Democrats for Roberts, and the Contrast Principle
by RonK Seattle
Sat Sep 24th, 2005 at 22:10:26 PDT
Great analysis by RonK. While I don't know whether I agree with his details or not I'm undecided he's right that it's all about the second justice. And whether the Roberts' strategy was a success or failure can't be determined until we see what happens with the second nominee. It's a two-part act. Part One is complete, and many are unhappy. But none of us know how this story ends. Ultimately, who the second justice becomes will determine whether Feingold, Leahy, and the rest of the Dems that will vote "yes" did the right thing or not. kos [Crossposted from The Next Hurrah ... with sincere regards to Armando Agonistes.] If you always smile, nobody will know when you're happy. Always frown, and nobody knows when you're sad. And if you shout all the time, how will anybody know when you're really outraged? Judge Roberts will soon be confirmed as Chief Justice, with many Democratic 'Aye' votes ... and so there is wailing and gnashing of teeth and rending of garments in progressive quarters. Are our frantic exhortations all for naught? Are our party leaders utterly lacking in brains, or hearts, or spines, or testicles, or situational awareness, or moral compasses? Are they lost in the beltway bubble? Have they sold us out? Is there no hope?

From FoxNews: GOPers Fear Huge Katrina Costs Rep. Roscoe Bartlett of Maryland joined other House Republicans Wednesday in proposing $500 billion in spending cuts to pay for Hurricane Katrina relief and reconstruction efforts. At a news conference Wednesday, the Republican Study Committee launched "Operation Offset," a detailed list of proposed budget savings options so that the reconstruction costs of Katrina, estimated at upwards of $200 billion, will not be passed onto future generations in the form of unmanageable debt. ... The 20 House Republicans at the news conference highlighted programs that could be either eliminated or reduced. Among the savings options were delaying prescription drug benefits and increasing premiums under Medicare, increasing co-payments for Medicaid and limiting grants for first responders to large, at-risk communities. This site provides information, support, and resources for those looking for alternatives to traditional employment. We actively promote alternatives to the wage slavery mindset and what we call " The Cult of the Job " which automatically equates having a job with making a living. If you start asking yourself "why work?" you may see a connection between wage slavery , misunderstandings of leisure , lifestyles based on consumption, corporate welfare education that often amounts to little more than conditioning, and the global social, environmental, and economic crises we are now facing. We hope that the materials we feature here will encourage critical thinking about such things. This site is primarily about

William Godwin was born at Wisbech in 1756. After three years at day school and three years with a private tutor in Norwich , Godwin entered Hoxton Presbyterian College. Godwin left college as a Tory but after five years as a minister he had developed radical political views. While he was a minister in Beaconsfield William Godwin became friendly with the Rational Dissenters, Richard Price and Joseph Priestley
In 1787 Godwin left the ministry and became a full-time writer. Inspired by the writings of Tom Paine , Godwin published Enquiry into Political Justice in 1793. In the book Godwin argued that as long as people acted rationally, they could live without laws or institutions. The following year Godwin's pioneering novel, The Adventures of Caleb Williams , was published.

Yevgheniy Zamyatin Blogroll ScrappleFace Powered by Movable Type 2.63 September 24, 2005 Amber Alert Issued for Missing Bush Swagger by Scott Ott (2005-09-24) The White House today issued an 'Amber Alert' in hopes of finding President George Bush's missing swagger. The Washington Post broke the news of the swagger loss, citing reports by potential Republican presidential candidates, pundits and anonymous White House sources. Experts credit the swagger with almost single-handedly achieving a series of political victories during Mr. Bush's first term. However, recent troubles with public opinion about Iraq, Social Security and the federal response to Hurricane Katrina all provide evidence that the swagger either has been misplaced or, possibly, has escaped. The Justice Department announced a nationwide campaign to locate the straying swagger, including the printing of millions of milk cartons bearing a photo of President Bush in a flight suit on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, in a news conference today, encouraged the public to help in the search.

74. A Few Key Bits Of Bi Politics
Article about the differences and samenesses of repression and discrimination of gay and lesbian people versus bisexual people.
http://www.uncharted-worlds.org/bi/bipol.htm
A few key political issues for bi people
1 Homophobia
a) It's often naïvely assumed that homophobia affects bi people only when they are in same-sex relationships. This is equivalent to suggesting that homophobia has no effect on lesbians or gay men who aren't currently in relationships. It denies the effect of being surrounded by a culture that often would prefer that you didn't exist. Bi people are just as likely as gay people to suffer from low self-esteem, internalised homophobia, and fear of the consequences of expressing their sexuality. b) Bisexuals who end up living monogamously with an other-sex partner do to some degree escape the most dangerous or oppressive consequences of homophobia. This is sometimes suggested as the "easy way out". It does however depend on falling in love with someone of "the right sex". Bi people still have a good chance of being under homophobic pressure to deny their feelings for someone they're in love with.
Even while in an other-sex relationship, bi people may be hassled for looking gay on the street, or for taking part in gay activism or obviously queer social events. In many respects they still have to make choices about "how far out to be" that are similar to the choices gay and lesbian people face.

Stop the BullyingYou can get help. You can help.
The poet Shelley was teased and taunted as a boy; they called him "Mad Shelley;" he stood up against the established system of hazing young students, and he was pinched, his clothes were torn, he was hit with mudballs and his textbook was thrown into the mud. In "Look Homeward Angel," Thomas Wolfe describes the suffering he endured because of his height and ill-fitting clothes. Such childhood harassment produces emotional damage that lasts a lifetime.
These were idyllic moments compared to the bullying of schoolchildren today, which often includes kicks, punches, theft, death threats and even rape as both girls and boys are targets of abuse. Occaisionally children have died later from injuries sustained at school, and many youngsters have committed suicide because they saw no other way out of being the target of a bully. The National Association of School Psychologists reports that MORE THAN 160,000 CHILDREN SKIP SCHOOL EACH DAY BECAUSE OF BULLYING.
Individuals, community service groups and governments around the world are now struggling to offer assistance and solutions to the problem, and to enact legislation that will enable victims of bullying and their parents to get help.
