneers. They've been cranking out a modernized polka sound for more than 21 years, picking up such fans as Talking Heads' David Byrne, legendary rock critic Lester Bangs, MTV's Kurt Loder (back in his

The Polish-American Musician in Twentieth-Century Detroit
    Laurie A. Gomulka Palazzolo
Introduction by Dr. Thaddeus C. Radzilowski
Foreword by Dr. Ann Hetzel Gunkel Detroit and its strong Polish community share in America's rich history of Polish music and customs. Horn Man documents that history and details the development of the Polish-American musicians in Detroit who became known as "polka musicians," even though their music was remarkably diversified. The book reveals how the Polish musical customs and traditions developed around the liturgical calendar and how new Polish musical traditions were born in America and Detroit.
This regional study by the daughter of one of the prominent Polish-American bandleaders in Detroit discusses the rich tradition of the Polish wedding in Detroit and the evolution of the music that accompanied not just the Polish wedding, but all Polish-American events.
Horn Man , with its vivid pictures and narrative, brings honor and a renewed credibility to Detroit's legacy of Polish-American music and tradition.

Rock 'N Polka Jimmy Sturr Music from Rounder Select Release date: 14 September, 2004 Rock 'n Polka is a bouncy, toe-tapping novelty album that may not have a ton of staying power but is fun to listen to a few times (or to bring out at parties, who knows). As the Los Angeles Times noted in an article this past April, few artists have as many Grammys as Jimmy Sturr (for the record, he's got 14 of them), but many are more well-known. That's largely because Sturr and his band play polka music (and really, while one of his band members says "we're a minority," that's clearly an understatement: how many polka bands are there, anyway, and how many of them are really very good?).

    America's Ethnic Music Mantle
By Jay Hardwig "Polka serves the need for people to have a music that, at least to some degree, just represents an escape from all other things in their life. Pop music doesn't do that anymore. Country music never did it. These are musics that just sort of reflect your misery constantly you just wallow in it. Polka is a departure from that. It's like, 'Life is hard, we worked hard this week; this weekend we're gonna go dance the polka.' It's a music people turn to when they need a fix of something good in their life." Brave Combo's Carl Finch, on the therapeutic effects of polka It's a gray and lonely day in the fields east of Temple. The land is soaked and sodden, undone by bucketfuls of rain the sun nowhere to be seen. There's a solitary cow, curious and remote, stranded on high ground a few feet from a creek that has jumped its banks. The pavement runs joyless through this watery stretch of land, streetside signs announcing the wrong towns: Sparks, Heidenheimer, Splawn. But no Seaton. At a gas station in Rogers, the clerk points noncommittally west. "Take a left at the stoplight," she says. "We only got one."
