182. Orwell: Politics And The English Language
An essay by George Orwell.
http://www.resort.com/~prime8/Orwell/patee.html
Politics and the English Language
M ost people who bother with the matter at all would admit that the English language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it. Our civilization is decadent and our language so the argument runs must inevitably share in the general collapse. It follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes. Underneath this lies the half-conscious belief that language is a natural growth and not an instrument which we shape for our own purposes. These five passages have not been picked out because they are especially bad I could have quoted far worse if I had chosen but because they illustrate various of the mental vices from which we now suffer. They are a little below the average, but are fairly representative examples. I number them so that I can refer back to them when necessary:
  • I am not, indeed, sure whether it is not true to say that the Milton who once seemed not unlike a seventeenth-century Shelley had not become, out of an experience ever more bitter in each year, more alien [sic] to the founder of that Jesuit sect which nothing could induce him to tolerate.

The Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy is a Harvard University research center dedicated to exploring the inter-section of press, politics and public policy in theory and practice. The Center strives to bridge the gap between journalists and scholars and, increasingly, between them and the public. Through teaching and research at the Kennedy School of Government and through its program of fellows and conferences, the Center is at the forefront of discussions in this area. Announcements On September 19th the Shorenstein Center kicked off its annual series of brown bag lunches with “A Conversation with Judy Woodruff,” moderated by Director Alex Jones. Context as ingredient and container...
In part 1 of my examination of "context" in journalism, I approached the question of what we mean by "context" from the point of view of the reader who may charge that a particular article lacks context. What do they mean when they say it? One answer is: The story journalism tells is always the story of the context (the rhetorical situation) of journalism. As long as it constructs, structures, and mediates the stories of others, those others will always feel their contexts have been lost or ignored. Cries for context, then, are cries to walk a mile in [another's] shoes (which, it seems to me, is impossible). To ask that journalists provide more context is to ask them to consider different narratives. And if they can "see" a standard narrative structure, and if that narrative is compelling based on their structural biases, then journalists will provide that "context"albeit appropriated by journalism for journalistic purposes.

Is Bush's big spending a bridge to nowhere?
by Peggy Noonan Town spending tends to be more effective than county spending. County spending tendstendsto be more efficacious than state spending. State spending tends to be more constructive than federal spending. This is how life works. The area closest to where the buck came from is most likely to be more careful with the buck. This is part of the reason conservatives are so disturbed by the gushing federal spigot.
Money is power. More money for the federal government and used by the federal government is more power for the federal government. Is this good? Is this what energy in the executive is"Here's a check"? Are the philosophical differences between the two major parties coming down, in terms of spending, to "Who's your daddy? He's not your daddy, I'm your daddy." Do we want this? Do our kids? Is it safe? Is it, in its own way, a national security issue?

The Press Release said in part: "The Government of Cameroun wishes to inform the national and international opinion that serious incidents occurred in the Bakassi Peninsula on Camerounian territory on 5, 17, 18 and 21 June 2005, following repeated acts of aggression by the Nigerian armed forces on Camerounian positions. These incidents caused the death of a Camerounian soldier, serious injuries and material damage. This constitutes a flagrant violation of the 10 October 2002 ruling of the International Court of Justice, which recognizes the Bakassi Peninsula as Camerounian territory." Sep 24, 2005, 06:39
