The California Board of Podiatric Medicine has authorized diplomates of the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry to advertise their certification from the Board in the State of California. The Board also has been approved by the Veterans Administration, enabling eligible podiatrists to be reimbursed by the VA for their examination fees. The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry is the only podiatric certification program accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), a national accreditation body for certification programs, and the Board is in the process of exploring accreditation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the ISO International Standards for Accreditation for Bodies Operating Certification of Persons.

Clinical Department Head: Arthur Widtfeldt, DPM The Podiatric Medicine Department motto might well be "You never walk alone," as podiatrists here have treated foot and ankle disorders for 33 years. Department priorities are to standardize procedures and cross-train staff, which allows us to maximize our ability to treat our patients as well as maximize time for doctor/patient encounters in the most efficient way. A 'team-type' approach brings the doctor and patient together more quickly. Podiatry, like other PAMF departments, employs the latest minimally invasive therapies to lessen patient discomfort and recuperative downtime. One example is the treatment of neuroma, a non-malignant, tumor-like growth on the ball of the foot. It can be a very painful and disabling problem. Now, a system of weekly injections causes the tumor to essentially shrivel up. Another non-invasive innovation is the use of an Ossatron machine to treat plantar fasciitis, heel spurs and inflammation of the heel. The machine provides shock-wave therapy to the affected area, thus helping to reduce inflammation.

Significant Points
  • Demand for podiatric care is expected to increase; however, only a limited number of job openings for podiatrists is expected because the occupation is small and most podiatrists remain in it until they retire.
  • Podiatrists need a State license that requires the completion of at least 90 hours of undergraduate study, the completion of a 4-year program at a college of podiatric medicine, and in most States, a postdoctoral residency program of at least 1 year.
  • Many podiatrists are solo practitioners, although more are entering partnerships with other podiatrists or other health practitioners; establishing a new practice will be most difficult in the areas surrounding colleges of podiatric medicine.
  • Podiatrists enjoy very high earnings.
