Poland
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Poland gained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite country following the war, but one that was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of an independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. Complete freedom came with the implosion of the USSR in 1991. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, boosting hopes for early acceptance to the EU. Poland joined the NATO alliance in 1999. Geography [Top of Page] Location: Central Europe, east of Germany

Poland's Geography
Cultivated and Captivating

Poland anchors the center of the European continent, with an area of 312,683 square km including about 500 km of coastline along the Baltic Sea to the north. Seven countries border Poland to the west, the Polish/German border runs along the Oder and Neisse rivers. To the north, Poland is bordered by Russia; to the east by Lithuania, Belarus and the Ukraine; and in the south by the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Sudeten and Carpathian Mountains. In general, Poland is a flat country with an average height above sea level of 568 ft. Poland's climate is greatly influenced by oceanic air currents from the west, cold polar air from Scandinavia and Russia, as well as warmer, sub-tropical air from the south. Most of Poland's land is used for agriculture. Poland's topography played a major role in its history, as its flat terrain and the lack of natural barriers on the North European Plain provided no resistance to military advances and made these borders difficult to defend. Its northern frontier on the Baltic Sea gives it easy access to Scandinavian and North Sea ports. Poland `s shape is roughly square, measuring 400-440 miles across. The capital, Warsaw , is situated in the center of the country. Poland `s surface area of 120,727 sq. miles ranks eighth in Europe . The country lies almost entirely on the North European Plain and is a land of gentle relief, rarely rising above 350 feet except along the southern border with the Sudety and Carpathian mountain ranges. Rysy is the highest mountain peak, 8200 feet above sea level. Approximately one-fifth of the land is maintained as pasture and meadows. About 27% of the total area is covered by forest. The longest rivers which cross the country northward are the Vistula (667 miles in length) in the center, and the Odra (530 miles) which flows along

    19. Poland Geography
Geography. Generally speaking, Poland is an unbroken plain reaching from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Carpathian Mountains in the south.
    http://www.country-studies.com/poland/geography.html
    Geography
    Topography
To the south of the lowlands are the lesser Poland uplands, a belt varying in width from ninety to 200 kilometers, formed by the gently sloping foothills of the Sudeten and Carpathian mountain ranges and the uplands that connect the ranges in southcentral Poland. The topography of this region is divided transversely into higher and lower elevations, reflecting its underlying geological structure. In the western section, the Silesia-Kraków Upthrust contains rich coal deposits. The Baltic coastal plains are a low-lying region formed of sediments deposited by the sea. The coastline was shaped by the action of the rising sea after the Scandinavian ice sheet retreated. The two major inlets in the smooth coast are the Pomeranian Bay on the German border in the far northwest and the Gulf of Gdansk in the east. The Oder River empties into the former, and the Vistula forms a large delta at the head of the latter. Sandbars with large dunes form lagoons and coastal lakes along much of the coast. Drainage
