Welcome!
Our faculty are national leaders in their fields of expertise; they are also among USC's most distinguished teachers and mentors. We cover such traditional areas of study as American Politics, Comparative Politics, Law and Courts, Political Theory, and International Relations, but our faculty also have expertise in exciting new areas such as Human Rights, Race/Ethnic Politics, Urban Politics, Political Communication, Civic Engagement, Political Behavior/Psychology, and Environmental Politics.
Political Science attracts students who have a wide range of intellectual interests-including philosophy, law, economics, history, culture, psychology, regional studies-but who also have an abiding desire to better understand the vital questions associated with politics and government, including the conditions that promote (or inhibit) democracy, freedom, justice, human rights, effective policymaking, and public service. Students in our program learn that the study of politics can be rigorous and systematic rather than merely ideological. They master classic works and engage contemporary questions in an academic setting that is lively and intellectually diverse. For undergraduates a degree in Political Science ensures all of the benefits of a great liberal arts education (including the development of essential analytic and expressive skills) but also provides an excellent background for graduate study and careers in politics, law, administration, and business.

Scope and Methods
Welcome to the course website for Political Science 242: Introduction to Political Science - Scope and Methods. The course is divided into three sections: epistemology, methodology, and theory. In the first section we will be examining the nature of political science and asking ourselves, "How do we know what we think we know?" Next, we will be looking at some of the quantitative methods that political scientists use to support their hypotheses. This methodology part of the class will use some basic statistical interpretation and application. Finally, in the theory section we will look at a variety of conceptual tools that political scientists use to make sense of politics. A quantitative research report is a significant part of this course. You will be using Stata 8.0, a leading statistical software program used by many top graduate schools and professional organizations, to analyze data relevant to your own unique hypothesis. PFS Film Review
After Nazi Germany attacked Poland in 1939, the Soviet Union demanded military bases from Finland. Helsinki refused, whereupon the Red Army attacked Finland in November 1939 in what is known as the Winter War. Using skis, the Finnish army held back the Soviets for several months but ultimately surrendered, signing a treaty of peace in March 1940 that gave up Eastern Karelia, whereupon some 420,000 Karelians fled to western Finland. In 1941 Finland allied with Germany, and while the Reischswehr invaded the Soviet Union, Finland advanced in midsummer 1941 to recover the territory previously lost in Eastern Karelia. Ambush We Were Brothers Ambush is almost an antiwar film, demonstrating through the conflict between Lukkari and Saarinen the way in which war can turn young men into savages, separating those who are mentally ill equipped from those who become obsessively vicious, with most somewhere on the scale between. The film is based on
