Set in the heart of Europe, Poland is a multifaceted country where the capital and medieval towns are trawled by contemporary city slickers, and where horse-drawn carts negotiate country lanes, untouched by progress. Poland remains reasonably cheap and safe, with hospitable people who welcome visitors. Over the past decade, it has developed into a modern, vibrant and progressive state, yet at the same time it maintains its traditional culture. It's a fascinating destination and now is a good time to go. Factoid

That was the year when Mieszko I, the first historical representative of the old Polish Piast dynasty, accepted Christianity from the south. He is the first member of the gallery of Polish Kings in spite of the fact that only his son, Boleslaw Chrobry - Boleslaw the Brave - was the first ruler to be actually crowned. In Poland's lengthy and tumultuous history, its Golden Age , which flourished under the last two kings of the Jagiellonian dynasty, deserves special attention. This was a time rich in art, poetry, religious experience, scientific advances and economic prosperity. It inspired astronomer Nicholas Copernicus to assign Earth a new place in the solar system and moved Wit Stwosz to create his unsurpassed altarpiece, which can still be admired in Krakow's St. Mary's Church to this very day. In Krakow, the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill was converted into a splendid Renaissance residence, while a handsome fortress city went up in Zamosc.

In the first centuries of its emergence in the 10th century , the Polish nation was led by a series of strong rulers who converted the Poles to Christendom , created a strong Central European state, and integrated Poland into European culture . Formidable foreign enemies and internal fragmentation eroded this initial structure in the thirteenth century , but consolidation in the laid the base for the dominant Polish Kingdom that was to follow. The Jagiellon dynasty formed the Polish-Lithuanian union begining with the Lithuanian grand duke Jagiello . The partnership proved profitable for the Poles and Lithuanians, who played a dominant role in one of the most powerful empires in Europe for the next three centuries. The Nihil novi act adopted by the Polish Sejm parliament ) in transferred most legislative power from the monarch to the Sejm. This event marked the beginning of the period known as "

A: MIDDLE AGES Legends: There is a legend about the three forefathers of Slavonic nations: There were three brothers Lech, Czech and Rus who wandered with their kin tribes away from the original Slavonic settlements in the present area of Ukraine (between the Vistula and the Dnepr rivers). Rus moved to the east while the other two wandered with their people westwards. Lech stayed in the lowlands and established his town near a white eagle's nest (the white eagle is the country's coat of arms). Czech went more to the south. Slavonic tribes came to Poland in the 6th century AD. The first town of the Polan tribe was Gniezno, along with Poznan, the oldest capital of Poland. It was there where the first royal dynasty resided, the Piasts, who drew their pedigree from the mythical Piast, a wheelwright who founded a dynasty that ruled until 1370. The Polan tribe dwelled in the western areas of today's Poland, in Wielkopolska, whereas Krakow was the central settlement of the Wislan tribe.

[edit this] [Upload image] Poland's written history begins with the reign of Mieszko I who accepted Christianity for himself and his kingdom in AD 966. The Polish state reached its zenith under the Jagiellonian dynasty in the years following the union with Lithuania in 1386 and the subsequent defeat of the Teutonic Knights at Grunwald in 1410. The monarchy survived many upheavals but eventually went into a decline which ended with the final partition of Poland by Prussia Russia and Austria in 1795. However the Poles were largely responsible for achieving their own independence in 1918. Authoritarian rule predominated for most of the period before World War II. In 1938, Poland participated (with Germany) in the partition of Czechoslovakia, taking from CS "Zaolzie" - land behind Olza river (Cesky Tesin, Jablunkov) Resistance against the Nazis in Warsaw including uprisings by Jews in the Warsaw ghetto and by the Polish underground was brutally suppressed. As the Germans retreated in January 1945 they leveled the city.
