Pattern and Variation
Introduction
Dionysian or chaotic element) and Apollo (the Apollonian or formal aspect of poetry.) Just as the two Greek gods of poetry were Apollo and Dionysius, any great poem has elements of both chaos and control. A poem uses the formal (sound and visual) elements of language to control the chaotic (meaningful and expressive) elements of language. Like the lead bars used to control a nuclear reaction on the verge of exploding, form is used to control and curb language to make it digestible, more powerful and contained for the reader. Since, as everyday language users, we are probably more familiar with the Dionysian frustrations of language (who has not uttered the phrase, "I don’t know; it’s hard to put into words"?) our focus will be on the Apollonian or formal elements of a poem. In the making of free verse poetry, pattern is one of the most important ways of building form. Since the free verse poet cannot rely on the authority of an accepted "classical" form, he/she must develop an authority through consistency and variance of pattern. The word "authority" may prick the ears of many poets, as it seems too definitive and demanding. All it means is that the poem is a made thing, a built thing, if you will, and its "authority" is its commanding presence or ability to accurately relay itself to the reader.

Image in Poetry
Introduction What is an image? This is a question that philosophers and poets have asked themselves for thousands of years and have yet to definitively answer. The most widely used definition of an image these days is: "...an intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time." (Ezra Pound) But this definition from Pound has a history to it. Before Pound outlined his definition, the image was seen very differently by most people. Therefore, the question "what is an image?" immediately breaks down into three fundamental parts: 1) Where do images come from?

Poetry and Vietnam John Clark Pratt P oetry that documents the attitudes toward the Vietnam Waras well as the origins, development, and conduct of the waris both pervasive and significant. Although only a few poems by French writers reflect that country's involvement, the Vietnamese tradition of poetic expression produced a large body of work, both personal and political, written by soldiers and civilians of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) and the Republic of Vietnam (RVN). Unfortunately, except for the efforts of American poets John Balaban, Yusef Komunyakka, Kevin Bowen, and Bruce Weigl, most of these poems are not available in translation. Only the Vietnamese expatriate Thích Nhât Hanh published a significant collection in English. His The Cry of Vietnam (1968) contains 15 poems about the devastation of war and the horrors inflicted by all sides. Also a number of poems by Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Lao refugee poets appeared in the numerous volumes of the Viêt Nam Forum Series and the Lac-Viêt Series published after 1983 by the Council on Southeast Asia Studies at Yale University. In Viêt Nam Forum 14 (1994), for instance, Vi t Thanh Nguyên, then a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, wrote in a moving poem about a burning ash heap that he was "yearning to find a clue/ in the ash to my people,/ severed from me with the finality of a butcher's cleaver."

UNDERSTANDING POETRY: AN ANTHOLOGY FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS
by Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren
New York: Henry Holt and Company (revised edition, 1950; Original edition, 1938)
See an excerpt from this anthology on political reference in poetry, specifically Andrew Marvell's "Horation Ode."
from the prefatory "Letter to the Teacher" (1938)
This book has been conceived on the assumption that if poetry is worth teaching at all it is worth teaching as poetry. The temptation to make a substitute for the poem as the object of study is usually overpowering. The substitutes are various, but the most common ones are: 1. Paraphrase of logical and narrative content; 2. Study of biographical and historical materials; 3. Inspirational and didactic interpretation. Of course, paraphrase may be necessary as a preliminary step in the reading of a poem, and a study of the biographical and historical background may do much to clarify interpretation; but these things should be considered as means and not as ends. And though one may consider a poem as an instance of historical or ethical documentation, the poem in itself, if literature is to be studied as literature, remains finally the object for study. Moreover, even if the interest is in the poem as a historical or ethical document, there is a prior consideration: one must grasp the poem as a literary construct before it can offer any real illumination as a document.
from Chapter VI: "STATEMENT AND IDEA"
We have said that a theme in poetry manifests itself in constantly varying ways. Among these manifestations, of course, we find the use of explicit statement as one possible means. For instance, in the "Ode to a Nightingale," which we have already analyzed (pp, 338-45), Keats makes the explicit statement

Poetry Slam Incorporated (PSI), the non-profit organization charged with overseeing the international coalition of poetry slams, as well as their annual National Poetry Slam, has been on a mission since 1997 to "promote the performance and creation of poetry." Today, PSI boasts venues in all fifty states as well as seven countries. Their official site, www.poetryslam.com , contains essential slam community information, including a comprehensive list of venues across the country where readings are held. The site also features basic information on slam, audio and video files of performances, and links to slam-related sites and forums. There is also a Poetry Gallery, profiling a diverse group of slam poets from across the country. Allan Wolf, "slammaster" of the 1994 National Poetry Slam in Asheville, NC, said, "The points are not the point; the point is poetry." This statement has become a mantra on the site as they remind poets and organizers involved in the competition that the goal of slam is to expand poetry's general audience, which is precisely what they are achieving. First World War.com Prose poetry - Georg Trakl.
http://www.firstworldwar.com/poetsandprose/trakl.htm
Updated - Sunday, 6 October, 2002 Georg Trakl (1887-1914), the Austrian Expressionist poet, served with the Austrian army during the first three months of the war before committing suicide on 3/4 November 1914. Born to a middle class Protestant family in Salzburg on 3 February 1887, Trakl's mother was unhappy throughout his childhood and considered emotionally unstable. In turn, as Trakl progressed through his own childhood he began himself to withdraw from friends and family and similarly demonstrated early signs of emotional instability. Taking to opium, chloroform and alcohol Trakl failed his school courses and was obliged to re-take a year. Meanwhile he developed a close attachment to his sister Grete, leading some critics to speculate upon a possibly incestuous relationship. Trakl's initial attempts at poetry were uniformly unsuccessful; at this time he also wrote brief articles for a local newspaper and two one-act plays (both also unsuccessful). Dropping out of school and deciding upon a career as a pharmacist's apprentice, Trakl's choice of profession afforded him ready access to satisfy a by now confirmed drug habit. He went on to study pharmacy in Vienna although the death of his father prior to the completion of his course caused Trakl financial hardship.
