Scots by birth, Alan Milne spent his childhood in London, where his father was a preparatory schoolmaster. His early education owed much to the skills of a young teacher and mentor H.G. Wells years later, Milne described Wells as "a great writer and a great friend." He continued his education at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He bequethed his original handwritten manuscripts of Winnie-the-Pooh and The House At Pooh Corner to the College Library. While an undergraduate at Cambridge he edited Granta for a year his first literary efforts were published in the humourous magazine Punch, where a month after his twenty-fourth birthday he started work as Assistant Editor, remaining there until the outbreak of the First World War. In 1913, Milne married Dorothy Daphne de Selincourt and they had one son, Christopher. Although a noted pacifist, Milne enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and served in France. His famous denunciation of war entitled

When reading a work of fiction or autobiography, one should learn something about the book's author and the historical and social context of the author's life. To find biographical and critical information about your author, try the following sources: Reference Books: Poetry for Students (R 809.1 P) is a five volume series that profiles many different poets, specific poems, themes, style, criticism and basic facts about the poet's life. The following working groups sponsored by the Whitney Humanities Center will be meeting in 2005-2006. Senior and junior faculty members as well as graduate students are welcome to participate in any of the working groups, which usually meet once or twice a month (click on a specific group from the list for details).
Anyone interested in creating a new working group in 2006-07 should send Catherine Labio a brief description of their proposed activities by April 30, 2006.
Aesthetics, Ethics, and Economics
This working group is designed to foster interdisciplinary exchange through the discussion of nineteenth-century European texts and images in which aesthetic, economic, and moral notions such as value or interest intersect. Faculty members and graduate students in philosophy, literature, art history, economics, political science, religious studies, history, and any other relevant field are welcome. Meets once a month.
