French Ambassador to Poland Patrick Gautrat talks to
How long have you been an ambassador to Poland? What are the personal highlights of your time here?
I have been an ambassador for two and a half years in Poland. I think the greatest moments during my stay here included Poland's accession to the EU, after difficult negotiations, and of course the referendum last year, whose result was uncertain until the last minute. This final result was my best souvenir of those days. Of course there were both good and bad times during my term of office. Diplomats know that both positive and negative moments come with the job. Honestly speaking, there was a balance between the two.

Culture The great periods of Western cultural and intellectual expression are paralleled by the history of Polish creativity. The Italian Renaissance inspired a great burst of culture in Poland. The Reformation sped the development of a Polish vernacular literature, and in the 18th and 19th centuries Poles were greatly influenced by French culture. Acknowledgements: ASIATRAVELMART.COM

Published: 22 October 2000 Krakow has a mixed history. It is the city of Auschwitz and Oskar Schindler (much of the Spielberg movie was filmed here), and it is also a city of extraordinary artistic grace and wealth. Unlike Warsaw, which replaced it as Poland's capital in 1596, Krakow survived the Nazis with its fabric mostly unscathed. Even 45 years of Communist rule have left no trace - beyond the brutalist Bunker of Art - on the Old Town's architecture. The absence of cars and the presence, on every corner, it seems, of busking string quartets make walking around an unmitigated pleasure. Krakow has a mixed history. One particular feature of Polish culture, highlighting it in the eyes of the world, is the unusual melange of metaphysical searching and historical experience. This is also true of the visual arts. During the period of partition, Poles succeeded in preserving their identity only thanks to religion and culture. In a country deprived of its own state and torn into three partitions, art and poetry had specific tasks: maintaining the national memory, organizing the Polish imagination and preserving the national identity?

Poland is comparable in size to Italy or Germany (in USA larger than New Mexico) and with a population of approximately 39 millions (e.g. more than California) it ranks among the most influential and remarkable countries in central and Eastern Europe. Poland is a stable democracy with a truly fascinating history, great cultural heritage and several areas of outstanding natural beauty. Many Polish tourist sights have already gained a worldwide reputation and are an absolute must to see if you consider a journey to this area: Kraków, Warszawa, Gdañsk, Czêstochowa, Auschwitz, the Tatra mountains.

    The First Jews in Poland
The date of the arrival of the first Jews onto Polish soil is unknown. Ibrahim ibn Jakub (a Jewish traveler, merchant and diplomat from Tortosa,Spain) in the account of his journey in 965, mentioned Krakow and wrote of his first historic Duke of Poland, Mieszko I . The author of these historically valuable notes was certainly not the only Jew to travel through the Piast lands. Some settled here permanently with their families to make their livelihoods through commerce and the crafts. In later times, banished from many countries, victims of social and religious upheavals, intolerance, and persecution, Jews looked to Poland for asylum and here they found it. Polish dukes and kings, such as Boleslaw Pobozny (1221-1279) and Kazimierz Wielki (1310-1370) , appreciated their talents and thus granted them privileges and conditions for a peaceful life. Boleslaw Pobozny's Charter of Kalisz (1264) guaranteed full security for Jews, their communities, and property. Accounts have survived of the "Rhodans"

For almost 800 years Jewish religion and culture flourished in Poland. Our 2-week seminar-styled course on Jewish history and culture in Poland will be led by Professor Robert Cohn. Dr. Cohn currently holds the Philip and Muriel Berman Chair in Jewish Studies at Lafayette College in Easton PA.
    The Jewish Experience in Poland
July 02 - July 16 in Krakow, Poland The virtual disappearance of Jewish life in communist Poland after World War II makes it easy to forget the fact that for almost 800 years Jewish religion and culture flourished in Poland . While Jewish culture often developed separately from that of Poles in "small town” Yiddish-speaking shtetl settings and cities such as Kazimierz, Jews were also an important integrated part of the fabric of what was Polish urban society in the 19th and 20th centuries. Indeed, pre-WWII Warsaw was somewhat like contemporary New York, where many Jews would have not had a problem in identifying themselves fully as Jews, Warsavians and Poles, without the need for a separation of identity based on religious background. At the same time, some Polish political parties sought to isolate Jews and prevent their integration into Polish society. The tragedy of the Nazi occupation of Poland and Holocaust of the Second World War, combined with the post-war communist legacy has led to many problematic issues both in academic and wider circles concerning Polish-Jewish relations. While the 20th century saw great tragedy, there is also a rich and colourful past that represents an important and often ignored historical legacy not only for Jews but for Poles. Moreover, the rebirth of Jewish life in the last two decades and Polish interest in its Jewish past are phenomena worthy of serious consideration.
