President's Remarks

11:17 A.M. EST THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all. Please be seated. Yesterday I pledged to reach out to the whole nation, and today I'm proving that I'm willing to reach out to everybody by including the White House press corps. This week the voters of America set the direction of our nation for the next four years. I'm honored by the support of my fellow citizens, and I'm ready for the job. We are fighting a continuing war on terror, and every American has a stake in the outcome of this war. Republicans, Democrats and independents all love our country, and together we'll protect the American people. We will preserve we will persevere until the enemy is defeated. We will stay strong and resolute. We have a duty, a solemn duty to protect the American people, and we will. Every civilized country also has a stake in the outcome of this war. Whatever our past disagreements, we share a common enemy. And we have common duties: to protect our peoples, to confront disease and hunger and poverty in troubled regions of the world. I'll continue to reach out to our friends and allies, our partners in the EU and NATO, to promote development and progress, to defeat the terrorists and to encourage freedom and democracy as alternatives to tyranny and terror.

Comedic Genius

Posted by Seth on August 11th, 2005 @ 10:30 PM Do you want to know one of the simplest and yet most difficult comedic techniques in the world? We'll tell you: It's the pause.
Often what's not said, or the spaces between what is said, is the most important thing. Consider Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the witch trial scene. "She turned me into a newt!"
"A newt?"
"... ... ... ... ... ... I got better."
When people quote this exchange, they almost invariably leave out the pause, hence ruining the joke. If they do pause, they pause for a mere second, which is just not enough. The bigger pause makes the bigger funny.
So do you want to know why Lex hasn't posted here in months? Because he's a comedic genius.

The Union of Nova Scotia Indians is a tribal organization which has been in existence in Nova Scotia for 30 years. It held its first meeting July 12, 1969 and ratifed its constitution on Sept. 13, 1969 during its first annual general assembly. It was formally incorporated under the Nova Scotia's Societies' Act on July 3, 1970. The organization came into existence to provide a unified political voice for the Mi'kmaq people of the province in the face of a proposed federal government policy to assimilate Canada's First Nations people into mainstream society. The 1969 White Paper was widely viewed by the First Nations' leadership as the government's deliberate attempt to introduce a policy of cultural and political genocide. Faced with the prospect of extinction, a group of Mi'kmaq leaders formed the Union of Nova Scotia Indians to provide political leadership for the Mi'kmaq Nation. The Union of Nova Scotia Indians operates under its original terms of the Memorandum of Association that was registered in 1970 and its present By-Law which was adopted in July 1992 and amended during its 28th annual assembly held in Waycobah in July 1997. The objectives of the Union of Nova Scotia Indians are as follows
  • To promote the welfare and well-being of the Indians of Nova Scotia To improve the economic and social conditions of the Indians of Nova Scotia

Future Borgias of America
The New Republic's Franklin Foer reports from this summer's skullduggery-laden College Republican Convention, which elected a South Dakota kid named Paul Gourley, a self-professed "hick" as its new chair. The College Republicans are the great proving ground for made political operatives in the GOPpast presidents include Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, and Jack Abramoff. Foer says his favorite dirty trick involves a plainly forged fax that created a slate of dubiously legitimate Missouri delegates. But for our money, it's hard to beat this one, courtesy of the aw-shucks "hick" Gourley: At last, we're beginning to see what they mean by "compassionate conservatism." Perhaps mindful of its own coming reckoning with flat circulation figures, the WaPo juggernaut dispatches Ariana Eunjung Cha to nail the story of how these fancypants "celebrity magazines" keep raking in the readers and ad bucks. Cha delivers the goods, in a singularly rapt account of an Us Weekly photo meeting: Around 7:15 p.m., [Peter] Grossman, 30, a music education graduate student turned photo editor, came in bringing more shotsincluding one that showed [Brad] Pitt's and [Pitt's adopted daughter] Zahara's faces, but extremely blurred. On the other hand, the agreement isn't a guaranteed failure like the "Agreed Framework" President Clinton reached with the North Koreans. The reason, as Charles Krauthammer has pointed out, is the involvement of China, the one nation that can probably coerce North Korea into complying with the agreement, if it chooses to do so.

(CNN) On the eve of President Bush's inauguration, a poll shows the nation is split over whether he has united or divided the nation, but a majority believe his inauguration festivities should be toned down because of the war. During the 2000 campaign, Bush promised to be a "uniter, not a divider." Forty-nine percent of 1,007 adult Americans said in phone interviews they believe Bush is a "uniter," according to the CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Wednesday. Another 49 percent called him a "divider," and 2 percent had no opinion. The results nearly match those of a poll taken in October 2004, which showed 48 percent considered Bush a "uniter" and 48 percent called him a "divider," with 4 percent having no opinion. (

Flag adopted
3 January 1974, coat of arms adopted 1974. A red flag with a blue canton and a white emblem in it. The emblem consists of a cog wheel and a paddy ear surrounded with 14 five-pointed stars. Most vexillological sources give the ratio as 5:9 if I am not mistaken. Some show a 2:3 ratio (e.g., Crampton (1990f) or 6:11. I think that the ratio is not prescribed. In any case, it seems that the canton is somewhat higher than half the hoist, whereas the length is less than half the fly. I doubt that there are official specifications.
, 30 June 2002 The Myanmar flag is displayed with fair frequency by the government, particularly around major intersections of larger towns. Myanmar flags can be seen flying over private establishments, but it's somewhat rare. Cost is not a factor though. Virtually all the flags I saw in Myanmar were made of broad cloth with the canton being printed. However, some of these flags were rather large. In Yangon, I saw 2 flags measuring roughly 8 x 12 ft.
Clay Moss , 7 July 2001 See also:
2:3 and 6:11 Variants of the National Flag
Meaning of the flag
The flag was adopted on 3 January 1974, the year when Burma became the Socialist Republic of the Burmese Federation. Since then the state has changed its name, but not its flag. The fourteen stars are for 14 states, the cog wheel and rice are for industry and agriculture.
