Poetic works and poems can often be read out loud. Poetry uses language-based imagination and creativity; the literary genre often uses imagery, metaphors and a specific choice of words. Poems are often presented as a collection (series of poems written by a specific poet) or as an anthology (selection of poems written by several poets on a specific theme or presented in chronological order).

In this online tool, elementary students can write poems about different shapes. Elements of the writing process are also included.
A shape poem is a poem that describes an object and is written in the shape of the object.
In this online tool, elementary students can choose a shape (e.g., an apple or a balloon) and write poems about the shape. By selecting a shape, students are learning how to focus their writing on a particular topic.
In addition, as part of the online tool, students are prompted to brainstorm, write, and revise their poems, thus reinforcing elements of the writing process.
Students can also print their finished shape poems, cut and color them, and display them in the classroom or at home. Diamante Poems : Online Interactive Tool

Reading poetry bonds the two or more of youto each other and to language itself. Poetry, the mother lode of language, needs to be spoken aloud, as it was written with an ear to the music. Just as classical music is said to help with learning, the cadences and depth of poetry surely attune the heart to a range of emotions, develop a sense of humor, and slip in a desire to read along the way. When a child lights up at the mention of poetry, it is always a sign of life, and there is hope for my world.

    Homeschooling Unit Studies Made Easy
May 2005 On any given day we are almost unaware that we are learning a number of different subjects. For example, when we go shopping we are utilizing nutrition, math, economics, and communication skills, yet the process flows under the shopping concept. Unit studies are based on this idea. They incorporate a number of different subjects at the same time and provide an overarching concept to tie the information together. This approach mimics “real life” learning. The unit studies approach is designed to give both broad and in-depth understandings of subjects. It is believed that when children go into such depth, and spend a generous amount of time on each theme; their retention of the subject is higher than in traditional methods. Most unit studies include experiential, hands-on learning along with the inclusion of subjects such as science, math, geography, art, music, history, language, literature, drama, and creative movement. Since the central focus is on one theme, all core subjects are integrated together based on that particular theme. In addition to the deeper learning, unit studies can be tailored so that children of all ages and different levels can learn together and be given ample time to think, experiment and discover each topic for themselves.

Some Thoughts On Writing Children's Verse
by Richard Stevenson First of all, let me make some distinctions. I've used the term verse rather than the more all-inclusive term poetry because most of the pieces I'm represented by here* are written in or derive from obsessive verse forms; that is to say, they are written in accentual-syllabic metre (i.e. the unit of measure is the foot or some combination of unstressed and stressed syllable(s) arranged in lines of so many syllables, so many beats per line), but they don't make use of a lot of figurative expression. Think confection rather than full meal deal: poetry makes use of language in a fundamentally different way than prose, is not just more rhythmic or "prettier"; it uses metaphor and symbolism to create a less linear, more multi-valent type of expression. Having said that, the bulk of these observations would apply to children's poetry too (and certainly syllabic forms like the one I used for "The Buru"), whether the poetry be written in free verse (no regular metre) or in regular metre.

Say, "I like watermelon, it tastes wonderful." aloud. Try clapping your hands when you say it. Then try clapping your hands in the same rhythm without saying the words. You can hear the rhythm of the phrase. The natural rhythms of speech are very important in poetry.
Poetry, like all literature, makes use of language. Poetry is a type of rhythmic writing. In poetry, the arrangement and sound of the words as well as the words themselves express emotion and meaning. Poets make patterns of sound and rhythm. These patterns often come from different types of repetition.
"Belinda lived in a little white house,
With a little black kitten and a little gray mouse,
And a little yellow dog and a little red wagon,
And a realio, trulio, little pet dragon."
This is the first stanza of "The Tale of Custard the Dragon" by Ogden Nash. Read this poem aloud. It has a strong rhythm. The poet has used several different kinds of repetition in this poem. Most poems make use of repeating sounds to help establish a pattern. Rhyme is an example of a pattern repeating sounds. In many poems, the last word in a line rhymes with the last word in another line.
Poetry also creates pictures in our minds. Poets help us look at familiar things in new ways.

The focal point of the school, organizationally and mood-wise, is the
principal. School principals, I find, may be helpful or not particularly, or may
delegate helpfulness, but seldom trouble the poetry program as long as
one is on time and seems confident. There's little, however, the
visiting poet can do about the mood of the whole school. One operates
class by class, where the teachers are supremely important. The teacher
is the bellwether of the class, of its developed attention. When the
teacher writes along with the student, or simply listens alertly, this
    participation catalyzes the whole room.
On a more practical note, the teacher can exert authority, which the visiting poet doesn't have, when it's needed for the proper degree of order. For me, quietness is important when poems are being read aloud, and it's an eternal little battle to bring classes "down" after the hurly-burly of creation. Essentials are learned in each state

This unit involves minimal technology requirements but extends across a wide range of poetry. Of the eighteen poets included; eight are women, six are African-American; two are nineteenth-century poets and the three lesson plans are thematically broken into "What is Poetry?", "Poems of Childhood," and "Self and Society." Each of the three lesson plans includes a short reading list, a brief introduction setting tone and theme, a series of analytical questions, two creative activities, and at least one writing assignment. As Anthony notes in his Teaching Guide, the lessons can be presented in many different ways and are hence applicable to a wide variety of classrooms and students. Quick Links Learning Objectives
