Frank Piotrowski Muskegon, Michigan native Frank Piotrowski was introduced to Polish music at an early age at the city's Polish Falcon club where both Frank's parents were very actively involved. When he was in high school, Frank began playing the piano accordion. In 1972 he formed a polka band to play at a talent show. When an audience member at the show asked him to
perform at an upcoming wedding reception, the Polka Towners were launched. While steeped in the Polish-style polka music heard locally, Frank's music was also heavily influenced by Chicago-based musicians: the Pala Brothers Orchestra, Lil' Wally, and Eddie Blazonczyk. In an effort to have the Polka Towners sound a bit different from other Polka bands, Frank incorporated twin fiddles into the group. He says that violins were once common in the Polka music of the mountainous regions of Poland the fiddles; today the fiddles bring a country flavor to his groups' music.

In this section of our site about Poland we concentrate on Polish folk and Polka music. We aim to make available: a range of traditional Polish folk and Polka songs in MP3 files to download for free; the words or lyrics to these Polish songs in Polish, with English translations; and general information about Polish folk and Polka music. Our main focus is on the light, fun, dance, village side of Polish music. Polish Songs and Lyrics Free Polish MP3 Soundfiles Most of the songs and lyrics we feature might be classified as either Polish folk music or Polish polka. Polish folk music contains elements from all over present day Poland, so contains Polish, Prussian, German, Czech, Slovakian, Russian and Ukrainian influences. With Polish folk music it is the melody which is the most important element of the songs. Polka is a lively dance for couples in 2/4 time, which developed from folk music roots in Poland. Both forms of Polish music are perfect for weddings and other such celebrations. If you have any suggestions or songs you would like to see added to this part of our site, please contact us. Maybe you've got a favorite Polish - American song you'd like to see translated into English? Or perhaps you have an MP3 you'd like us to add to the site for others to enjoy? This site will always be free!

Let's Have A Party Polka(370K)
HISTORY OF THE VRAZELS' POLKA BAND 1953 - 1998 The Vrazels' Polka Band is celebrating their 45th year of playing music not just in Texas, but many other states as well. Anton and Alfred Vrazel are the sons of Mrs. Albina Vrazel and the late Lawrence Vrazel, Sr. and are life-long residents of the Yarrellton-Marak communities near Cameron, Milam County, Texas. Their interest in music started early in life. At the age of ten, Alfred talked his parents into buying him his first accordion. He purchased a two row Horner button accordion from Sears for $32.00. A short time later, Anton began playing the piano accordion and Alfred switched to playing the tenor and alto saxophones and guitar. The band was originally known as Vrazels' Playboys and consisted of Alfred, Anton and their three cousins, Leo, Louis, and Ladis Vrazel. They began playing at small stores and halls such as The Oscar Store near Temple, Three Oaks near Cameron, Country Bar and Grocery Store in Marak, Otto's Place in Taylor, The Wagon Wheel lnn in Beyersville, Tom Sefcik Hall in Seaton and SPJST Hall in Buckholts. At some of their first engagements they received no regular salary, just small donations from appreciative listeners and dancers. This probably was the origin of the Vrazel Band motto, "Playing for our Friends".

Types of polka music in U.S. today
Posted to alt.music.polkas by Paul Gifford on 1997/07/22. Reprinted by permission. The subject line says it all. How many types of polka music are there in the U.S. today? Here's a list and I welcome comments, criticism, corrections, etc. Maybe common repertoires should be the main division, rather than sound or instrumentation.
  • Chicago/Polish-American style. 1st trumpet, 2nd trumpet playing harmony, accordion bellows shake. Blazonczyk, Marion Lush, etc. Does the "East Coast" style deserve its own classification or is it better to regard it as a variety of Polish-American (Bernie Witkowski, etc.)? What about string- based groups, as "Orchestra Polonia," directed by Frank Kurzawa, of Detroit (1960s)? Same thing for concertina groups? How many current Polish-American styles are there? Cleveland/Slovenian style. Accordion lead, tenor banjo accompaniment. Frankie Yankovic. Also button boxes. Czech. Button accordion lead, tuba. Popular in Nebraska, elsewhere. Bohemian.

