Another Prestigious Honor Society at Ferrum College
On Friday, April 16, 2004, a chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha (the National Political Science Honor Society) was established at Ferrum College. Pi Sigma Alpha was founded in 1920 at the University of Texas in Austin for graduate and undergraduate students in political science, international studies and public administration. To bring a chapter of this prestigious honor society to our campus, the Department of Political Science had to tender a formal petition to the national office in Washington, DC. After this initial stage of the approval process, Ferrum College was invited to send the names of its initiates.
The national office officially approved our application and authorized the establishment of the Alpha Beta Pi chapter on our campus. The Political Science Department with the support of Student Government Association, President’s Office, Division of History, Political Science and the Arts, and the Office of Student Activities organized an initiation ritual in the Founders Room of the Library Annex. The ceremony was officiated by Dr. Edward Lynch, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Political Science at Hollins University. Dr. Lynch reminded the audience of the importance and value of politics and government. He acknowledged the academic accomplishment of the students and encouraged them to appreciate the responsibility that comes with such recognition.

French papers bemoan the EU vote, and newsstand vendors go on strike.

PARIS—Shortly before French voters solidly trounced the EU constitution in Sunday's national referendum, there was a joke doing the rounds of the capital. A Frenchman thrusts his fist in the air and shouts defiantly, "I'm voting non !" Then after a pause he asks, "What was the question again?" On Monday, French newspaper editors tried to remind the voters what exactly they had said " non " to and how serious the political fallout might be for one of the European Union's founding fathers. France's conservative daily Le Figaro —the closest thing President Jacques Chirac had to a mouthpiece during the referendum campaign—underscored just how seismic the political jolt was by splashing color across its typically sober monochrome front page. With the blue EU flag sprawled across Page One, the giant headline read simply: " NON ." That word, at least, was no surprise. At least 10 polls before Sunday's vote had showed that the French were determined to snub Chirac, who had spent weeks making incoherent, belated pleas asking voters to support the 450-page constitution.

The United States and its allies are fighting a networked, global insurgency led by extremist Muslims, he said. The insurgent leaders do not speak for all of Islam, but they threaten to hijack the religion for their own purposes, he said. The United States needs to be on the side of moderate Islam and avoid being set up as an enemy of Islam, he said. A new class of regional and global actors have linked these movements in a global network of ideology, financiers, document forgers, transportation experts and propagandists, he said. This includes al Qaeda, Jemaah Islamiyah and other affiliated theater movements, he said. Winning the war will require more than just victory on the battlefield, he said. Reaching out to populations in need before they become insurgents is very important, he argued.
