WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links For centuries, Poland has been a bridge between the East and West. Set in the heart of Europe, Poland is a multifaceted country where the capital and medieval towns are trawled by contemporary city slickers, and where horse-drawn carts negotiate country lanes, untouched by progress. Poland remains reasonably cheap and safe, with hospitable people who welcome visitors. Over the past decade, it has developed into a modern, vibrant and progressive state, yet at the same time it maintains its traditional culture. It's a fascinating destination and now is a good time to go. Factoid

Poland Time and Date Poland Culture Back to Top The 7th largest nation in Europe, Poland is located in the middle of the North European Plain that extends from the Netherlands to the Ural Mountains of Russia. Although its topography is broken by some terrain variations, particularly in the south, most of Poland deficiencys remarkable changes of elevation. The combination of geographic location and topography has strongly determined Polish society and the nation's relations with surrounding nations. Both by cultural tradition and by recent social policy, Poles were comparatively well educated. The 1990 literacy rate was 98 %. At that time, more than 17 % of Poles had postsecondary education, and 4 % had achieved advanced college degrees. The end of communist rule in 1989 presented new challenges to Polish society and to government policy makers. The concept of universal, state-guaranteed protection from unemployment, sickness, and poverty was challenged as Poland turned toward privatization and opened its economy to market forces. Although society had retained a healthy skepticism about the benefits of total socialization, postcommunist governments could not devise replacement social programs fast enough to avoid bitter social dissatisfaction when the security of the old system disappeared.

CULTURE One of the major cultural contributions of Poland to the world has been its literature. The earliest writings in Polish date from the 15th century, though Poles were writing in Latin at an earlier date. Most of this early literature was religious in nature. One of the first writers to use Polish exclusively was Mikolaj Rej (1505-69), who wrote poetry and prose. The literature of the 18th century showed the influence of contacts with Western Europe. The first major Polish woman writer, ElZbieta DruZbacka, appeared at this time. The establishment of a national theater in Warsaw in 1765 encouraged a number of dramatists such as Wojciech Boguslawski and Franciszek Zablocki. Aleksander Fredro wrote popular comedies. The Romantic period of the early 19th century produced some of Poland's greatest poets, of whom the most famous was Adam Mickiewicz. Much of his work was written in exile in Russia, including his great national epic, 'Pan Tadeusz' (1834). Other poets and dramatists of the period were Juliusz Slowacki, Zygmunt Krasinski, and Cyprian Norwid. At the end of the 19th century writers emerged such as Aleksander Glowacki, a supporter of realism who wrote under the name Boleslaw Prus, and Henryk Sienkiewicz, whose novel 'Quo Vadis?' (1896) became internationally famous. Sienkiewicz also wrote novels about heroic periods in Poland's past. In the early 20th century a notable writer was Wladyslaw Reymont, whose four-volume novel 'The Peasants' (1902-09) achieved worldwide fame. Reymont and Sienkiewicz both won Nobel prizes in literature. Stefan zeromski wrote novels, stories, and plays, while Stanislaw Wyspianski was a playwright.

History
The style and personality of Polish life has been shaped over a thousand years. The national culture developed at the crossroads of the Latinate and Byzantine worlds, in continual dialogue with the many ethnic groups in Poland. The people of Poland have always been hospitable to artists from abroad, and eager to follow what was happening in other countries. In the 19th and 20th centuries Poles' concentration on cultural advancement often took the place of political and economic activity. These factors have contributed to the versatile character of Polish art, with all its complex nuances.
