Aviation Accident
Total Score=60
Definition
An accident involving a multi-passenger or cargo aircraft resulting in injuries, loss of life and destruction of private, business and industrial property when it impacts.
Background
The Auburn/Lewiston Municipal Airport is located on the Lewiston Junction Road in Auburn, within a mile of the Poland town line. It is the only airport near Poland that is capable of handling multi-passenger or cargo aircraft. Other commercial airports are located in Minot, Oxford, and Turner. Several lakes and ponds are also used in Poland by seaplane or amphibious aircraft. The Auburn/Lewiston Municipal Airport may soon have large cargo jets arriving and departing. The traffic patterns of these aircraft are substantially larger than the smaller aircraft that usually operate at the field. This will increase the risk of an accident occurring in Poland if the runways are expanded.
History
Only one airline accident occurred in Androscoggin County. This occurred in 1985 when a Bar Harbor Airlines Beech 99 crashed, killing all aboard. The crash site occurred within a mile of the Poland town line.

44. History Of The Jews In Poland
History of the Jews in Poland. Early History In the 14th and 15th centuries the main occupation of Jews in Poland was local and long distance trade.
http://members.core.com/~mikerose/history.html
History of the Jews in Poland Early History The earliest verifiable records of Jewish settlement in Poland date from the late 11th century. However, it is generally believed that Jews arrived in Poland much earlier. Many scholars discard the theory that a large number of followers of the Judaic faith came to Poland from the east in about 965 after the fall of the Khazar state. While it is true that the rulers of Khazar converted to Judaism, there is substantial disagreement amongst researchers as to whether or not their subjects converted in significant numbers. The first Jews to arrive on Polish territory were merchants who were referred to as Radhanites. The Radhanites were merchants whose trade extended over vast distances between east ans west. They were fluent in Arabic, Persian, Greek, Spanish, "Franklish" and "Slav" languages. Their entrance occurred simultaneously with the formation of the Polish state. One of them was Ibrahim ibn Jacob, the author of the first extensive account about Poland. In the summer of 965 or 966 Jacob made a trade and diplomatic journey from his native Toledo in Moslem Spain to the Holy Roman Empire and Slavonic countries. Feudal disintegration, the birth of towns and the development of commodity money relations favored the settlement by Jews in Poland. Nevertheless, the influx of Jews was brought about mostly by their persecution in Western Europe, which gained in force during the crusades. Among the first Jews to arrive in Poland (in 1097 or 1098) were those banished from Prague. Jews from Bohemia and Germany settled primarily in Silesia. They usually engaged in trade and agriculture and some owned landed estates. By the middle of the14th century they had occupied thirty-five Silesian towns. Jewish settlement in other parts of Poland proceeded at a much slower pace and the first mention of Jewish settlers in Plock dates from 1237, in Kalisz from 1287 and a Zydowska (Jewish) street in Krakow in 1304.

HISTORY AND CULTURE
The first Polish state was established in the 10th century by Mieszko I. Under him the Poles became Christians. Mieszko's descendants, known as the Piast Dynasty, expanded Polish power. Major enemies at this time were the German Teutonic Knights and the Tatars. After a period of political unrest Wladyslaw I reunited the kingdom in 1320, and his son Casimir III the Great protected it from its enemies and developed its economy and society. In 1386 Queen Jadwiga married Wladyslaw II Jagiello, the grand duke of Lithuania, uniting two powerful states. In 1410 their armies defeated the German Teutonic Knights at the battle of Tannenberg. (See also Jagiellon Dynasty.) In the 16th century, Poland and Lithuania expanded eastward to annex much of the Ukraine and some Russian territory. From this time the Russians also became one of Poland's major opponents. The greatest king of this period was Sigismund II Augustus.
In 1572 Sigismund II died without an heir. Under the following Vasa Dynasty, Poland became involved in wars with Sweden, Russia, and Turkey. In 1610 the Poles succeeded in occupying Moscow, but this success was short-lived. Russian advances on Polish territory and a Swedish invasion in 1655 created a major crisis. The Poles fought back, however, and the Swedish invasion was checked while a truce with Russia was obtained. John III Sobieski defended Vienna against the Turks in 1683 and saved Western Europe from a Turkish invasion.
Prussia, Russia, and Austria all annexed parts of Poland in 1772. A small Polish state was left at the mercy of its enemies. In 1793 Poland was further partitioned among the three powers. The patriot Thaddeus Kosciusko led a peasant army in a national insurrection against the Russians. In 1795 Poland's last remaining territory was occupied by the three partitioning powers. Many Poles fled the country. In 1807 Napoleon supported the formation of a small and weak Polish state, but after Napoleon's defeat by Russia the Russians returned.

