Grant was the military hero of America's Civil War. He led Union troops of the North to victory over Confederate troops of the South. Grant was extremely popular. It's all Pakeha's fault
A book co-authored by the chairman of the Kotahitanga Community Trust , a taxpayer-funded charitable organisation, claims the following: * The health system is racist and opposes activities like smoking and eating fatty foods simply because Maori enjoy them. * Calls for taxpayers to provide Maori with pills to prevent illnesses like diabetes and heart disease instead of expecting Maori to stop smoking or start dieting and exercising. * labels as "house niggers" and "Uncle Toms" Maori who disagree with them. * says cervical screening "contravenes significant cultural norms" and has been imposed on Maori by Pakeha. * claims Maori babies do not benefit from routine childhood vaccination against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and polio "Anti-gambling research is rubbish. It can be seen as just another example of the health Nazis looking to extend their empire," the book says. The Trust received around $300,000 of Government funding last year. And while the taxpayer did not fund this book directly, you do have to wonder whether an organisation with such extreme views is actually helping health outcomes at all.

- It's been a while since the last update, but time is scarce at the moment, so allow me to be brief until further notice: I, along with my little operation, have moved to the Manayunk neighborhood of Philadelphia. I abandoned my dependence on fossil fuel and now rely on bicycle, foot, skateboard and public forms of transportation. As of Monday my six year hiatus from Temple University is over. I feel a bit old in my classes, but fortunately I don't look it. I'll try to "blog" a more detailed description of what's going on sometime soon. I do want to say thanks the Cycle Messenger World Championships for allowing me to make the 40-some banners for the event. I'm grateful for their support, and I will continue to support the bike messenger industry/culture whenever I can! WELCOME Wonka Vision readers! Find that coupon and tell me you want to use it (don't go cuttin' up the pretty page). I'll have more comments when I get to actually read the article! -vince-

General contradicted his sworn testimony on Pentagon, Abu Ghraib
BY STEPHEN J. HEDGES
Chicago Tribune
WASHINGTON
(KRT) - An Army general who has been criticized for his role in the treatment of prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention center and Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq has contradicted his sworn congressional testimony about contacts with senior Pentagon officials. Gen. Geoffrey Miller told the Senate Armed Services Committee in May 2004 that he had only filed a report on a recent visit to Abu Ghraib, and did not talk to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld or his top aides about the fact-finding trip. But in a recorded statement to attorneys three months later, Miller said he gave two of Rumsfeld's most senior aides - then-Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and Undersecretary for Intelligence Steve Cambone - a briefing on his visit and his subsequent recommendations.

Aristotle's Political Theory
Aristotle (b. 384 - d. 322 BC), was a Greek philosopher, logician, and scientist. Along with his teacher Plato, Aristotle is generally regarded as one of the most influential ancient thinkers in a number of philosophical fields, including political theory. Aristotle was born in Stagira in northern Greece, and his father was a court physician to the king of Macedon. As a young man he studied in Plato's Academy in Athens. After Plato's death he left Athens to conduct philosophical and biological research in Asia Minor and Lesbos, and he was then invited by King Philip II of Macedon to tutor his young son, Alexander the Great. Soon after Alexander succeeded his father, consolidated the conquest of the Greek city-states, and launched the invasion of the Persian Empire. Aristotle returned as a resident alien to Athens, and was close friend of Antipater the Macedonian viceroy. At this time (335-323 BC) he wrote or at least completed some of his major treatises, including the Politics . When Alexander died suddenly, Aristotle had to flee from Athens because of his Macedonian connections, and he died soon after. Aristotle's life seems to have influenced his political thought in various ways: his interest in biology seems to be expressed in the naturalism of his politics; his interest in comparative politics and his sympathies for democracy as well as monarchy may have been encouraged by his travels and experience of diverse political systems; he criticizes harshly, while borrowing extensively, from Plato's
