Exercise may be OK for patients with foot osteoarthritis
New research suggests that exercise is not harmful to patients with foot osteoarthritis; however, a dearth of research on the topic leaves podiatrists to rely on a few studies and patient feedback when treating this condition. Foot OA associated with other joint problems More data from the Clearwater Osteoarthritis Study shows that individuals with foot osteoarthritis are likely to develop or have osteoarthritis at the knee and in hand joints. These co-morbidity data may assist podiatrists as they advise patients with foot OA. Texas court rules podiatry scope of practice includes ankle Texas podiatrists survived yet another challenge to their scope of practice when Travis County District Court Judge Darlene Byrne agreed with the Texas State Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners that the “foot” includes the ankle. Custom newsletters offer multiple benefits A custom practice newsletter is painless way for podiatrists to educate patients and market their practice at the same time.

What is a Podiatrist?
A podiatrist, DPM, doctor of podiatric medicine, is the only health care professional whose total training focuses on the foot, ankle and related body systems. Advice on Finding The Right Doctor Locating a doctor that you can feel comfortable with and can communicate openly with at times may seem challenging. A good source of referral for a doctor would be to ask a doctor whom you trust. The Use of Orthotics in the Treatment of Lower Extremity Disorders Many foot pathologies arise from the abnormal movements of the complex joint structures within the foot. These abnormalities can also cause related knee, hip and back problems.

Videos FOR DOCTORS ONLY Website Services Get Listed in DPMLocator ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Testimonials Link to podiatrychannel Overview Gout is a systemic disease (i.e., condition that occurs throughout the body) caused by the buildup of uric acid in the joints. An elevated blood level of uric acid (called hyperuricemia ) occurs when the liver produces more uric acid than the body can excrete in the urine, or when a diet high in rich foods (e.g., red meat, cream sauces, red wine) produces more uric acid than the kidneys can filter from the blood. Over time, uric acid in the blood crystallizes and settles in the joint spaces, causing swelling, inflammation, stiffness, and pain. Gout usually affects the first metatarsal phalangeal joint of the big toe (hallux) or the ankle joints. Incidence and Prevalence According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), gout affects approximately 2.1 million people in the United States and is more common in men between the ages of 40 and 50. In women, incidence increases after menopause. The condition is rare in children and young adults.
