BellaOnline's Polish Culture Editor Unemployment in Poland, History Unemployment is one of the most serious problems in Polish social and economical life in a present time.
Changing of a political system did not improve this situation. It rather made it worse like it happens usually during a transition period. The unemployment during the last ten years oscillates around 18% in Poland. It is much higher than the average unemployment in Europe (10%). Poland is in a turning point. This week referendum, 7-8 June 2003, would decide whether Poland would join European Union or not. Please read about benefits or shortcomings of joining European Union and also about Polish-American relations in previous articles. Whatever the outcome will be, would definitively affect the structure and level of Polish unemployment. We hope, that whatever decision Poles would choose, it would rather help to overcome economical problems, also unemployment. google_ad_client = "pub-3620807445870244";google_ad_width = 468;google_ad_height = 60;google_ad_format = "468x60_as";google_ad_channel ="";google_color_border = "FFFFFF";google_color_bg = "FFFFFF";google_color_link = "FF6613";google_color_url = "FF6613";google_color_text = "000000";

BellaOnline's Polish Culture Editor Even a person who does not know too much about geography should hear at least about two Polish cities, Polish capital Warsaw and Kraków, a city with many historical objects and the previous residence of cardinal Wojtyla (now pope John Paul II). What is about these cities which makes them so different… Warsaw and Kraków – two main Polish cities look very different, have different history and different atmosphere. Kraków is full of history, old churches and narrow streets. In Kraków’s historic downtown (old city) everything is reachable in the walking distance. There are always crowds of people – residents and tourists on the streets. The town has a cozy atmosphere with many cafeterias and street musicians. Warsaw has a real metropolitan atmosphere with couple of skyscrapers, huge expensive hotels, big department stores in the very center, governmental buildings and wide streets. Warsaw has an old town, but this part of the city is not the real heart of the Warsaw. Probably for the average tourist from the USA Warsaw looks more like an American city than Krakow.

Poland - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Poland's history is a story of survival. Like few other nations on earth, the Polish people have kept a national identity through centuries of war, abuse, and slavery. The location of Poland in Eastern Europe has kept it in the middle of some of the greatest conflicts. Despite all it has been through, the nation of Poland is a free and vibrant country today.
The history of Poland dates back to the 10th century. It was then, in 966, that a ruler of a group of people called "Poliane" accepted Christianity as his religion and was recognized as a ruler by most of Europe. This ruler was Prince Mieszko, who became the first ruler of an official Polish state.
For the next hundred years, Mieszko and his ruling family the Piast dynasty conquered new lands for Poland. By the 12th century, this growth had stopped and Poland began having its first troubles. A split in the ruling family divided Poland, and it lost land to invading Mongols. Conflict with Germany to the west and Bohemia to the south cost Poland even more land. It was only at the end of the Piast dynasty, in the 14th century, that Poland regained strength through renewed friendship with the Germans and Bohemians. The last of the Piast dynasty, Kazimierz III, was responsible for this growth. He also founded Poland's first university in Krakow in 1364.

Poland's History
Retells The Dramas of Europe

A proud country with a history that dates back at least 1,100 years, Poland has outlived many of the powers that sought to absorb it. As both a nation rich in history and a former socialist state speedily preparing for EU accession, today's Poland is a place where modernity and tradition exist side by side. One of the largest of the countries of Eastern Europe, Poland was the first of these countries to liberate its government from the Communist domination it endured for 45 years. It was the relegalization of the trade union Solidarity and the agreement to hold partially free parliamentary elections that appeared to have opened the floodgates of radical reforms that spilled over into other countries of the Soviet bloc. In 1989, a year of drama unmatched in modern history, government after government collapsed in Eastern Europe and politically transformed not only Poland but also East Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, and the Soviet Union itself.
The Holy Roman Empire, Sweden, Prussia, Russia, and Austria all tried to expand at the expense of Poland. Though partitioning all but erased Poland from the map of Europe in the late 18th century, Napoleon created the Grand Duchy of Warsaw and later, the Congress of Vienna restored a Kingdom of Poland in 1815, with the Russian czar as monarch. From 1830 on, the Russian influence on Polish society intensified. Until recently, Russian was a required language in elementary school. At this time, Poland was home to the largest population of Jews in Europe. In 1939, Germany attacked Poland along with the Soviet Union. Divided between the two then-allies, Poland suffered great losses during the war. Nearly all Polish Jews, (estmated at 3 million) were sent to Nazi concentration camps, which were then erected all over Poland. A Polish government-in-exile was established in London, but its effectiveness was limited.

