Jerry Mytych
In 1975, Jerry got together with some top Chicago musicians to form the Chicago Sound. Although this group’s life was short-lived they released six songs on Chicago Polka Records including “Uptown Saturday Nite” which was later a USPA award-winning song for The Sounds from Pittsburgh. The late-70’s brought Jerry to the “honky” side of polkas as he played and recorded three albums with Stas Golonka’s Chicago Masters. In 1980, after a short time with a group in the popular music field, Jerry joined a band that would again change polka music. He was an original member and emcee for the Lenny Gomulka’s Chicago Push and recorded their first LP, A Twelve Pack of Polkas. As a successful businessman with a growing family Jerry left the band and the traveling in 1981. In 1982 he formed his own band, the Chi-Town Express. With their up-tempo, honky style sound, the Chi-Town Express was immediately a hit on the Chicago-land polka scene. After some personnel changes and Jerry again picking up the trumpet, the Chi-Town Express became one of the more versatile bands playing the honky sounds of Li’l Wally and the ‘push’ styles of the Dynatones, Sounds and Krew Brothers. They recorded one LP under Jerry’s guidance, Introducing The Chi-Town Express. He would later make a cameo appearance on their next album, playing clarinet and saxophone on "Flloydds” Oberek. In the fall of 1989 Jerry received a phone call from the Ampol Aires who needed a clarinet/sax player as a temporary fill-in. In 1990, he joined the Goodtimes as they made a comeback into the polka field after many years playing only private functions. Through 1992, Jerry did all of the public and private work with the Goodtimes along with select local and all road jobs with the Ampol Aires. Until 1999, he provided the tenor saxophone for the Goodtimes as they resurrected the 1960’s sound of Chicago’s Naturals Orchestra.

Polka Soul From the 10th Anniversay booklet
Bill Czerniak and Polka Soul
was founded in the Spring of 1974 by Bill Czerniak, when he decided that he wanted to have more control of the style of music he was playing. Bill had always been a "side-man" to this point. Polka Soul's first job was a wedding in Morris, Minnesota, in May of 1974. Bill was joined by his wife, Mary Lou, Dean Totushek and Gordy Konerza on that first job. Soon after, Bill organized the original Polka Soul band. In addition to Mary Lou, Bill recruited his Brother-In-Law, Mike Nesgoda (drums and vocals), Al Hansen (trumpet, piano and vocals), Greg Wyman (trumpet and bass), and Jim Krikava (bass, Saxophone, clarinet, violin and vocals.) This first group was an instant success, relying heavily on the "Honky Style" drumming and Polish vocals by Mike. The youthfulness and enthusiasm of college students Al, Greg and Jim, made those first years a lot of fun. Polka Soul began to perform at many of the major Polka Festivals throughout the U.S. These included, Seven Springs, Pennsylvania; New London Connecticut; Erie Polka Days, and the International Polka Association Festival in Milwaukee. The uniqueness of Polka Soul, placed them in high demand at these festivals. The band used a liberal amount of "original" tunes, mixed in with traditional Polish numbers. Their first recording "Bill Czerniak and Polka Soul" showed this uniqueness, though it was not a great recording, from a technical standpoint.

But as members of that genre's vital community knows, it's deeply rooted music with a wide range of regional styles and fine musicianship. Twenty entertainers and other polka industry leaders met in Nashville on February 9 to try to find a way to change all that by forming a trade organization aimed at gaining national media attention and overcoming obstacles that include polka's negative, un-hip image, lack of industry assessment systems, ethnic divisions within the music, lack of activity in the youth market, and finding new marketing and distribution vehicles. As the organization is still in its beginning stages, we'll let you know more as it grows. Advertisement

Benedict Anderson argues in Imagined Communities that a nation is "imagined" because: "the members of even the smallest nations will never know most of their fellow members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives an image of their community" (6). At the dawn of the age of mechanical reproduction, the colonial nations of the Americas imagined their community primarily through the census, the map, and the museum. The dawn of nationalism also involved imagining communities through administrative organizations, language, religion, novels and newspapers, and mythology. Continue article Advertisement
Determining how well polka CDs sell is no easy task. According to Ron Shaeffer of Cleveland-based label and distributor World Renowned Sounds, a good-selling album sells between 20,000 and 30,000 copies (Bessman "Monarchs"). Of course, a local band, or one that owns its own label and does its own distribution, may sell more or fewer pieces than this, and it will sell the majority of these from the bandstand. These relatively low sales figures represent one reason polka bands tend to release a large number of different recordings over the course of their career. (1)