The nucleus of Slav homeland lies between the Oder (Odra) and Vistula (Wisla) rivers. In time Slavs expanded into new territories to the east, south and west becoming increasingly differentiated. By AD 800, three main geographical and linguistic divisions had arisen; the East Slavs inhabiting a large part of European Russia, the South Slavs who settled in the Balkan Peninsula, and the West Slavs who settled in what is now Poland, Czechoslovakia and East Germany. The West Slavs suffered different fates; the Lusatians and Veleti were absorbed by German expansion, the Czechs and Moravians merged to form the nucleus of the Czech Kingdom, whilst the Slovaks became part of the kingdom of Hungary. The remaining tribes, including the Polanie, Wislanie, Pomorzanie and the Mazovians, joined together (in time) to form the Polish State. The earliest documentary record from that part of Europe which in now called Poland, dates from AD 965-966. In those years, Ibrahim-Ibn-Jakub, a Moorish Jew from Tortosa in Spain, accompanied the Khalif of Cordoba on an embassy to central Europe. He visited Prague, and possibly Cracow, which lay at the time within the kingdom of the Czechs. Fragments of his report were known to later Arab geographers: " The lands of the Slavs stretch from the Syrian Sea to the Ocean in the north... They comprise numerous tribes, each different from the other... At present, there are four kings: the king of the Bulgars; Bojeslav, King of Faraga, Boiema and Karako; Mesko, king of the North; and Nakon on the border of the west...

THE HISTORY OF POLAND: THE SECOND WORLD WAR
Invasion:
On September 1st., 1939, 1.8 million German troops invaded Poland on three fronts; East Prussia in the north, Germany in the west and Slovakia in the south. They had 2600 tanks against the Polish 180, and over 2000 aircraft against the Polish 420. Their "Blitzkrieg" tactics, coupled with their bombing of defenceless towns and refugees, had never been seen before and, at first, caught the Poles off-guard. By September 14th. Warsaw was surrounded. At this stage the poles reacted, holding off the Germans at Kutno and regrouping behind the Wisla (Vistula) and Bzura rivers. Although Britain and France declared war on September 3rd. the Poles received no help - yet it had been agreed that the Poles should fight a defensive campaign for only 2 weeks during which time the Allies could get their forces together and attack from the west. On September 17th. Soviet forces invaded from the east. Warsaw surrendered 2 weeks later, the garrison on the Hel peninsula surrendered on October 2nd., and the Polesie Defence group, after fighting on two fronts against both German and Soviet forces, surrendered on October 5th. The Poles had held on for twice as long as had been expected and had done more damage to the Germans than the combined British and French forces were to do in 1940. The Germans lost 50,000 men, 697 planes and 993 tanks and armoured cars. Thousands of soldiers and civilians managed to escape to France and Britain whilst many more went "underground" . A government-in-exile was formed with Wladyslaw Raczkiewicz as President and General Wladyslaw Sikorski as Prime Minister.

var pageName = "History"; var server = "pl-info"; var channel = "English"; var code = ' '; Welcome Register Contact Services ... Explore History Overview European wars have raged Poland for hundreds of years, resulting in the partitioning of the Polish State and the destruction of its cities several times over. The beginnings of the Polish State date back to the 10th century, when prince Mieszko I, founder of the Royal Piast Dynasty, took under his rule most of the ethnically Polish territories and accepted Christianity. Poland gained in strength in the 11th century under Boleslaw Chrobry, the first Polish king. Frequent battles with the Teutonic Knights, the German military and religious orders, marked the next several hundred years. In 1226 the Knights occupied most of Poland and it was not until 1410, a date that is still remembered today, that the Poles finally defeated them in the Battle of Grunwald. In the 15th century, under the rule of the Jagiellonian Dynasty, Poland became one of the mightiest states in Europe. The years that followed until the late 17th century make up Poland's Golden Age, a time of relative peace and prosperous development. Beginning in the late 17th century and continuing throughout the 18th century, life becomes more difficult for the Poles. Starting in 1772, Prussia, Austria and Russia began to conquer and divide up parts of Poland, and by 1795 nothing was left. The Polish State had simple ceased to exist. The Polish people tried to regain independence through a number of armed risings, the biggest of these, in 1830 and in 1863. Poland did not appear again on European maps for 123 years, until it was re-established in the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I on 11th of November 1918.
