22 gigs in 28 minutes. Beats me how that racks up, but I'm pleased. Post Digitizing a music collection: the dull details So, anyone ever digitize a music collection before? I've been hired to do it, and by gum, I mean to do it right. However, I'm floundering in file formats and bit rates and external hard drives.
Alright, I figure I can't die too hard with an external hard drive... I mean, how badly can I screw that one up? The only factors are size and ports (Excuse my lingo... I mean whether the drive connects using USB 2.0 or Firewire, or other ports I don't particularly give a damn about). I figure I better get one with a USB port, so he can plug it into virtually any computer... Firewire, if I have it on my computer (still have to look that up), might help making the ripping process faster, but I can't count on John's computers to have the equipment to handle it. I can't imagine I'd get screwed over with a USB 2.0 port, compatibility-wise.
Compatibility-that's what I'm worrying about with file format. I mean, yeah, I get it-mp3 is the standard. But wouldn't it be nice to be able to store it in smaller file sizes? He's not interested in sending it to people-only listening to his collection himself. So why not do AAC (which I still think is the same thing as M4A, which might be an issue knowledge-wise), or OGG? I don't know if my worrying about whether AAC/OGG would be supported by any mp3 player, or any computer software, he wants to buy is worth the file size difference. If I go with mp3, I'm going with 192 kbps at the very least, hands down. He wants to be able to play it on whatever system he damn well may ever feel like; so 192 it is (if not more, which I'm trying to figure out). Then there's VBR as an option, which I don't really understand... from what I've read, I've been told to use it.

Living With Platypi
The Perfect, Yet Oblivious World
If someone were to drive down any commonly used road, the speed limit would most likely read 60 MPH, or 10 miles a minute. This speed limit can be directly tied into the speed at which the world is traveling. But as the person moves from a road to a highway, the speed limit increases to 70 MPH, which is exactly what todays world is doing. The world is growing at an ever-quickening pace and in order for people to keep up with the world; they need to increase the speed at which they function. The blinding speed at which the world is moving is impairing the vision of many people, and will eventually lead to the collapse, or break-down of their world.
A perfect example of how quickly the world is moving is depicted in the picture I chose to talk about. Even though this illustration does not physically show a large amount of detail, the underlying meaning, or meanings, is exceedingly detailed. This picture speaks out with tremendous force on the obliviousness of our society, as well as the world in whole. To narrow the meaning of this picture on just a few aspects would be degrading the numerous implications that were intended for the picture.
But to say that the car is the best invention ever created would also be a lie. If environmental hazards were taken into consideration, then the car is a major cause to many of the environmental problems. The rate of fossil fuel consumption is growing, and in return, the amount of natural resources the Earth possesses is depleting. In order for more natural resources to be found, companies must destroy land; in effect, making way for the modern world. Also, as many people know, the exhaust from a car causes damage to the ozone layer that surrounds the earth and keeps harmful ultraviolet rays from entering our atmosphere and causing a plethora of problems. It is true that hybrid and electrical cars are being made, but those are presently too expensive to maintain, so people do not bother with them. Cars are a harmful luxurious item that many people take for granted, and therefore do not realize the damage it causes to the world we live in.

Up to the Minute
When I open up my Yahoo eMailbox, there's a list of "breaking news". It's been the same list for the past eight days now, with the lead story being about Ophelia lashing the North Carolina coast, as if I remotely gave a fuck.
Meanwhile, I have a second Yahoo account and when I open up that one it always offers stories about celebrities and entertainment. While Yahoo doesn't see fit to update the national or world news more often than once biweekly, the entertainment news links are updated several times a day. There's no excuse for not knowing all about Kate Moss' problems in this world, but I'll forgive you if you hadn't heard there's a new tropical storm threatening the gulf states.

My Holiday in Hell
It's Memorial Day, the day we stay we stay home and honor I forget what. That is, it's a holiday for most people except for me. While my neighbors were dragging home barbeque supplies, I was heading off for another day at work. Just another day.
Downstairs right now the gunshot victims have arrived and been dragged out of the backs of police cruisers. Next stop, surgery. That's what's happening now, but it's been a peaceful day. The real work will be done tomorrow when the citizens with voluntary complaints come in. Nobody comes to the ER on a weekend or holiday if they don't have to. All the bullshit will show up tomorrow and we'll be swamped.
But it's not tomorrow, it's today, and I'm assigned to work the observation unit. It's the easiest shift on the slowest day of the season. All is well as I take report on two or three patients and then immediately discharge one of them and discharge another one for a coworker. Smooth sailing. It will undoubtedly get busier but it's a good start. Besides, I'd always prefer to get a bunch of fresh patients than to pick up a batch from somebody else at shift change. It's just much easier to follow the plan of care if I start off new with one.

Platypi pack a nasty punch
By Damon Shorter Despite its cute and cuddly public image, an angry platypus can do a lot of damage. The males have a single spur on each hind leg carrying a venom that causes swelling, redness and excruciating pain in anyone unlucky enough to be jabbed, and the side-affects of a spurring can last for up to three months. Now, an ANU PhD student studying the venom has shown it contains a specific pain-causing ingredient that directly stimulates the nerve cells that register pain. Greg de Plater, from the John Curtin School of Medical Research, says the discovery helps explain the ruthless effectiveness of the venom and may eventually lead to new treatments for chronic pain sufferers. "This venom is a highly refined chemical cocktail whose single purpose, it seems, is to cause pain," Mr de Plater explained. Digestive enzymes in the venom (peptidases and hyaluronidases) dissolve connective tissues joining cells together, other proteins dilate blood vessels, helping the poison to spread and stimulate histamine release and inflammation. The slight natural acidity of the venom adds further sting. However the new protein isolated by Mr de Plater (he is coy about its exact identity until the work is published) works by directly stimulating nociceptors, the nerve cells that register pain.
