Blogs: New Medium, Old Politics
NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2004
(Photo: CBS/AP)
"People are pretty smart in assuming that if a blog is making a case on one side that it’s partisan. The problem is when a blog pretends to hold neutrality but is actually partisan."
Kathleen Jamieson
(CBS) By David Paul Kuhn,
CBSNews.com chief political writer

Internet blogs are providing a new and unregulated medium for politically motivated attacks. With the same First Amendment protections as newspapers, blogs are increasingly gaining influence. While many are must-reads for political junkies, are some Internet blogs also being used as proxies for campaigns? In the nation’s hottest Senate race, this past year, the answer was yes. Little over a month ago, the first Senate party leader in 52 years was ousted when South Dakota Republican John Thune defeated top Senate Democrat Tom Daschle. While more than $40 million was spent in the race, saturating the airwaves with advertising, a potentially more intriguing front was also opened. The two leading South Dakota blogs – websites full of informal analysis, opinions and links – were authored by paid advisers to Thune’s campaign.

As Gene Sees It
Many readers might think that I am old-fashioned and they might be correct. First of all I do not believe in changing things just for the sake of changing things. Departing from tried and true ways just to suit a current whim seems stupid to me. Secondly, in trying to deal with matters of concern in our society, we have lost our grip on logic and common sense. We have a great propensity for looking in the wrong places for the solutions that we seek. The solutions are there if we have the good sense and courage to look in the right places. Many of our efforts in seeking solutions are such that we appear to be trying to reinvent the wheel. And this is a waste of time and effort.
"The old parties are husks, with no real soul within either. Divided on artificial lines, boss-ridden and privilege-controlled, each a jumble of incongruous elements, and neither daring to speak out wisely and fearlessly on what should be said on the vital issues of the day." After eighty-eight years, has anything changed? We, the citizens of this nation, seem to be slow learners.
I have traveled much of the world and lived and worked in many foreign countries. My travelling experiences have greatly increased my appreciation for my American birthright. Also the experiences have greatly increased my respect and appreciation for the citizens of other countries. I understand that they can feel just as strongly about their birthright as I do mine.

163. Wisconsin's War On Parents
Prospanking political activism by people concerned that parents' rights to use non-abusive spanking are being infringed by government.
http://www.geocities.com/cp_prosecutions/
Wisconsin's War on Parents Over the past decade, the State of Wisconsin has become a national leader in frivolous child abuse charges against parents.
In 1996, Mark Peterson of Appleton was sentenced to a year in jail for giving no more than 6 swats to his stepdaughter with his open hand.
In 1998, the Faith Temple Church in Milwaukee was targeted by the Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS) because of some public spankings administered to misbehaving kids in church.
In 2001 Derek Wixforth and Kay Henson were intimidated into accepting unfavorable plea bargains by unprincipled prosecutors.
In September, 2001, a man from Ottawa was charged with child abuse for giving his stepson a spanking with a belt. (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Sep. 20, 2001)
And just this week (November 5, 2001) Nathaniel Washington of Janesville was charged with child abuse, also for disciplining his son with a belt. (Janesville Gazette, Nov. 6, 2001)
Those are only a few of the outrages that have occurred in the War on Parents. There was also Darrell Vance of Beloit; Harold Luettgen of Waukesha; James Clary of Viroqua; and others victimized by the fanatically anti-spanking DHFS.
It needs to be said (and cannot be repeated too often): A RED BUTT OR A BRUISED BUTT FROM A DESERVED SPANKING IS NOT CHILD ABUSE IN ANY SANE JURISDICTION. Unfortunately, in Wisconsin it appears that the lunatics are running the asylum.

Rita Downgraded to Category 3, Still Dangerous
(CNSNews.com) -
Hurricane Rita has been downgraded to a Category 3 with winds of 125 miles an hour, but the storm is still considered to be dangerous when it comes ashore, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. As of 2pm Eastern time, Reuters reports that the eye of the storm was centered 190 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas and 175 miles southeast of Port Arthur. The storm is expected to move northwestward with the core of the hurricane reaching the coasts of southwestern Louisiana and northern Texas by 1am Saturday. The weather models show the hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast near the Texas-Louisiana border.
New Orleans Flooding Again; Tornado Watch
(CNSNews.com)
- It's raining in New Orleans, and Fox News reported that water is once again gushing into the city's 9th Ward - the worst possible news for the flood-damaged city. And on Friday morning, tornado watches were posted for the coastal area including New Orleans. Hurricane Rita's approaching storm surge - which could be up to 5 feet - is another potential disaster in the making for the city's weakened levees. The storm sent water through breaches in the levee into the 9th Ward, one of New Orleans' poorest areas where most of its homes have been destroyed. "Our worst fears came true," the Associated Press reports Maj. Barry Guidry of the Georgia National Guard as saying. "We have three significant breaches in the levee and the water is rising rapidly," Guidry said. "At daybreak I found substantial breaks and they've grown larger," he said.
