Originally the title was "Consultant in Poetry ", but that was changed in to be "Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry". The idea was modeled on the Poet Laureate of England . These poets and their terms of service are given below. According to the Library of Congress,
"The Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress serves as the nation's official lightning rod for the poetic impulse of Americans. During his or her term, the Poet Laureate seeks to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry."
The Poet Laureate is appointed annually by the Librarian of Congress and serves from October to May. In making the appointment, the Librarian consults with former appointees, the current Laureate and distinguished poetry critics. The position has existed under two separate titles: from 1937 to 1986 as "Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress" and from 1986 forward as "Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry." The name was changed by an act of Congress in 1985.

EN3246 Literature and the Other Arts 2005-06, Semester 2 Rajeev Patke [web page will be under construction until January 2006] The general approach adopted by the module treats art as a set of practices which involves the use of different media for the purposes of representation and self-expression. Within this general perspective the module offers two kinds of opportunity: a study of select examples of contemporary poets writing in English whose work is inspired by specific paintings; and an opportunity to work out a system of analysis and interpretation which can be extended to the study of the relation between poetry and painting in and across cultures. Module Aims The module has two broad aims: 1. To work out a method of analysis and interpretation that treats the relation between specific poems and paintings in terms of goals, techniques and cultural significance.
2. To extend the methods of analysis and interpretation developed on the basis of specific examples from contemporary poetry in English as a tool for comparative study in and across cultures. 25% of the time allotted for this module will be devoted to a reading of prose discussions that develop methods of analysis and interpretation suited for a comparative study of poetry and painting as sister arts; 75% of the time will be allotted to the analysis of specific poems and the paintings on which they are based. Correspondingly, the syllabus will be divided into two parts:

http://www.raintaxi.com/online/2004spring/iraqi.shtml
Home About Contact View Cart ... Online Edition: Spring 2004 Iraqi Poetry Today edited by Saadi Simawe and Daniel Weissbort Zephyr Press ($16.95) by Jeffrey C. Alfier Paul Fussell once described British soldier-poet Edmund Blunden's decision to write the autobiography of his war years as "memory conceived as an act of reconnaissance." In Iraqi Poetry Today , one finds a spirit kindred to Blunden, even though for most Iraqis, war and loss are not events solely relegated to the haunting past; instead, the events are ongoing and in most cases are inherited parts of their futures. It was thus the hope of co-editors Saadi Simawe and Daniel Weissbort that a new translation of Iraqi poetry into English would contribute to the appreciation and cause of peace in the Middle East. Though their dream has been disappointed in the current atmosphere of violence, they still find an abiding faith in the endurance of the poetry they compiled in this anthology of forty poets. Hence, theirs is a serious attempt to "save what remains of Iraqi humanity and culture in the face of a brutal dictatorship and war." Under the current turmoil of post-war Iraq Simawe and Weissbort's compilation is needed more urgently than ever. The task of translation is never easy, requiring close attention to the poetic sensibilities and literary traditions of the peoples whose literature undergoes the delicate translation route, as well as to the particular challenges of vernacular language. Simawe and Weissbort's editorial process was complicated further by near endless warfare which disrupted the process of finding sources of Iraqi poetry, especially that written since the 1980s. Yet even after the poetry was found and translated, the editors noted the scant attention paid to poetry in translation by the English-speaking academic communities. Undeterred by academia's rebuff, the volume under review here represents several major styles of Arab and Kurdish poetry, and the range of subjects is expansive.

