Polio On this page Polio is an ancient scourge that became vaccine-preventable in the 1950's. Transmission of wild-virus polio stopped in the Western hemisphere from July 1991 to July 12, 2000, when the disease erupted again in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, places where coverage with three doses of oral polio vaccine was low.
When symptomatic, polio causes paralysis of the muscles. Most people never completely recover. Luckily, however, up to 95% of all polio infections occur without symptoms. Infected persons without symptoms shed viruses in the stool, and are thus able to spread the virus to others. Childhood immunization is recommended. More info/links The CDC fact sheet answers some common questions about polio.
Disease reporting Health care providers and clinical laboratories are required by law to report cases and suspect cases of polio to local health departments within 24 hours of identification. On weekends and holidays, call 503/731-4030 to reach the state health department doctor on call.

Fighting polio with "gentle hands"

(Photo courtesy of Margaret Opdahl Ernest) Fifty-six years ago this month, the Minnesota State Fair was cancelled. The reason was polio. Health officials worried large gatherings helped spread the disease. Polio was crippling thousands and there was no known cure or prevention. Throughout the l940s and early '50s, polio struck 15,000 Minnesotans - 900 died. Those who survived were consigned to a life with metal braces, crutches and deformed limbs. Then Elizabeth Kenny arrived. The single-minded, self-taught nurse from Australia brought to Minnesota a treatment that got paralyzed polio victims up and walking.

The WHO wants to vaccinate 74m children over the next year Africa could be on the verge of a major polio outbreak, the World Health Organization has warned.
Mali and Guinea have reported their first cases of the disease in five years. Three cases have also been reported in the Darfur region of Sudan. The WHO had previously predicted that polio could be eradicated by the end of this year. These latest cases are being blamed on problems vaccinating people in parts of Nigeria last year. Islamic clerics in Kano state condemned immunisation campaigns as an American plot to make Muslim women infertile. Unable to vaccinate in the region, the WHO tried to prevent polio spreading further by protecting people in neighbouring countries. This is an extremely important development
Bruce Aylward,
Global Polio Eradication Initiative However, Guinea and Mali were outside the ring of countries targeted by WHO and the United Nations Children's fund (UNICEF) in an immunisation campaign launched in February.

The authorities hope the disease will be eradicated A nationwide polio vaccination campaign has started in India as part of a World Health Organization initiative to eradicate the virus around the world.
More than 170 million Indian children under the age of five are being immunised over the next three days. Despite an epidemic in 2002, India - by vaccinating as many children as possible with multiple doses - looks likely to stop the spread next year. Another 80 million children are being vaccinated in 24 African countries. Future in doubt In the last campaign, about 90% of children were immunised and this time health care workers will be trying to reach those in remote areas. Click here for a map of countries affected by polio There is concern though about polio in the Ivory Coast - this year 15 children have been paralysed by the virus, and conflict there means that vaccinations have been postponed.

Polio and the era of fear
M illions of Americans had taken the Salk and Sabin anti-polio vaccines by 1962, and an era of fear ended. "Seeing polio go away was like witnessing a major miracle," said Malcolm C. Lancaster, MD, clinical professor of family practice Highly contagious, the poliovirus spread by contact with contaminated feces or oral secretions. Children were most vulnerable. The virus inflamed nerves in the brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis of the muscles in the chest, leg or arms in severe cases. In 1950, 33,300 people were stricken. Lacking a vaccine, the nation tried to halt the spread of polio by closing public pools and parks. Parents ordered their children not to drink from public water fountains. Schools canceled graduations as a precaution. The March of Dimes raised money for a cure. Few people who saw them can forget the organization's poster children adorable tots with braces and crutches who posed in fund-raising pictures. For all its pain and grief, polio's era of fear provided knowledge that is useful today and would have been invaluable back in the '50s. For example:

Nigeria Polio Warning Issued for Travel to Nigeria
By David Brown
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 1, 2004; Page A02 The World Health Organization warned travelers to northern Nigeria yesterday to get polio vaccine boosters because of "uncontrolled transmission of polio virus" in the region. The announcement comes as the region enters the season when polio transmission increases, typically rising five- to tenfold. There has been little or no polio immunization in Nigeria's northern states for more than a year because of rumors that the vaccine is a tool in a global plot to sterilize Muslims. WHO's warning, announced in Geneva, is purely advisory. The organization has no power to force the immunization of travelers, or even to monitor it. Nevertheless, the suggestion that visitors get a polio booster if they have not had one in four years further sounds the alarm that the outbreak in Nigeria presents an "extreme danger" and a "threat to every country," said David L. Heymann, a WHO physician helping lead the 16-year effort to eradicate polio.
