About PolioPlus
In 1985, Rotary launched the PolioPlus program to protect children worldwide from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world to eradicate polio. Since that time, Rotary's efforts and those of partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world, have achieved a 99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide.

The causative agent, a virus called poliovirus (PV), enters the body orally, infecting the intestinal lining . It may proceed to the blood stream and into the central nervous system causing muscle weakness and often paralysis. Eradication efforts led by the World Health Organization have reduced the number of annual diagnosed cases from the hundreds of thousands to around a thousand.

    What is polio?
Polio (infantile paralysis) is a communicable disease which is categorized as a disease of civilization. Polio spreads through human-to-human contact, usually entering the body through the mouth due to fecally contaminated water or food. The poliovirus is a small RNA ( ribonucleic acid ) virus that has three different strains and is extremely infectious. The virus invades the nervous system , and the onset of paralysis can occur in a matter of hours. While polio can strike a person at any age, over fifty percent of the cases occurred to children between the ages of three and five. The

Polio vaccine
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Two polio vaccines are used throughout the world to combat polio . The first was invented by Jonas Salk and first tested in and announced to the world by Salk on April 12 . It consists of an injected dose of killed polio virus . Thereafter, Albert Sabin produced an oral polio vaccine using live but weakened virus. Human trials of Sabin's vaccine began in and it was licensed in United States The major disadvantage of the live-virus vaccine is that it can itself cause polio, and does so in about one in 2.4 million recipients. There is no such risk from the killed-virus vaccine. In the United States , once polio was eradicated within its population, the Centers for Disease Control decided that the slight advantages of the live-virus vaccine were not worth several vaccine-induced cases of polio each year. The use of the live-virus vaccine was discontinued after 2000, but it is still used elsewhere where polio remains a common threat. The two vaccines have eliminated polio from most of the countries in the world and reduced early cases from hundreds of thousands per year to only 1000 worldwide in Initial attempts to develop a vaccine were hampered by the difficulty of obtaining enough of the virus. Growing it in the brains of

From the Lincolnshire postpolio library, an article from Dr Henry about bulbar polio involving the brain stem, where the centers for the cranial nerves are located.
http://www.zynet.co.uk/ott/polio/lincolnshire/library/drhenry/bulbar.html
Dr. Henry writes about Bulbar and spinal polio
Spinal polio involved damage to the anterior horn cells which run up and down the spinal cord. These cells control motor function only. Sensory cells in the spinal cord were spared, thus we all feel pain and touch. Paraplegics and quadraplegics do not have motor or sensory function below the level of their injury. Spinal polio could damage the muscles of breathing in the chest wall and thus spinal polio victims could also need the assistance of a ventilator or iron lung. Many people had both, spinal and bulbar combined. Actually, many victims that had bulbar alone and had good recoveries had good muscular function because their spinal cord was not involved. With PPS, many of these people are having swallowing and central fatigue problems or problems with any functions related to the cranial nerves (double vision for example). I hope I am explaining this adequately. Statistically, most of us had spinal polio, and most that had bulbar had it combined with spinal. But now we seem to be learning that many of us had brain involvement during the acute infection that did not do any recognizeable damage then, but may be giving us problems now with the total body fatigue or central fatigue of PPS. People who had only the GI form of polio which we had initially when we became ill (flu like) had the non-paralytic type of polio. The mystery now is whether these people may have had silent CNS involvement and are subject to PPS.

We were one of the first organisations of disabled people and have acted as a voice for people who have had polio for over half a century. We are democratically-run and governed by our Management Council, the majority of whom are people who have had polio themselves.
Information
We provide a wide range of information and advice on your rights, housing issues, equipment, Self-Management courses, the late effects of polio/post polio syndrome etc. The list is extensive and you will find a great deal of information here on the website. If you can't find the information you're looking for, please contact our helpful office team on 0800 0180586
The BPF works hard to ensure that the needs of polio-affected people are not overlooked. Independently and as members of numerous organisations we regularly make representations on behalf of members and respond to Government consultation papers.

Severe cases may cause permanent paralysis or death. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Poliomyelitis is a communicable disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Transmission of the virus occurs by direct person-to-person contact, by contact with infected secretions from the nose or mouth, or by contact with infected feces. The virus enters through the mouth and nose, multiplies in the throat and intestinal tract, and then is absorbed and spread through the blood and lymph system . Incubation (the time from being infected with the virus to developing symtoms of disease) ranges from 5 to 35 days (average 7 to 14 days). Risks include:
  • lack of immunization against polio travel to an area that has experienced a polio outbreak pregnancy; very old or very young age

mancata creazione di centri specialistici contrariamente a quanto avvenuto in altri paesi (Australia, Canada, Cina, Francia, Germania, India, Inghilterra, Irlanda, Israele, Nuova Zelanda, USA e altri).