Polka: The Changes and Developments Through the Years Written by: Mollie Busta Mollie Busta. Reprinted by permission. Music of the people; music brought from the European home land; music people take pride in; music that brings smiles to faces; music that combines the heritage of yesterday with the musical ideas from today... what is this music, you ask? It is POLKA.
    The Beginning
As immigrants came to the United States, so did their possessions, their heritage, and their music. The immigrants often carried a small instrument with them allowing them to play polkas: fiddle, button box, or hexagonal concertina all which became primary instruments in bands that played polkas in the United States. It was common for these travelers to bring out their instruments during the migration to “spice up” the long journey. The button box and the “concertina player could replace a small ensemble, producing melodies and harmonies on the right hand while the left hand provided rhythmic chords and bass notes, [making them a] prized possession in the immigrant’s pack” (March 3). Once the travelers settled, their music did not stop. It became quite common for all the neighbors to gather at a home, roll up the rug, play music, and dance.
    Through the Years
When immigrants settled in the United States, they formed communities with people from the same country. They worked together, partied together, cried together, and entertained together, keeping strong their European heritage. In the nineteenth-century the polka, along with other couple dances, was enjoyed in “cleared-out kitchens during house parties, on granary floors and grassy summer picnic grounds, atop outdoor platforms assembled for weddings, and in fraternal halls and the ballrooms adjacent to family-run taverns” (Leary 1).

Q How did you first get interested in polka music? Q -What did you think of John Candy s spoof on polka music? A - Well, that didn t bother me.
    http://www.classicbands.com/JimmySturrInterview.html
    Gary James' Interview With
    Jimmy Sturr

In the world of Polka, they don't come much bigger than Jimmy Sturr.
Let's put it this way: Jimmy Sturr and his Orchestra are to polka fans what Benny Goodman was to the Swing crowd in 1937 or what Dizzy Gillespie stood for with the boppers in 1947.
Jimmy Sturr's popularity has resulted in his group being voted The Number One Polka Band In The Country for the past fifteen years. Their recordings have earned both Album Of The Year and Song Of The Year in the music industry.
Q - Jimmy, last year you won your 13th Grammy Award. Did that surprise you?
A - Well, you're always surprised when you win a Grammy. It's a good surprise and a good feeling.
Q - How much competition do you have?
A - Well, there's a lot of it. There's some great bands around the country...some great polka bands.
Q - When you win a Grammy, does that mean your asking price goes up?
A - I don't think so, no. A band like ours is just on the road all the time, and has been for quite a few years. We do approximately 160 dates a year. In the polka field, you can only get so much financially out of it. Q - What is the audience for your music? Are you getting the younger generation at your concerts?

Texas' Brave Combo Finds Mainstream Appeal
    Written By Paula Felps
W ith its third Grammy Award nomination, Brave Combo just might get the one thing it as spent two decades looking for understanding. The band from Denton, Texas, has spent the last 20 years on an international crusade to prove that it is a serious force to be reckoned with but, despite an impressive pedigree, the group's party image often has overshadowed its serious musicianship. "We've never been comfortable with being perceived as a party band," explained founder Carl Finch, who was a disc jockey in a country-western bar when he launched his polka band in 1979. "For us, it has always been about making good music. There have been times when I haven't felt that what we've done was wacky at all, but people have interpreted it that way." That interpretation is due at least in part to the band's propensity for taking rock 'n' roll standards and reinventing them as frolicking polka tunes. The band's musical toybox also includes reggae, zydeco, Muzak, ska and conjunto music, all played with a rock attitude. Although Finch and his bandmates have always taken polka music seriously, their approach often left critics baffled. Even those who praised the band's musicianship often missed the point, viewing it as parody. When the band performed The Doors' "People Are Strange" as a hora (a type of Romanian or Israeli folk music) or "I Can See For Miles" as a polka, many saw it as a finely crafted punch line to an inside musical joke.

    The Art Of Being Brave
    by Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe
They rock in the homecoming party at the University of North Texas every fall. They were the sole act to close Fort Worth's Caravan of Dreams and they marched under the Woody Woodpecker balloon in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. They are the weirdest band at a rock 'n' roll club one weekend and the weirdest band at a polka club the next. After a performance on the road, they'll be taking in a performance by a lounge band at a tiny casino in the middle of Nevada. Since 1979, this five-piece miniature orchestra has been an institution in Denton, inspiring countless other garage bands such as Schwantz Lefantz (in the early years) and Riddle Me This (of more recent history). They have Grammy's 1999 award for best polka band and inspired the Denton City Council to declare an official week in their name. This year, citing the simple commonality as artists sharing the same planet, they worked with the award-winning children's recording artists Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer to release All Wound Up! A Family Music Party, a compact disc of children's music on the Rounder label. They are Brave Combo, and what makes them go for so long and with so much creative success is an intelligent combination of folkloric savvy, present-day artistic sensibility and plain old musical chops. Polka usually begins with some combination of accordion, clarinet or trumpet, bass and drums, but Brave Combo adds or subtracts instruments—keyboards, brass, woodwind, percussion and strings—to make the sound their own.
