The "blogosphere" isn't so much an alternative to the conventional newsstand as it is a massive extension of it. There are well-edited, well-researched, well-written blogs and there are poorly edited, poorly written, gossip-driven blogs, just as your roadside newsstand carries publications ranging from The Economist to the Weekly World News. There are scholarly, erudite blogs and there are blogs that rant and screech. Your newsstand likely carries opinion journals ranging from Dissent on the far left to Policy Review or National Review on the right. The blogosphere extends those extremes on either end, and leaves few gaps in between. Some of it is insightful and articulate. Some of it represents original, undiscovered talent. Much of it, unfortunately, is garbage. Just as the newsstand isn't exclusively political, neither is the blogosphere. Up until just a few years ago, most blogs weren't political at all but were tech sites run by computer geeks or online diaries produced by teenage girls.

Paperback – 382 pages (September 1999) At the turn of the century, the United States is on the verge of losing its vote in the General Assembly for non-payment of its arrears. There are eerie parallels between the domestic debate over the United Nations in 1999 and the struggles over the League of Nations in 1919. Why, many ask, are Americans the first to create international organizations and the first to abandon them? What is it about the American political culture that breeds both the most ardent supporters and the most vocal detractors of international organization? And why can't they find any common ground? In seeking to uncover the roots of American ambivalence toward international organization, this political history presents the first major analysis of U.S. attitudes toward both the United Nations and the League of Nations. It traces eight themes that have resurfaced again and again in congressional and public debates over the course of this century: exceptionalism, sovereignty, nativism and racism, unilateralism, security, commitments, reform, and burden-sharing. It assesses recent domestic political trends and calls for the development of two interactive political compactsone domestic and one internationalto place U.S.-UN relations on a new footing.

Pros
The best in political thinking on the newsstand Cons Virginia Postrel is leaving! Full Review Reason magazine is the most thought-provoking magazine there is. Forget Time, Newsweek etc etc they pander only to the most popular interests and opinions. Reason is by far the most honest magazine in the political arena. Thought-provoking, honest and courageous ! Reason names names of the people they accuse of dragging our society backwards. What has always been the biggest draw to Reason for me is the monthly column by Editor-In-Chief Virginia Postrel. Her wisdom and erudition easily out-shine anything Lewis H Lapham (Harper's) or Wm F Buckley Jr (National Review) ever wrote! She is also the author of "The Future and its Enemies". You are hereby invited to read my Epinion of this must-read book! Alas, Postrel has resigned as EIC after 10 years in order to write full-time. I am positive that Reason will continue to be the great magazine it has always been under new EIC Nick Gillespie. The change takes effect with the April 2000 issue.
