Yeltsin in hospital, doctors suspect pneumonia
November 30, 1999
Web posted at: 3:13 a.m. EST (0813 GMT) MOSCOW (Reuters) The Kremlin declined to comment on President Boris Yeltsin's health early on Tuesday but NTV television said doctors were likely to gather shortly to decide whether he had pneumonia. Yeltsin was taken to hospital on Monday after doctors detected signs he might be developing pneumonia. His spokesman said he would stay in hospital for about a week. Last week a viral infection and bronchitis forced him to postpone the signing of a landmark union treaty with ex-Soviet neighbour Belarus. A Kremlin spokeswoman, contacted by telephone, said at this stage there was no new information about Yeltsin's condition.

Czech president stable, but pneumonia, irregular heart rate persist
Havel has suffered repeated health scares since a 1996 lung cancer operation
August 5, 1998
Web posted at: 7:31 a.m. EDT (1131 GMT) PRAGUE, Czech Republic (CNN) Czech President Vaclav Havel was in stable condition Wednesday, but doctors continued to worry about lingering pneumonia and an irregular heart rate. Havel's heart rate soared to 200 beats per minute Tuesday and he fell into critical condition for two hours because of blood poisoning caused by pneumonia. Doctors stabilized his condition with electric shocks. "Pneumonia has not yet been suppressed," Havel's doctor, Iljac Kotik, told the CTK news agency Wednesday, adding that the president's temperature lingered at about 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). "Irregularities of the heart rhythm appear every now and then but they are not dramatic and are caused by pneumonia," Kotik said.

trimetrexate (Neutrexin) Drug description
Trimetrexate has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of moderate-to-severe PCP pneumonia in people with compromised immune systems. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, commonly referred to as PCP, can affect the lungs as well as other parts of the body, including the skin and internal organs. People who are at the greatest risk of contracting this type of pneumonia are those who have less than 200 T4 cells. Symptoms of PCP include shortness of breath, dry cough, and fever. Trimetrexate is an alternative for people that can't take other approved treatments like TMP/SMX . It can also be used if the PCP pneumonia doesn't get better with the standard treatments. Due to very serious and potentially life-threatening side-effects of this drug, leucovorin must be co-administered for at least 72 hours after the last dose. Side effects
Dosage
Trimetrexate is usually given at a dose of 45 mg/m2 once daily by intravenous infusion over 60-90 minutes. Leucovorin must be given daily during trimetrexate treatment and for 72 hours afterward. Leucovorin may be given intravenously at a dose of 20 mg/m2 over 5-10 minutes every 6 hours or orally as 4 doses of 20 mg/m2 spaced evenly throughout the day. How long it may take to work
The recommended course of therapy is 21 days of trimetrexate and 24 days of leucovorin.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Pneumonia more serious in older patients
98-year old comedian Bob Hope is responding well to treatment for pneumonia and could be released from the hospital "in a few days," his doctor said Wednesday. CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta joined Leon Harris to discuss the impact of Hope's age on his illness. LEON HARRIS: All right, let's get right to it. How does age factor into this? DR. SANJAY GUPTA: Right. Exactly, it's to say what might be a mild infection in you or me, Leon, could be a very serious infection in someone like Bob Hope. The specifics are that when you get older a few changes take place in your body. One is that it's harder for you to fight infections. Your immune systems don't work as well. Your heart may not work as well, and as you know, your heart pumps blood from your lungs to the rest of your body. So, fluid might actually build up in your lungs. That can be a place where infection can start. MORE STORIES Bob Hope hospitalized for pneumonia Finally, you may not cough as well. You don't have enough strength in your upper chest and stuff like that. I always tell my parents, in addition to working out the lower body, make sure to work out the upper body as well so you don't run into that problem.

Mycoplasma pneumonia often affects younger people and may be associated with symptoms outside of the lungs (such as anemia and rashes), and neurological syndromes (such as meningitis, myelitis, and encephalitis).
