About
I Ramblings and Links I Regional and World Food The Polka is ubiquitous in Wisconsin and is by act of the Legislature the official state dance. A polka band is de rigeur at a Wisconsin wedding. Many small towns feature a polka dance on Sunday afternoons in places like the volunteer fireman's hall. A polka band typically has a fellow playing an accordion or concertina, a drummer; and sometimes horn or reed players, a banjo strummer, or an electric guitar. And then there's the tuba question - an old German-American friend of mine says "If there ain't a tuba, it ain't polka". Unfortunately for Willie, there doesn't seem to be as many tuba players as polka bands. Polka couples circle the dance floor, often at seemingly break-neck speed, using a simple step, close, step, and hop technique. One of the most popular versions of the polka, because it is easy, is the "heel and toe and away we go". The music is in 2/4 time with a strong upbeat. Probably the most recognizable polka tune is "The Beer Barrel Polka," which was originally a massive hit in Europe in 1935 for accordionist/band leader Will Glahe. It became the most played record on jukeboxes across the U.S. In May 1939, "The Beer Barrel Polka" was recorded by the Andrews Sisters. Within months sales exceeded 350,000. Today, in Wisconsin, if you're walking across a room with a handful of beers, and the jukebox or band strikes up "The Beer Barrel Polka", watch out, or you'll be bowled over by raucous polkamaniacs hopping and spinning across the room.

His involvement in polka music began with the Dick Rodgers band in the 50's, although he's probably best remembered in the polka circuit as Louis Bashell's bass and tuba player during the 1970's and 80's. Jim also played regularly in the dixieland jazz and big band circuits. He was a member of Don Nedobeck's North Water Street Tavern Band for many years, and also performed with, among others, the Jack Morgan Orchestra and the Air Command Orchestra. Polka: Wisconsin's State Dance

by Richard March
The 19th-century European immigrants to Wisconsin arrived with polkas ringing in their ears. The polka, a lively couples dance in 2/4 time, had developed from folk roots and became a European popular dance craze in the 1840s.
In elite Paris salons and in humble village squares and taverns, polka dancers flaunted their defiance of the staid dance forms, the minuets and quadrilles, which had preceded this raucous and, for the times, scandalous new dance.
The political and social upheavals that coincided with the polka craze also launched thousands of European villagers on their hazardous migration to the American Midwest. They became farmers, miners, lumberjacks, factory workers, and entrepreneurs and continued to enjoy the music and dance traditions of their homelands, passing them on to the American-born generations.
Concurrent with the emergence of the polka was the booming popularity of brass bands and the invention of a variety of squeeze boxes - accordions and concertinas. Innovative tinkerers in France, England, and Germany developed a new family of instruments based on the principles of the sheng (a Chinese free reed instrument) but using the levers and springs of the Machine Age. Like the electronic keyboard in the late 20th century, the squeeze box was the 19th-century's most popular mechanical instrumental innovation. A single musician could replace a small ensemble, playing melodies and harmonies with the right hand while producing rhythmic chords and bass notes with the left. The prized possession in many an immigrant's pack was a button accordion or concertina, and that musician undoubtedly played a lot of polkas.

The View From Mrs. Sundberg's Window
In this feature, regular listener Mrs. Sundberg shares her thoughts about Saturday's show. October 04, 2004
Polka Music. Oh, Yah Listened to the show Saturday and it was not bad. It began with a polka, and you can't go wrong with a polka. You just can't. When I was young, every year about this time my grandparents came by and picked us up and took us out to the orchard or to a craft fair or to a pancake breakfast. One year they took us to the Legion Hall for Oktoberfest. We ate pork sausage (" Von Schwein ," Grandpa called it) and sauerbraten with red cabbage and bread dumplings. We ate and ate. And when our plates were cleared, Grandpa ordered another beer and so did Grandma. My brothers and I had to ask for dessert by name. Nachspeisen
They're the grandparents who taught us how to make blood sausage, and how to pluck a chicken.
He showed us how to paint, and one year made statues of Chief Seattle for my brothers and a purple cradle for my dolls. She taught us how to fry side pork and when tomatoes are really ripe, and the proper way to mix up a batch of Lape cookies. They lived in a little brown brick house where we went for most holidays. The windows were always steamed up and there was way too much food but nobody complained.

DT Morley, we have used music written and played by the Walt Wagner Polka Band. As polka music goes, would you say it s slow, fast or medium?
http://www.dancetutor.com/p-demo.asp
Polish-American Polka Demonstration (35 seconds) DT: Morley, we have used music written and played by the Walt Wagner Polka Band. As polka music goes, would you say it's slow, fast or medium? Morley: It’s slightly more than medium but not fast. DT: So half the music is faster and half slower. Morley: It depends on the band. Usually the band will play a similar tempo throughout the evening, and people know which bands play faster or slower and have their preferences based on that and other qualities. Monique: The tempos are not exactly the same but the range from slower to faster for each band is narrower than in other kinds of dance music, say like for swing bands for example. Swing bands might play some slow numbers and some very fast numbers, but polka bands play a narrower range of tempos. DT: Do you think that’s a deficiency in polka bands? Monique: Not for polka dancers because a lot of polka dancers will like ...for example there’s one polka band that is very popular and dancers like that band because they are consistent. Their music is predictable. They like to have something that is, you know, more or less the same speed, and they like it when the speed doesn’t change too much. Morley: Polka music is almost all live music. It’s rare that you would go to a dance that was DJ.

Music
Polka Time
Fritz's Polka Band urges "Give Polka Music a Chance"
By Russ Tarby
Fritz Scherz looks forward to playing polka music long into the 21st century. Like most 26-year-olds, the accomplished accordionist from Verona peppers his speech with terms such as "cool" and "awesome." He recently named his publishing company Fritzfraniac Music, a sobriquet more suggestive of maniacal rock than of oompah polka. And like many rock stars, when things get hot on stageas they did when Fritz's Polka Band played with Canadian Polka King Walt Ostanek at the Bill Flynn Polka Weekend in Ellenville, Pa., in 1994Scherz just shed his shirt and played his big accordion bare-chested. At 26, Fritz Scherz has already been performing the simple yet snappy music for 20 years, 18 of them as a professional. That's right, he got started when he was only 8. It's a family tradition. His dad, Fred Scherz Sr., traces his accordion-playing days back to 1945, when he was just 15. When Fritz was a kid, his dad ran a farm. "When he came in from the barn at night, dad would play his accordion," the younger Scherz recalls. "My mother and I used to listen to him play, and I really liked the instrument." In 1978, when he was 8, his dad made Fritz a full-time member of his polka band, and even named the group after the kid, looking forward to the day when Fritz would carry on the tradition. Father and son continue in that partnership, as they complement each other's accordion style: Fred handles most of the chording, bellows shakes and tremolo effects, while Fritz does most of the single-note lead work. They both play big black Excelsior brand accordions. "They're the sweetest sound in polka music," Fritz attests. In 1989, Fritz took top honors at the National Accordion Contest in Gibbon, Minn.