January 2002 Class Assistance Following our most successful National Poetry Day yet, organisations from all over the UK have been contacting us to arrange poets' visits on an impressive variety of projects. This January, Parm Kaur will be working with Kurdish visual artists in primary schools in West London, as part of a project organised by the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith. David James, head of English at Dauntsey's School in Swindon, has a great track record of working with poets and this year has invited Matthew Sweeney to do a reading as part of the school's arts festival in March. And we were delighted to put City University in touch with Julie Ward - a poet who has worked extensively within the special needs sector - to help research poetry's role in education for children with Profound and Multiple Learning difficulties. These are just three examples from the many projects we have facilitated through our consultancy service, and the Poetry Society is currently seeking poets from all areas of the UK to register with us and help us carry on our excellent tradition of working in education. Whether you specialise in work with Key Stage 1 and 2, run creative writing workshops in post-16 education or work on cross-arts projects as part of longer residencies, we want to hear from you. This month, Mary DiLucia interviews Philip Levine. Poet On Poetry Menu Poem Sample Interview with Poet Download Reading Of "For Fran" By Philip Levine Philip Levine, born in Detroit, Michigan in 1928, has published more than fifteen books of poems as well as essays about poetry, teaching and life. Nowadaysafter winning a Pulitzer Prize, two National Book Awards, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and teaching at Fresno State University for many yearshe teaches in the graduate program in Creative Writing at NYU, where I am a student. A little background: when I was 16, in a small, all-girls Catholic high school in the suburbs of Philadelphia, we read this amazing poem, "For Fran." Even years afterwards, I remembered the pace of the lines, the rhymes, the weight of "something for the dark," and the bright, exotic image of "Fran" as she "ties with twine the lemon tree." So, when an elevator door opened one day on Washington Square, and there was the man who had written that poem, Phil Levine, standing there with his wife, Fran, I took it as a gift from the universeand I had questions, about this poem, about teaching, and about life. Reviewing Marie Ponsot's newest collection of poems in The New York Times Book Review To be fair, I should point out that this passage is merely the introduction to a piece in which the author goes on to praise Ponsot's work and to consider some of the downsides to completely discounting poetry. But even a poetry enthusiast like myself must admit that the reasons Orr gives for poetry's small readership seem not only familiar, but accurate. The fact that more poetry is being published now than ever before means more bad poetry is available to readers than in previous decades, and most of it probably conforms in some way to Orr's criticisms. The same can be said of any art form, however, because they all have successes and failures. Should we really swear off movies in general, for example, just because last summer's Goldmember was a disappointment?

Rhetorical overkill and collateral damage to the language of political debate. By James Bowman t's called attention to the fact that poets are against the war in a big way," says Jay Parini, an antiwar poet himself, referring to the First Lady's cancellation of a White House-sponsored poetry event scheduled for this week. There seems a general sense in which antiwar poets seem to assume their right to speak for all poets. After all, they don't know of any other poets who aren't against the war — or the projected war, we ought to say, since so far this is history's most advertised and most opposed war that has yet to take place. But this is just one measure of the insular quality of American poetry today. Our poets have grown so accustomed to doing without any audience to speak of, apart from each other, that they can scarcely conceive of anything called "poetry" of which they are not the virtual proprietors.
Of course that doesn't stop them from trying to find a loftier explanation for the opposition of "poetry" to Bush's war. Parini told Martin Arnold of the

Violet Nesdoly writes: The world of words has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. As a kid, whenever my Mom needed me for a job, it was a sure thing she'd find me between the covers of a book. First publishing credits I didn't become aware of the power of poetry until high school and Mr. Willems' English class. His carefully-prepared handouts and enthusiastic poem dissections showed us how to dig amazing amounts out of what were—on first reading—inscrutable lines. It was during those years that I earned my first publishing credits in the Western Producer, "Young Co-operator's Page." I decided that someday I would like to be a "writer." Though I wrote very little for public consumption in the years that followed—through university, teaching, miscellaneous jobs, marriage, the arrival of two children, homemaking and running my home-based medical transcription business—I continued to write privately, journal upon journal. It was my way of processing life and bookmarking God's dealings with me. My saying: "If I can write, I can be sane." Writing for children In 1995, one year from a landmark birthday, I realized that unless I put some muscle into developing writing skills, my childhood fantasy of becoming a published writer would remain just that. By year-end I had enrolled in a correspondence course on writing for children, and in March 1997 I sold my first children's story.

In your poetry section, create a special display that features books by several winners of a particular award, such as the Pulitzer Prize or National Book Award. Keep abreast of the current winners. Experiment with different awards. Try a display based on the nominees for a particular award. Create and post a flier that lists winners from a number of years.

Create handwritten shelf-talkers (a small card taped to the shelf, maybe including a short excerpt from, or write-up on, the book) based on staff or customer recommendations in your poetry section. Or place these cards directly in books, and face the books out. Maybe even make a special endcap display based on favorite poetry selections by employees or customers.
