Plastic Canvas Christmas Tree Ornaments
Attach two squares together to make these pretty ornaments for the Christmas Tree. These are fun first stitching projects for grade school children. The fact that you attach two squares together back to back to make the ornament means that the young stitchers don't have to worry about keeping the knots and thread ends at the back of the project neat.
front
back
Materials:
Plastic canvas cut into a 20x20 grid square Needle large enough to hold wool wool in colors indicated on the patterns Scissors
Directions:
Cut your plastic canvas so there are 20 squares across and 20 down (I always pre-cut the 20x20 grid, but you can trim it at the end if you're not in the mood to count out the squares)
Print out the template of choice there is a picture and word template for each ornament. Some people find the pictures easier to follow and some the words if you aren't sure which you prefer, print them both out
Stitch the ornament according to the pattern: feel free to substitute colors according to what you have on hand and what you think looks pretty the back will not be visible, so tie off your wool in the back without worrying about the mess.

recalls community shop Plastic Canvas Art By Linda Arrington Older children and adults will enjoy making plastic canvas art! "I go to Wal-Mart and buy a book on any design for plastic canvas," says Linda. Then, she buys a sheet of canvas, a skein of thread to match and canvas needles. "And the rest is history. I have made some beautiful things just using plastic canvas," she says. "If I can, anyone can." But don't let your creations be limited to what you find in a book. Let your child pick simple shapes out of coloring books and try to recreate it on the canvas. Or, have them draw their own creations on notebook paper, then transfer to the canvas. Another idea is to let them pencil in their name on clear canvas and simply fill in with thread. The possibilities are endless! http://iparenting.com

Small Treasures Box
by Sandra Resnick

One way to test whether a project is a good one to use for teaching kids is to use the oooh factor. When I went around the elementary school where we were going to teach an after school needlecraft class to drum up students, I showed them some of the projects we could be working on. This particular project not only prompted entire classrooms to erupt in oohs but it actually was responsible for motivating kids to sign up.
Another way to test whether a project is a good one to use for teaching kids is to see how many of the kids actually finish the project. Not only did almost every kid finish this project but some kids made two and a couple kids made three boxes.
Volunteers from the St. Paul Needleworkers chapter of the Embroiderer's Guild of America and the Needleworker Guild of Minnesota helped me teach classes after school last year at both a Minneapolis public elementary and middle school. We had a lot of fun and we learned a lot about coming absolutely prepared since we had about 45 minutes of classroom time to work with. We also discovered that one stitching adult for every 4 stitching kids was a good ratio. Many thanks to all the people who donated their time and materials to this effort with special thanks to fellow teachers, Pat Philip and Linda Wyszynkski.
This box is one of the projects we designed for these classes. Since members from both guilds and various vendors including the Caron Company donated materials, we found ourselves designing by donation. That is, we had to come up with designs that used what was donated. We had enough Caron Watercolors thread and plastic canvas to make these boxes and they were a big success.

Cut 12 strips of each color of plastic canvas, 4 holes wide by the length Spread the strips of plastic canvas apart. Hang whirler outside and watch it
http://www.crafts4kids.com/projects/plasticwhirl.htm
by Lynda Musante
See the effects of the wind when you hang this whirler outside on a breezy day. Watch it whirl and spin as the air catches its colorful sails!
You will need:
  • Four 14" Long sheets of plastic canvas (pink, blue, yellow and green.)
  • 12" x 1/4" Wood dowel
  • White plastic canvas yarn
  • White acrylic paint
  • Scissors
  • Tacky glue
  • Craft snips
  • Paintbrush
  • 2 Large hole wood beads (to fit on dowel)
Instructions:
  • Paint dowel and wood beads white. Allow to dry. Glue a bead to one end. Cut 12 strips of each color of plastic canvas, 4 holes wide by the length of the sheet. Insert tip of scissor into the plastic canvas strip one hole down from each end and cut out a small square, 2 holes by 2 holes. The hole should be large enough for the dowel to slide through. Slide each of the strips onto the dowel in the following order: 4 pink, 4 yellow, 4 green and 4 blue. Continue this pattern until all of the strips are on the dowel. Grasp the opposite end of the first strip you slid onto the dowel and slide it onto the bottom of the dowel forming a loop. Continue in order with each strip. This forms the whirler's shape.