History
Poland Table of Contents THE POLES POSSESS one of the richest and most venerable historical traditions of all European peoples. Convention fixes the origins of Poland as a nation near the middle of the tenth century, contemporaneous with the Carolingians, Vikings, and Saracens, and a full hundred years before the Norman conquest of Britain in 1066. Throughout the subsequent centuries, the Poles managed despite great obstacles to build and maintain an unbroken cultural heritage. The same cannot be said of Polish statehood, which was notoriously precarious and episodic. Periods of independence and prosperity alternated with phases of foreign domination and disaster. Especially in more recent centuries, frequent adversity subjected the Poles to hardships scarcely equaled in European history. Many foreign observers perceive Poland as a perennial victim of history, whose survival through perseverance and a dogged sense of national identity has left a mixed legacy of indomitable courage and intolerance toward outsiders. To Poles, their history includes brighter recollections of Poland as a highly cultured kingdom, uniquely indulgent of ethnic and religious diversity and precociously supportive of human liberty and the fundamental values of Western civilization. The contrast between these images reflects the extremes of fortune experienced by Poland. The two visions of history combine in uneasy coexistence in the Polish consciousness. One striking feature of Polish culture is its fascination with the national past; the unusual variety and intensity of that past defy tidy conclusions and produce energetic debate among Poles themselves on the meaning of their history.

Poland’s monarch Sigismund I (1506-1548) already ruled over vast realms from the Baltic to the Black Sea when he was receiving the oath of allegiance from Albrecht I, prince of Prussia, at Krakow’s Grand Square in 1525. Concurrently Sigismund’s brother Wladyslaw was the king of Hungary and the Czech lands.
Poland’s History
In the second half of the 10th century Slavonic tribes of the Vistula river-basin formed Poland, and soon their Christian kingdom became a regional power. Then, nearly two centuries of internal strife and decline came in the 12th c. After its 1320 restoration the Polish kingdom, with Krakow as its capital, braced itself to rise to the domination in the eastern half of Europe throughout the 15th and 16th centuries. At the same time Poland evolved into Europe’s granary and a virtual republic with elected kings and all-powerful parliaments. Fierce and practically ceaseless wars of the 17th c and the 18th c sapped the country’s strength and eventually led to its partition among aggressive neighbor empires of Russia, Austria and Prussia by the end of the 18th century. A series of Polish uprisings marked the next hundred years of European history. Finally, Poland regained its sovereignty in 1918 and sealed it with the 1920 victory over Soviet Russia’s Red Army.

A Short History of Polish Anarchism The movement developed at the end of the 19th century under the influence of anarchist ideas coming from Western Europe and Russia. However, these ideas were not uniform. We can distinguish the ideas of the controversial Niechayev, valiant Bakunin, anarcho-communist Kropotkin, and pacifist Lev Tolstoy. The first and the most significant anarchist group in Poland during the Russian rule, was organised in 1903 in Bialystok. This group mainly consisted of people of Jewish nationality. In the next years such groups appeared in other cities: Warsaw, Lodz, Kielce, Siedlce and other. The Russian revolution of 1905 and the "bloody sunday" in Petersburg strengthened the activity of all groups. Besides active propaganda, they began to make acts of terror, such as: assasinating police officers or owners of large factories, robbing banks, etc... Today, most of polish anarchists reject such acts of terror. But one should realise the extent of the cruelty and despotism of the Tsar's power at the beginning of this century. Young anarchists were often executed without a trial. The police very often fired to the demonstrating workers. Meanwhile, anarchists in Poland began to be influenced by materials propagating anarcho-syndicalism. The followers of this idea rejected terrorism because it was anti-social and because it disrupted the anarchist movement. Instead, they organised revolutionary trade-unions and propaganda activity.

History and Overview home search database your town FAQ ... support/donations History and quick overview Jewish Records Indexing - Poland is creating a searchable database of indices to Jewish records of Poland . Launched in early 1995, award winning JRI - Poland is already the largest fully searchable database of Jewish vital records accessible online. The JRI - Poland database was conceived as a valuable FIRST step in finding or locating clues to locating family records from among the millions of Jewish vital records for hundreds of Polish towns and villages. See "PolandV" InfoFile for a detailed description of these records. If researchers recognize some of their families' names and records in a search of the JRI - Poland database, they will open the door to more focussed research opportunities. For many new genealogists, this will mean a simplification of the initial process. However, experienced researchers of Polish vital records will caution their fellow genealogists that finding a few records and/or identifying the town in which one's family lived is only the beginning. While the use of computer based technology (Internet, databases, email, World-Wide-Web) may have provided a "kick-start" to some research, detailed work lies ahead. Therefore, all researchers must remember:
