History
THE POLES POSSESS one of the richest and most venerable historical traditions of all European peoples. Convention fixes the origins of Poland as a nation near the middle of the tenth century, contemporaneous with the Carolingians, Vikings, and Saracens, and a full hundred years before the Norman conquest of Britain in 1066. Throughout the subsequent centuries, the Poles managed despite great obstacles to build and maintain an unbroken cultural heritage. The same cannot be said of Polish statehood, which was notoriously precarious and episodic. Periods of independence and prosperity alternated with phases of foreign domination and disaster. Especially in more recent centuries, frequent adversity subjected the Poles to hardships scarcely equaled in European history. Many foreign observers perceive Poland as a perennial victim of history, whose survival through perseverance and a dogged sense of national identity has left a mixed legacy of indomitable courage and intolerance toward outsiders. To Poles, their history includes brighter recollections of Poland as a highly cultured kingdom, uniquely indulgent of ethnic and religious diversity and precociously supportive of human liberty and the fundamental values of Western civilization. The contrast between these images reflects the extremes of fortune experienced by Poland. The two visions of history combine in uneasy coexistence in the Polish consciousness. One striking feature of Polish culture is its fascination with the national past; the unusual variety and intensity of that past defy tidy conclusions and produce energetic debate among Poles themselves on the meaning of their history.

Poland lies in the very heart of the continent which was at one time, at the crossing point of the ancient merchant and also today's transport routes between the North and the South, the East and the West of Europe. Poland's northern border runs along the Baltic seashore with three major ports: Gdynia, Gdansk and Szczecin; from the South the Carpathian Mountains range with high, rocky Tatra Mountains. In the East the border runs along the lowland majestic Bug River and in the West the border runs along the busy Odra River. The longest Polish river, the Vistula (1,047 km), runs through the centre of the country. Poland from the North borders on Russia (216 km - Kaliningrad district), from the East - on Lithuania (99 km), Belarus (420 km) an the Ukraine (509 km), from the South - on Slovakia (540 km) and the Czech Republic (720 km) and from the West - on Germany (467 km). The length of the sea frontier running along the beautiful sandy beaches mounts to 528 km. Poland belongs to medium size countries, its area totalling 312,685 sq. km puts it on the 9th place in Europe and the 63th in the world. Poland is slightly bigger than, say, Great Britain or Italy.

Zwiazek Harcerstwa Polskiego (ZHP - The Polish Scout Association) is a Scout and Guide organization with a total membership of almost 450,000 (210,000 males, 240,000 females) operating in a country with a population of 38 million people. There are 600 districts and 25 regions in the association. ZHP, after a transformation in the early nineties, has regained the respect of Polish society. It has established relationships with State and local authorities while safeguarding its independence. ZHP has a strong tradition of forest camping, and traditional Scout activities are combined with modern ideas to reach the educational objectives of the association. ZHP has very well developed special skill activities, such as Sea Scouting, parachuting, ballooning, scuba diving. Last year the association started a program entitled "My Homelands" which offers a framework for the activities of every unit. The first part of this program concluded at the World Camp of Polish Scouting and Guiding in August 1995 which gathered six thousand Scouts and Guides including 400 from abroad. The part of the program which is being implemented now is a project called "Water is Life", focusing on developing better understanding and protection of the natural environment. ZHP is a "Scout and Guide National Organization" in accordance with the Statement on Relationships between WAGGGS and WOSM.

    http://www.aristotle.net/~swarmack/aurohist.html
HISTORY OF THE AUROCHS (Bos taurus primigenius) IN POLAND Mieczyslaw Rokosz Address SUMMARY 1.0 INTRODUCTION The fact of the extinction of the last aurochs (Bos taurus primigenius) in the royal forests of Jaktorowski at Mazowsze in Poland at the beginning of the 17th century is well known. It was the last natural reserve of that splendid, once admired animal, in Europe. The original respect for aurochs on the part of Homo sapiens is shown in the famous palaeolithic frescoes of Magdalenian Lascaux and Altamira. Detailed and admiring descriptions of this animal are found in the classical writings of Tacitus (Annales IV, 72 and Germania 45) Giulius Caesar (Commentarii de bello Gallico IV) and Pliny (Historia naturalis VIII, 38). Such a lucky long survival of the original species of aurochs in Poland prompts the question "Why?". Apart from favourable natural conditions, such as the abundance of forest, a favourable climate and so on, there was undoubtedly another equally important cultural factor, namely the legal protection of this statechosen animal, which has its origin in the deep medieval period. 2.0 THE EARLY TIMES

    http://www.experiencepoland.com/history.html
Poles are known for their history which abounds with the days of glory and fame, the days of downfall and the days of war. Poles belong to the most patriotic and rebellious people in Europe. Because of difficult geographical position in Europe, between two aggressive powers, Russia and Germany, Poland had often to fight against these states in defense of their country.
Poland boundaries shifted east and west as its power waxed and waned, from being the largest country in Europe in the 17th century, to being completely wiped off the map from the end of the 18th century until after WWI. The nation reemerged at this point, only to be devastated in WWII, losing six million people and being the most destroyed country in Europe.
Poland changed the course of history in 1989 by becoming the first Eastern Europe state to break free of communism. Since than, economic, social and psychological changes have been enormous.

    http://www.cclslib.org/kennedy/townofpolandhistory.htm
KENNEDY HISTORY We know little of the customs and culture of the first American Indians in this area, but they left a heritage to our early settlers of a civilization well founded and a land they loved and enjoyed from nature's own gift. After the settlers arrived and the plowing of the lands became more common many Indian implements, flints and signs of their presence in this area have been discovered. Some of the Typical Projectile Points found in the Town of Poland A beautiful pipe and several large spear heads were found near Kennedy by Mr. Fay Stafford of Clark's Corners. He also found an excellent flint tomahawk found in the same locality. ( information on Fay Stafford was found in the book "Jamestown Past and Present" published in 1913.) It was in 1798 that Amzi Atwater a surveyor of the Holland Land Company was on a survey of this area and reported back to Joseph Ellicott, Agent of the Company, about the beautiful forest of white pines, measuring from 5 to 6 feet in breath, also maple, birch, beech, and chestnut. Doctor Thomas Ruston Kennedy who built the first mills, was the son of Doctor Samuel Kennedy and his mother was the daughter of Doctor Ruston, an eminent surgeon of Philadelphia, PA.
