The Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners is located in Collegium Maius, a historic building which initially served as the administrative offices for the Nicolaus Copernicus University, and which today houses the university's Faculty of Languages. Collegium Maius is situated on the edge of Torun's historic Old Town, which makes it an attractive meeting place for people interested in arts and literature. Student dormitories, cafeterias, and clubs are all within easy reach of Collegium Maius. Academic Courses During the regular academic year the Centre provides courses for those interested in learning or expanding their knowledge of the Polish language, culture, and history. During summer we organise intensive courses in Polish language for foreigners. Torun, an ancient town once on the crossroads of commercial and cultural routes, has become again a meeting point for young people from Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, Rumania, France, the Ukraine, and other nations. Students from many nations make new friends and establish close relationships with other students. This is a unique opportunity to meet people coming from various countries!

Way of Life
Before World War II Poland was largely agricultural and much of the population lived in rural areas. However, when the Communists took control of the government in 1945, Poland was transformed into an industrial nation, and many Poles left their farms and took jobs in the cities. In rural areas, Polish families often live in small cottages made of bricks or wood; city dwellers usually live in apartments. Most Poles prefer Western-style clothing to traditional forms of dress. However, traditional Polish clothing is sometimes worn in rural areas where the country’s folk heritage remains strong, and on holidays and other special occasions. Traditional Polish foods include pierogi (stuffed dumplings);

Poland's Week in Culture Wojtek Kosc This edition of the Polish Culture Roundup is exceptionally devoted to a single, but giant, figure in Polish (and not only that) cultural life: Leon Tarasewicz. Apart from a piece on him and his art, there are two short news items on film. In this week's overview of cultural events in Poland we have: Click on the appropiate heading or just scroll down to browse.
Hans Kloss
Who is Hans Kloss? There is no real need for an answer for anyone interested in Polish film. A near cult figure from the Communist-era TV series, a hero captain of the Polish army disguised in an Abwehra outfit and wreaking havoc among German occupying forces in Warsaw. The times in which the series was made must have demanded some historic misgivings in the scenario. So in 2000, Władysław Pasikowski, director of the (in)famous Psy (Dogs) is going to shoot the cinema version of the Hans Kloss adventures. This time without any ideological aberrations. The screenplay is finished and shooting is to begin in May this year. The most electrifying detail - the cast - is being kept secret however.
The Września Film Festival
Września (western Poland) hosted a film festival devoted to productions dealing with rural and small town themes in film and documentary. Audience saw films by Jerzy Stuhr, Urszula Urbaniak or Krzysztof Krauze, director of the famed

C U L T U R E R O U N D - U P:
Poland's Week in Culture
Wojtek Kosc This week the Belarusan cultural monthly Czasopis was accused of carrying anti-Polish messages. The stir was caused by an essay from the editor, Sokrat Janowicz, in which he unfavourably described the "Armia Krajowa" (one of the Polish resistance armies during the Second World War) as possessing fascist features. The accuser was MP Krzysztof Jurgiel of Electoral Action Solidarity (AWS). According to him, such texts are anti-Polish and should not appear in print. Janowicz claims that AWS authorities in the Bialystok region (where Czasopis appears) have targeted the Belarusan minority as being harmful. An exhibition presenting works inspired by Greek and Roman mythology has opened in the National Museum in Warsaw. Objects ranging from ancient Greek vases to 19th century graphics, all with mythological motives, are on display. The exhibition is open to public until 7 November. 8 October was the 25th anniversary of Marian Falski's death. Falski's contribution to national culture cannot be underestimated as he was the author of Elementarz , a book for teaching children reading and writing.

Poster Art in Poland
Piotr Sarzynski In 1968 the first poster museum in the world was opened in Warsaw. Two years earlier, Poland had held the First International Poster Biennial , which for many years was the most prestigious event of its kind. The proximity of those two events was no coincidence. At that time, Poland was known for being the centre of "wall and board" art. Its distinct character and artistic value meant that the world soon began to speak of the Polish poster school.
Henryk Tomaszewski The school emerged in the late 1950s, when, after years of Social Realism being all-pervasive in art, Polish artistic life suddenly became much more exciting. Although success is usually dependent on many factors, we can safely say that the Polish poster school has one person to thank - the painter, drawer and graphic artist, Henryk Tomaszewski . He quickly gained the support of young and extremely talented artists who for years dedicated themselves to poster art. The most important artists of the Polish poster school were Jozef Mroszczak Wojciech Zamecznik Jan Mlodozeniec Waldemar Swierzy Jan Lenica and Franciszek Starowieyski A good deal of thought has been given to the school's phenomenon. It seems that its success can be attributed to social, as well as artistic, conditions. The genial political climate in the country at the time was an important factor. Moreover, every possible organisation, especially those in the cultural arena, were vying for posters painted by one of the famous artists. For many years there was no film, opera or theatre premiere, concert, festival or other public event without a poster. "There were years when I was making a poster every week, and even so I often had to decline commissions," Waldemar Swierzy remembers. The Poster Museum has collected a few thousand Polish posters painted between 1956 and 1963 only.

    In Poland, a culture revitalized
    By Richard Bernstein The New York Times WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 2005 NOWA HUTA, Poland You won't find two people more seemingly different than Bartosz Szydlowski and Leopold Kozlowski, separated by nearly two generations, living and working in Polish towns that represent contrasting pasts and contrasting presents. And you won't find two Polish towns more different than Nowa Huta and Krakow, where the men live. One, Nowa Huta, is the dull, industrial Communist-model community that Poland wants to forget; the other, Krakow, is the ornate, ancient and adorable former capital whose past the Poles and millions of tourists are striving, almost with desperation, to remember. But each in its own way - especially when looked at through Szydlowski and Kozlowski - is doing the same thing: trying to revitalize itself on the culture front, displaying a penchant for nostalgia and striving to overcome the weight of Poland's tormented past.
